From what I recall it was a fire that wiped out the films. The audio here comes from tape recordings someone made and photographs were stored elsewhere.
@Gutpunchtaker the video recordings were transferred to film so the video tape could be re-used. It was very expensive back then so the beeb wanted to get their money's worth.
The telecine recordings were sold around the world, but as the BBC was only allowed 1 showing and 1 repeat, they were not deemed commercially viable to keep, so when sold other countries, it was either "destroy on site & send certificate" or send back to be destroyed. Normally by bonfire, so partly correct!
@Gutpunchtaker As for the stills, pass how they got saved. They may even be from off-air recordings ie people setting up a cine camera pointing at their telly!
This is wonderful to be able to watch. Could you reconstruct some of the other missing eps? Like maybe the only Christmas Special done in the Classic Series, Episode 7 of The Daleks Masterplan entitled "The Feast of Steven"?
why dont the bbc just animate these episodes like they did for the invasion

Does anyone know why the beeb wiped the tapes, but kept stills of every shot? Hows that work?

"....but kept stills of every shot?"
Apparently, there was a guy called John Cura who took lots of photos of the 1960s Dr.Who sets.

Hahaha, the conversation at 1:00. The Dalek sounds like it says "Oh baby".
It's another case of sexual air supply.
