so many people are probably so confused they heard something about north of the wall and then something about scotland. suprising how few have ever even heard of Hadrians wall. most right away the Great Wall of China is what theyre talking about
I thought Agricola almost conquered Scotland, until one of the Roman generals and his legion started their own empire and Agricola was called back to do battle in Iraq?
There were also two Roman walls that spanned Britain and Scotland and provided an easy buffer...
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE A MOVIE WITH A SHIT LOAD OF KILLING AND EPIC MOVES?! Gore. REAL gore. I want something like the show "Spartacus" But even more epic. The story is a really fucking enraged guy that will kill ANYONE. None of that pussy good or bad. Just kill and do it SUPER bad ass with swords hahahaha. epic slo motion. I can see it all in my head... I wish I could make movies :/
Another roman movie.... we need more creative directors.. how about movies about other empires.. mongols... song. Hang.. byzantine.. ottoman.. german... russia.. maya.. inca.... Mexica... japanese... mali... ghana... even greek .
@ninja909 The Romans were barbaric pricks who stole all of their technology and knowledge from other cultures. You need to stop reading books written by Roman propagandists. The celts were demonized by the barabaric romans when in fact their culture and technology was very advanced.
@Pcoar the celts did some good things, they invented chainmail I believe, but they also flocked nakid and lived in woods and put enemy heads on pikes outside of their homes. Rome did invent manny of it's own things but they also took what they found usefull from other cultures. you learn to youse the enemies benifets against them. but rome was mostly based off of greece, obviously.
@ninja909 The celts did not "flock naked in the woods," and i really have no idea where you found the information to support that. They took enemy commander's heads in battle out of respect, because they believed that the human soul dwelled in the head, not for the purpose of brutality. At least they werent as bad as the Romans who enslaved and raped entire races of people, then watched them kill each other in the arena.
@Pcoar I''ve not done much research on the celts so i wouldn't know but just from what i've heard other people tell mem the've said that the celts would fight nakid from time to time and paint themselves blue. something to scare the enemy or something. as for rome, it realy just depended who was in ruling. nero was insane and did many horrible things. other rulers like constantine the great were pretty good. either way, romans were still bad ass.
@ninja909 It was the Picts that painted themselves blue and fought naked, they're the reason Hadrian built that wall, to keep out those they couldn't conquer.
@JoeTomFrank"Great Wall of China", are you fucking stupid? Its Hadrian's Wall dumbass. You're one of the reasons people think Americans are stupid. Do some research before you say stupid shit asshole.
There was another movie out this fall that left off right where this one takes up in N. Britain, called Centurion, but the Hollywood imbeciles didn't roll out the huge marketing campaign for it like they do so much other crap like their "comedies"...and it failed.
Good rental though. Would have been a good hit in theaters if Hollywood's marketing strategy wasn't gay.
Your point is valid, but the point I was trying to articulate was that the story was told in a one hour episode of ROME. Of all the actors I've seen protray Roman soldiers, Channing Tatum does not embody the theatrical skills, accent, or the talent to carry the story from book to film in any way whatsoever. GI Joe didn't exactly boost his credentials as believable either. Maybe he just needs to STEP UP. Or have you even seen ROME the HBO series?
Blah blah everyone is suddenly a historian with a PhD in classical history on youtube. I'm just glad none of the actors are trying to pass a pompous British accent like in ALL films set in antiquity these days.
@cannonballkid I completely agree with you. I enjoy the absence of fake Brittish accents in movies portraying Ancient Rome and an even greater absebse of psuedo-intellectuals on YouTube. But hey, if people can just enjoy a movie for what it is, and not a source of historical education, they would be far less vocal about the content and give a more honest review. Going to see this at 12noon. I'll let y'all know wha I think. It looks fun.
lol they show ever pointless drama bit they had in the movie. Dad dies Son takes command Army laughs at son Son sets out to reclaim family honor, takes slave with him Son finds info, dad died and slave knows about it Son is pissed, slaves tribe captures son slave is now in charge Son and slave steel "stupid gold bird thingy" They run They get away I just saved you $40.00 and 2 hours of your life
This preview made me build armor to put around by penis and ballsack area. I need no other garmets to protect myself, just the 20 square feet of brass I used to cover my large member.
Historical novel my ass. If you want to see this movie, just watch the first episode of HBO's ROME. this movie is a rip off of it .Also let me add, it looks as if it lacks the authenticity that ROME had. Once you see ROME the fact that they made this movie about recovering something the could have easily reproduced will piss you off that you spent good money on a story that was already told in 1 hour.
@dallasdawg2010 Not all plots in "Rome" are based on actual events. Pompey didn't actually steal Caesar's eagle. Rome was a fantastic series; I watched it twice. But it's not the defining piece for the 'ancient Rome' genre. A movie doesn't have to be a "Rome" movie to be good.
