"sang impur"? What does "impure blood" mean? That you can't be ethnically mixed to be free? Or that you can't be ethnically mixed to be French? Or that having "politically incorrect" beliefs gives you the wrong chromosomes? Or that you'll automatically have the "correct" beliefs if you have the "right" ancestors?
@Netherlandsization Why was his blood impure? Were his parents the "wrong" ethnic groups? Was that one of the reasons the French tolerated Louis XIV who killed thousands more of them and spent more of their money and was a religious bigot-but he had "pure blood"?
@NixonisLord No, Louis VXI was simply the victim of awful PR and a surprisingly efficient and effective propaganda machine. Sang impur refers more to the counter-revolutionaries. They were insulted as unpatriotic. Not really French. Impure blood.
Considering how old the song is I'm not surprised that it's a little offensive. I think it does a good job of expressing revolutionary sentiment. The good and the bad. The French Revolution was a terrifying time in history.
The best prank in the world would be to take over the loudspeakers in GITMO and play this resistance song for all the formerly armed rebels against imperialism. Fidel Castro should totally do that shit before he dies.
When I was in high school choir, our director would harp on us to "open your mouths wide!" so that we could articulate and produce clear notes instead of mush. If we had YouTube back in 1977, we could have seen this and thought, "Oh, *that's* what she means."
All you french-bashing mofos suck a nut (if you can fit it in your mouth). You are the ones who don't have any guts. France banned the Burka! You're already licking muslim ass with multiculturalism, no need for what I just mentioned. You are the fags! France defends its culture, and that's one reason Americans and British hate them so much - The temerity to like one's self. If you have a problem with it, stop drinking the best wine and brandy in the world...
Studying genealogy, I was actually surprised (and many don't know) how many Americans with old colonial roots (New England, also mid Atlantic) have at least some French ancestry. And that's not even counting Louisiana (and thru that Texas).
The ragging on the French is so remarkably stupid on so many levels. The French were RIGHT about Iraq, have better health care, better vacation policy, smarter view toward the modern world.
But in any case, this is a great song by a great people.,
Oldgreg, thanks, I'm not even French (my people came from England--cheerio old chap) but it diminshes all of us when some Americans disparage the French, who practically invented the concept of liberty. Wish I could see Paris someday. Take care, and vive le France!
Jesus Freak, you need an education on the Fighting French who helped the Allies take back their country from the Nazis in August 1944. Not just French soldiers, but citizens, even young girls, gave their lives in battles in the streets of Paris that summer, battling tanks, helping the Allies, without regard to their safety. Don't be an American Idiot--you give the rest of us (not to mention Jesus) a bad name.
Wow! I love how she stands there so still while belting out this soaring call to arms in her incredible voice. She's as beautiful as the song, it seems as though she's at attention, deliberately stilling any gestures except an occasional shake of those jet black bangs to accentuate the thrilling surges. Only a subdued nod at the conclusion rather than a big bow, as though to say, "No histrionics, this is too important, it's more than a song, it's the Marseillaise." Vive le France!
@JesusFreakDK MMM the French lost 1.2million in world war 2 the US and England combined lost a little over 900thousand and to think the French were only fighting with army for 6 weeks, they seem brave to me!!!!!!!!!

One of the most stirring national anthems in the world - and even more so when sung by cette chanteuse extraordinaire.
This is the french anthem in its best form, the best artist ever from France and this beautiful anthem. I thik, this is the best national anthem in Europa, although I am German
The best rendition me thinks. She's just awesome, and the best part is that after all these years, her voice remains the same! Very very very few artistes have that talent, normally their voice succumbs with age.
I love this version. As much as the version from the movie "Casablanca".
It's a beautiful song - right up there with "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Mazurek Dabrowskeigo" (the Polish anthem, another glorious revolutionary rabble rouser).
Every time I watch her sing this, I see Ste Jeanne d'Arc. OK, I know Mimi is much older, but the attitude, the shake of the head has got to be notre Ste Jeanne!

