There is an extraordinary film of Fidelio with Greindl and Neidlinger. Their acting is so powerful; you can imagine what they must have been like in the Ring.

Yes, its a great joy watching that Fidelio-production from Berlin 1970 with such gorgeous singers-actors as Gwyneth Jones, James King, Gustav Neidlinger, Josef Greindl, Martti Talvela.. A unique portraying of Niedlinger-Pizarro, for instance. And Josef Greindl never disappointed me.. Do you know that he was a masterly singer of Lied? I wish everybody listened to him in Carl Loewe Balladen.

Yes, the Fidelio is outstanding. There is another almost in the same league with Anja Silja - have you seen it? But of course Greindl and Neidlinger are in a class by themselves.

I have just been wondering about Greindl as a Lieder singer - haven't heard him, but imagine he would be, as you say, masterful.

Silja is so earnest in Fidelio, a true Fidelio.

It's a stunning moment when she whips her cap off, and that long red hair comes tumbling out...... can't imagine a more effective Fidelio.

Do you have any good clips of Gerd Nienstedt in your private collection?

I have not, but there re some TV with Nienstedt - Die Piraten (1968) (also with Martha Mödl), Lulu (1979)