@TheOnlineCommunity Point taken. As I mentioned before, Bruno Heller did take poetic license for the ROME series, maybe even stole the idea for the first episode from the book. But there have been several movies and television series since GLADIATOR where you see the eagle but its importance is never mentioned. No, a movie about ancient Rome does not have to be ROME to be great, but Channing Tatum? C'mon man! A plot this close to the last ancient Rome movie that mentioned an eagle standard?
@dallasdawg2010 Yeah, they could have gotten a good actor for the role. But assuming the two plots don't conflict with each other, I think it's cool that this movie can somewhat serve as a followup to centurion.
@TheOnlineCommunity Thanks. What's sad is that Tatum continues to get leading roles that could possibly sink his career to insignificance. He needs dramatic supporting roles instead of this forced push upon the public. Daniel Craig would have knocked the role out of the park. Redford refused the role of Michael Corleone and Will Smith refused the role of Neo. Ask yourself, what the hell kind money grubbing agent puts his client whose stock was on the rise in a position to fail again?
This looks like a fun movie about ancient Rome, like King Arthur or Gladiator, as well as the series' Rome and Spartacus. I love movie/ shows like this, but there is little to no chance of me going to see this movie because I just watched the entire movie. Every plot point/ twist was just revealed to us in this trailer, so why waste 10 bucks seeing a movie for 2 hours that I just saw in 2 min 30 seconds? WHEN WILL THEY LEARN NOT TO SPOIL AN ENTIRE MOVIE IN THE TRAILER?
@MercC23k your the idiot that watched the trailor :D idc if we know what happens for shit sakes there are people that read books that turn into movies they know whats going to happen but they enjoy it SO STFU and use your brain
@MercC23k Because some people don't go to movies for as if its story-time like you do, they go to see awesome scenes and action. The trailer also didn't include whether or not the eagle was retrieved and there are possibly other plot twists that weren't shown in the trailer.
Really hope they don't portray the celts as the 'bad guys'. Kinda feel bad for them considering the Romans just came in and destroyed their entire culture >.< Hmm maybe i should read the Eagle and the Ninth, i've read the Pict (kinda sorta good, meh) and the Eagle and the Raven :P (btw, this is the second roman/celtic movie about the Ninth Legion in a span of a couple months....weirdness)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO this is the roman legion that made it all the way to china I think this is gonna be really cool like a true adeventure across the world kinda thing!
this is nothing like the book Eska is supposed to be completely loyal to the Aquila he never would betray Aquila AND before they go North Eska is granted his freedom so that he can choose if he wants to go help him find the eagle or not he is only a slave in Rome
this shows way too much about the movie. like how the slave betrays the main character, that wouldve been so much more intense if i found out while watching it
The Celts who were more advanced than the Romans at one time, and sacked Rome too, look way too primitive in this movie. Looks like an Imperialism loving movie.
I do like rebellions stupid. But the Celts wouldn't be rebels against the invading Roman Empire. They had chain mail and long swords and big full body shields which around 200 BC Romans the Romans fighting as outdated hoplites adopted the big shields and armor of the celts. Point being is that they were not primitive American Indian looking tribes fighting some far more advanced civilized people with British accents at any point in history.
@likeabillionbucks only celtic nobles could afford armor like that, the majority fought with little armor or shields. and they don't look like native americans at all.
Yeah they definitely look like an American Indian tribe from the north east especially. What they don't look like are Celts. Wooden shields weren't exclusive to nobles by virtue of them being expensive.
Look the movie did the classic Hollywood trope of depicting the Romans as the civilized masters of the world and the Barbarian Celts as primitive stoneage people.
@likeabillionbucks no most celts fought with spears and little to no armor. swords and chainmail were very exspensive to make, only nobles could afford that kind of equipment. and romans did not fight like hoplites they fought using a sheildwall with shortswords while hoplights used a phalanx relying on spears. and i looked at them again and i agree they look alot like a northern american indian tribe.
@Bigred17756 . Like I said a shield wouldn't be so expensive as not to be affordable. Its arguable that the warrior class of Celts in many Celtic nations would have been able to afford armor and swords since that is what they would be doing most of their lives. The Celts who did fight naked did so to show their bravery above all. The Romans did fight as hoplites with spears before adopting the "shieldwall" and sword tactics from CELTS they encountered in northern Italy.
@soccernerd200 Yes it is a MOVIE, but it is supposed to be a HISTORICAL MOVIE, regardless of the story being fictional or not. If you noticed, I didn't make a comment on the story but on the HISTORICAL INACCURACIES. Why don't you learn some history and educated yourself before you start calling somebody an IDIOT? 8 other people appreciated my ability to point these facts out. If you prefer to be ignorant, then you will never know the true story of these two civilizations.
@tootoot123 No, he does state that this is his first command but a centurion, who would be in charge of a century (80 men) would not all of a sudden get to be in charge of a legion (roughly 4800 men). A centurion would have come from the average civilian and is similar to an nco, where as a legatus legionis would be of equestrian or higher class would gain control of a legion after some time of service as an officer. So it's like Aquila is wearing sargent rank where general stars should be.

