This was a great movie but this scene was sad along with when he was a teenager and couldn't go to his mothers funeral, when he was kicked out of the Forbidden CIty, and when his drug ridden wife returns at the end of WWII.
I'm so honored to have the director's version of this movie! There was so much from the original version that was not shown but, this is even better! A little long but, better! :)
Some rare personal photos of Emperor Pu Yi of Manchukuo (state visit to Japan 1935), Queen Elizabeth II (royal visit to Australia), Prince Charles (in Edinburgh), Bill Clinton (in Berlin), Sultan of Brunei, White Rajahs of Sarawak, Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan (visit to Sydney), etc. have been posted here:-
However, PuYi was nothing like the driven, calculating, man portrayed in the film. If you read the book The Last Emperor by Albert Brachman, you'll see he was just a puppet all his life, and the only real power he ever had was the power to have his eunuchs flogged for his personal pleasure.
His marriage to (Elizabeth) Wan Jun was never consummated, which is a real bummer, because she was FUCKING HOT in the photos.
glad to know that I'm not the only one who wacthed this movie 10 times...honestly I even wacthed it 12 times. So, I don't care people said I'm a bit obsessed with this movie. For me..it's a timeless piece...and timeless masterpiece deserves to be enjoyed again and again..:-) I got the special 20th anniversary edition...and..just finished watchng it..:-)
im obsessed with history... i luv asian history cuz im a big fanatic!!!!!! people think its boring but its interesting and we have to know origins and past of the world to learn from it!!!! (got that from my history teacher) well yup i luv asian history (maybe cuz im asian) well you learn knew things from people every day! just gotta enjoy life as it comes... well i dont know how it got there but well i suscribed to you!!!
@fahrenheitchic i agree with you i love this film i always think about the end then i just remember it all i watched it on sky everybody watch this film its the best! :)
In many respects Puyi was a typical Chinese leader, thinking of others as not people but tools for his pleasure. His hero-worship of Hitler is one example of this - Puyi thought Hitler was a strong leader justified in his conquests; another is Puyi's behaviour at his trial. Concepts of authority(might rather than right) have changed little since 1908; technology has advanced but chinese culture is still medieval. Puyi's life is a fascinating story but would be nice to hear in Mandarin.
The whole movie is very good! Pu Yi becomes the emperor after the Empress Dowager Ci Xi dies. he doesnt rule long because of the Chinese Revelution. His mother dies of druging herself of large amounts of Opium. it is very sad how he didnt really love his wives and consorts and his bad disisions for the Chinese Empire and how their is no more rule for china and he is not a king instead he is just a normal citizen. he lost riches etc.
the emperor's mother, an ethnic chinese married to manchurian prince. Felt bad for her since it looks like she cannot bear to part with her son, he's so cute!!The palace is such a bad place for his childhood.
super weird when the chinese royals speak english language.

Yes I was sad for John and Joan too, but America is still false freedom for people of color in the west.

The last emperor finally confessed he was a Chinese and repented what he had done in Manchukuo a puppet of Japan.
Not like French and Russian revolutions, lives of the Qing emperor and his nobles were spared.

Where is PuYi's birthplace in China? I'm somehow never able to find any information about it online.

One of Hollywoods greatest films. Unsurpassed in splendor, costume and pageantry to this very day. And the music.....the music !

Great film, you'd never know it was made in 1987.

Why is Philip Glass tagged for this? The music is Ryuichi Sakamoto... Glass had nothing to do with this score. What a film, what a score!
