I have seen DE many times over the years and love reading about other people's memories and wonder if they saw the same gigs as me. Did anyone catch Rockpile at Canvey Island gig circa 1978 with Feelgoods, Eddie and The Hot Rods and Lew Lewis? It was fantastic but we had hitched from Birmingham and got soaked on the way. We were going to sleep in a bus shelter but were so wet we spent all our beer money on a B&B to get dry. The Limboheads.
I caught Rockpile 3 times in the 80's. What a fun band to catch live! Edmunds, Lowe, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams (of Dire Straits fame) really knew how to ROCK IT. This song is vintage Rockpile at their best.
Everybody copied Chuck Berry. The early Beach Boys stole some of his riffs note for note and he sued them for it. Keith Richards always uses Chuck Berry riffs. I think the most covered Rock song of all time is "Johnny B. Goode."
I saw Rockpile live at Harpos in Detroit when they toured the USA back then. I would love to see any video or photos from that concert, but so far none have surfaced. Anyone...?
Man... when Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds get together.... you KNOW you're gonna ROCK!! And Dave Edmunds pretty much single handedly introduced the world to the amazing Albert Lee!!! Great post martyvalentine!!!~KK
I remember seeing these guys in the 80s ar the Pallidium in NYC, where they opened for Van Morrison. They blew the freakin roof off the stage, and when Van came on starting his set with "Moondance", the whole place exploded with screams of "ROCKPILE!!!!!"
@alan4sure Man, you nailed it on this one. Today's slick, overproduced pop bands can't hold a candle to this material. Edmunds is a true devotee of music when it mattered, ala the fifties and sixties, and his "Sweet Little Lisa" feat. Albert Lee is truly remarkable stuff.
Brilliant - even better than the studio version! Coolest guys ever. Pity about the lengthy kaleidoscope effects. I mean, I love a kaleidoscope as much as the next man, but please - too much of the thing!
I agree with all the accolades. This is a sparkling performance of a song that I've heard 1000 times.
Just want to point out that Rockpile wouldn't be Rockpile without Billy Bremner. His dancing rythem lines and alternate leads added so much to this bands sound!
Yes indeed. Bremmer was essential. A really overlooked, wonderful player. I can't think of anyone who could have filled his shoes, except perhaps A.Lee.
It was quite common in the sixties and seventies for artists to write virtual rewrites of Chuck Berry songs as a tribute-Jumping Jack Flash,Get Out Of Denver,Come Together,Surfin USA.This is just one in a proud tradition.
Leoseries was remarking on the similarities between the Chuck Berry track called You Never Can Tell and Nick Lowes song I Knew The Bride. Both have a wedding theme and the tunes are structured in a similar manner.
Rockpile at LA Forum, 1977. They opened for Bad Company. I hated arena rock, but was looking forward to seeing Dave Edmunds in concert.
Rockpile tore it up onstage. Kids were dancing in the aisles, jumping on their seats. It was wild. I cheered, "It's OVER" - and it was!
Bad Company was boring by comparison - and their fans knew it. Rockpile blew them off the stage. So, Bad Company kicked them off the tour. It didn't matter. The handwriting was on the wall.
@TubeNumber1 I remember reading about this little episode. Just how big could Rockpile have been had they really worked across The States? I recall Nick Lowe saying that it looked too much like hard work. Thus, the many other British acts these days that can't be bothered to really build a live reputation in the US. Blur, Paul Weller, Robbie Williams, Primal Scream et all. Oh dear.
Blimey Anna, you are so right, iam normally quite good at noticing similar looking people, dont know how that one got past me. I envy you. Well spotted.

Nick Lowe wrote it, in tribute to the great Chuck--and in priase of Dave, it is on of the few songs so written that is really in a league with Berry.
Is this praise? There is no higher!