@Labienus : Mireille has been rolling those R's for the last 60 years. I have been informed (I think reliably), that this is peculiar to the region (in Avignon) from whence Mireille originates. Either way both Mireille and Edith sound good to me.
@beaubarri That's all fine-but Piaf wasn't from that region? -and well, Piaf is Piaf I thought MM was terrific here,r's and all- but the r's sound like an Italian tenor singing Carmen (ortrying to)
Listen, e.g. to the several version of R. Alagna beautiful French lots of emotion but proper French r's great sound on their own
I am from the UK but this is such an inspiring anthem without a rival. Its message resonates today, especially considering these hard times in both our respective nations.
Long live UK too and thanks to Churchill ;)
@Bullet1967 I mean England specifically, and I beg your pardon, but Flower of Scotland ain't as near as famous as La Marseillaise. Consider I'm a patriotist, mate.
Liberte, egalite, faternite. Liberty, equality, fraternity (brotherhood)- thank god, we had the french revolution, the constituton of my country is inspired by France. Democracy is the most important value of the West, may it last.
sharia is the law of muslims for muslims only. How could it be implemented in Europe? Beside most muslims in Europe, including the balkan native muslims, aren't exactly the most pious people most don't even go to the mosque
this song was inventended by french soldiers (from Marseille hence the name) in a time in wich the new France had to defend itself. They were fighting for freedom and equality so of course it's very nationalistic and violent, being under attack from Germans, french nobles and English how could it be different? French revolution 1789 the greatest event in western history.
@glamedrehl whats about 1945 and 1989...i think this are greeat events in western histroy too...i don´t think the french revolution is more important..and the revolution failt, right
now you're wron g it didn't fail louis the 16th was the last absolute monarch in France. It opend the eyes of suppressed people everywere in europe from Dublin to st-petersburg. It still inspires revolutions and it's principles are still worth more then any wealth in the world. sure 1945 and 1989, but they didn't change the world in the same way the french revolution did.
@glamedrehl lol the end of the second world war and the cold war did´nt change the world like the frenc revolution did?!...lol i really don´t think so!
I mean that we didn't learn that much after world war 2, there are still extreme right movements who consider certain minorities in their countries as inferiour( look at muslims in Europe) even worse people who openley love the 3 reich. If hundreds of millions aren't enough to make people reconsider to be extreme right then what will??? perhaps 1989 is an equally important event on the short run, but many russians are wondering if the sovjet union wasn't better for them, it wasn't an eyeopener
@Kickeggs what?? I kinda tried to read what that stand at last that "Grüße aus Deutschland an unsere Französischen Nachbarn!" part and if u Deutch people are saying your Language is better then you are lieing!!! French is so much better then deutch, in fact deutch sowns like Trolls trampling around screaming "Uga buga!!"

Long live UK too and thanks to Churchill ;)

Bullet1967 1 year ago
@Bullet1967 I mean England specifically, and I beg your pardon, but Flower of Scotland ain't as near as famous as La Marseillaise. Consider I'm a patriotist, mate.

sharia is the law of muslims for muslims only. How could it be implemented in Europe? Beside most muslims in Europe, including the balkan native muslims, aren't exactly the most pious people most don't even go to the mosque

i really like the french anthem...but only because of the melody...the lyricy are so nationalistic and cruel!!
hbsler 1 year ago
this song was inventended by french soldiers (from Marseille hence the name) in a time in wich the new France had to defend itself. They were fighting for freedom and equality so of course it's very nationalistic and violent, being under attack from Germans, french nobles and English how could it be different? French revolution 1789 the greatest event in western history.
glamedrehl 1 year ago
@glamedrehl whats about 1945 and 1989...i think this are greeat events in western histroy too...i don´t think the french revolution is more important..and the revolution failt, right
hbsler 1 year ago
now you're wron g it didn't fail louis the 16th was the last absolute monarch in France. It opend the eyes of suppressed people everywere in europe from Dublin to st-petersburg. It still inspires revolutions and it's principles are still worth more then any wealth in the world. sure 1945 and 1989, but they didn't change the world in the same way the french revolution did.
glamedrehl 1 year ago
@glamedrehl lol the end of the second world war and the cold war did´nt change the world like the frenc revolution did?!...lol i really don´t think so!
hbsler 1 year ago
I mean that we didn't learn that much after world war 2, there are still extreme right movements who consider certain minorities in their countries as inferiour( look at muslims in Europe) even worse people who openley love the 3 reich. If hundreds of millions aren't enough to make people reconsider to be extreme right then what will??? perhaps 1989 is an equally important event on the short run, but many russians are wondering if the sovjet union wasn't better for them, it wasn't an eyeopener

First heard this at the 68 winter olympics. The French sing it with such feeling. I love it!