aw, they basically just showed you the entire movie.

Really hope they don't portray the celts as the 'bad guys'. Kinda feel bad for them considering the Romans just came in and destroyed their entire culture >.< Hmm maybe i should read the Eagle and the Ninth, i've read the Pict (kinda sorta good, meh) and the Eagle and the Raven :P (btw, this is the second roman/celtic movie about the Ninth Legion in a span of a couple months....weirdness)

phalanx fails without spears
Trollin4Evar 1 year ago
@Trollin4Evar Rome didn't use Phalanx. They have tower shields and short swords. They used shield walls and testudo. Read up on Roman warfare.

The Celts who were more advanced than the Romans at one time, and sacked Rome too, look way too primitive in this movie. Looks like an Imperialism loving movie.
likeabillionbucks 1 year ago
@likeabillionbucks (Looks like a rebellion loving comment.) That's stupid. Were the more advanced in the 2nd century AD? There's your answer.
mcdonoughdm 1 year ago
@mcdonoughdm
I do like rebellions stupid. But the Celts wouldn't be rebels against the invading Roman Empire. They had chain mail and long swords and big full body shields which around 200 BC Romans the Romans fighting as outdated hoplites adopted the big shields and armor of the celts. Point being is that they were not primitive American Indian looking tribes fighting some far more advanced civilized people with British accents at any point in history.
likeabillionbucks 1 year ago
@likeabillionbucks only celtic nobles could afford armor like that, the majority fought with little armor or shields. and they don't look like native americans at all.
Bigred17756 1 year ago
@Bigred17756

Bigred17756 1 year ago
@likeabillionbucks no most celts fought with spears and little to no armor. swords and chainmail were very exspensive to make, only nobles could afford that kind of equipment. and romans did not fight like hoplites they fought using a sheildwall with shortswords while hoplights used a phalanx relying on spears. and i looked at them again and i agree they look alot like a northern american indian tribe.
Bigred17756 1 year ago
@Bigred17756 . Like I said a shield wouldn't be so expensive as not to be affordable. Its arguable that the warrior class of Celts in many Celtic nations would have been able to afford armor and swords since that is what they would be doing most of their lives. The Celts who did fight naked did so to show their bravery above all. The Romans did fight as hoplites with spears before adopting the "shieldwall" and sword tactics from CELTS they encountered in northern Italy.

KamakazeBill267 1 year ago
Some points I didn't like:
1.How does a centurion command a legion?
2. I know how his father lost the battle, he used a testudo formation ( 1:39 ) when the enemy was right in front of him >.>
3.Also, whats with the swords above the scutum ( 2:18 ) I'm sure Romans or Roman trained barbarians would not fight like that.
I'm sure there are many more historical inaccuracies *sigh*

they should of whached Rome atleast the HBO series
crackshack2 1 year ago
@Xadryn18 And also the fact that all of the armor and weaponry looks suspiciously like stainless steel, and is used incorrectly.
VladtheImpaler31 1 year ago
@Xadryn18 The only point i disagree with is that it never says he is in cammand of a legion it says his father was.
Bigred17756 1 year ago
@Bigred17756 at :27 he prays that he does not dishonor his legion, and at :35 they say "our new commander, Marcus Aquila"

soccernerd200 1 year ago
@soccernerd200 Yes it is a MOVIE, but it is supposed to be a HISTORICAL MOVIE, regardless of the story being fictional or not. If you noticed, I didn't make a comment on the story but on the HISTORICAL INACCURACIES. Why don't you learn some history and educated yourself before you start calling somebody an IDIOT? 8 other people appreciated my ability to point these facts out. If you prefer to be ignorant, then you will never know the true story of these two civilizations.
Xadryn18 1 year ago
@Xadryn18 Who gives a shit, both the civilizations are dead.

goodfty 1 year ago
@Xadryn18 for the first one, wasnt he just promoted though?
tootoot123 1 year ago
@tootoot123 No, he does state that this is his first command but a centurion, who would be in charge of a century (80 men) would not all of a sudden get to be in charge of a legion (roughly 4800 men). A centurion would have come from the average civilian and is similar to an nco, where as a legatus legionis would be of equestrian or higher class would gain control of a legion after some time of service as an officer. So it's like Aquila is wearing sargent rank where general stars should be.
