My favorite Styx song. Love the pre-MIDI synths (back when synths had their own unique sound before they became bad imitations of acoustic instruments) Dennis's vocals and JY's killer solo! Saw them live in 1996 and the absolutely nailed this and Lorelei. Awesome show!
@UberKrispy hmmm.......I'm wondering where you're from? We may have problems, but I love my country, nonetheless.....it's called love enough to get in the trenches and try to fix what is wrong............
@TheBunnyist What do you mean, "Hmmmm" what are you Sherlock Holmes? I'm an American you dunderhead. I love my country too, and I'm just as American as you! But its obvious that the country is in sad, sorry shape. I predict the USA will collapse someday, much like the old USSR, and become nothing more than 50 seperate states or 5 different "regions". Its like that now, no one gives 2 shits about anyone else. A collection of fat, selfish "me! me!" slob individuals rather than a United nation
@TheBunnyist Why did you ask where i'm from? WTF diff would it make? Can anyone from any other country point that the USA is fat, lazy and selfish? Its stating the obvious. Americans are a pathetic group of people, won't lift a finger to help their countryman, whine and cry when they are asked to sacrifice for the good of the nation. A collection of 300 million individuals rather than a united nation. The USA was a failed experiment in liberty. Man can't handle it, he'll fuck it up somehow
@UberKrispy Pissed off, are we uber??? You're just as sad and pathetic as those Tea-Baggers who think they own the joint. Oh, and yeah, by the way.....I'm a WELL TRAVELLED person: I've been out of this country numerous times, and trust me........there ARE those from outside of this country who DO indeed believe the filth you spew. I've just never heard your level of venom from a fellow American. That's why I ask - but, my guess is you've never been off your hometown block for you to ask......
@TheBunnyist Well the truth must hurt, doesn't it? And the Teabaggers can all kiss my ass, they're a big part of the problem: hate the government, refuse to help your fellow man, what do you have left? A collection of 300 million individuals, not a Nation. The USA is an old and washed up. Bad roads, failing infrastructure, shit education system, stupid children, dumb adults. USA couldn't re-invent Herself. She sat around preening in the mirror while the rest of the world outworked Her
@UberKrispy You are a fucking IDIOT! One of the greatest entitlements that our great country has given all of us is the freedom of speech. If it wasn't for that neither you or I would be able to have this ridiculous banter. So in short if you are not happy with the U.S. or are unwilling to pitch in to make her better., than get the fuck out, got eat camel shit, you ungrateful bastard.
@inabit68 Why would you reference "camel shit" in your response? A little jab against the Middle East? You probably are 40 lbs. overweight, are a NASCAR fan, shop at Walmart and have never been outside the USA
@UberKrispy Thank you for confirming my first thought, your a fucking IDIOT. Actually I am retired from the U.S. Army. So you are wrong with all of your assumptions. While my assumptions of you remains the same. You would suck a dick to the ballbag, you liberal turd burgler!
@inabit68 Yeah call me a "liberal" you fucking moron. You were in the Army because you were too fucking stupid for the Air Force, and not tough enough for the Marines. You pissed your life away in the Army while i work to pay your pension and free mediical so when you get treatment your veneral diseases, I pay the bill. Fucking mooch!
@UberKrispy Wow, learn to spell or use your spell checker on your computer. Your grammar is 3rd grade level at best. So as I am fishing of off the coast of Belize I need you to keep flipping those burgers. Remember to ask your customers "would you like to supersize that"? Also tell your mom to send me my watch, I must of dropped it when I was violating her ass the other night. Save yourself any more embarrassment and just don't reply, your will never be on my level!
Every year throughout the 80s, 90s and part of the '00s, every holiday season KISW 99.9 Seattle would start the Top 1000 rock songs of all time countdown through New Year's as voted by listeners and this song always fell right around #10 overall on the list. Truly a classic masterpiece by a great band.
This song definitely has a double meaning. But I think it was shades of Vietnam and all the protests of the turbulent late 60s. I've been listening to this album for over 30 years and I still don't think I completely get it.
Long live classic rock. I miss the concerts. Saw Styx sometime around the summer of 1976.
@MrGlenntipton 1- I'm not sure in what manner you mean by different, whether it's structurally, the meaning of the lyrics, or the key itself, but I have to respectfully say yes it is quite different. While the structures are similar, this song has only one chorus before the solo, while MitW has two. Both do have an "interlude" of some sort before the solos/breakdowns, but then again most songs do. MitW's verse are shorter with a longer chorus section, and this song just the opposite.
@MrGlenntipton 2- I've never thoroughly analyzed the lyrics of either song, but just from listening to them I'd have to say that the meanings of both are very different. The lengths of them are close, but this one is a bit longer. This song actually has an "ending" whereas MitW fades out. The tempo fluctuates in both tunes, but this one has a range of about 61-80 bpm, and MitW's is about 68-80 bpm, with the high points at the solos in both songs.
@MrGlenntipton 3 - So they do have a similar feel as far as timing goes. I'm not too good with keys, but my best guess is that MitW is in the key of e minor, while this song is in the key of b minor. So since those are two entirely differently keys, they're both going to have a different sound pitch wise. They do however both have a darker tone because of them being in minor keys, so there's another similarity for you.
@MrGlenntipton 4 - Another thing to add is that Dennis DeYoung sings the lead in this song and Tommy Shaw sings the lead in MitW, so vocal wise they also sound different. Shaw also did the lead guitar in MitW, and I'm not sure whether it was James Young or John Curulewski on lead for this one or not. Obviously since Shaw wasn't in the at this point, it IS someone other than him, meaning a different style of soloing.
@MrGlenntipton 5 - I'd like to think Curulewski was more rhythm and Young - lead, so my guess is Young on the solo in this one. I apologize for the essay. I don't think I could've over-analyzed those songs any more (haha). And being a smart-ass was not my intention at all. I was really just trying my best to give an intelligent answer to your question rather than just a flat out "yes". So yes, I do think the two songs in question are very different indeed. Hope this helps.
absolutely stunning song...first time ive heard it . big fan of styx from late 70s, just got back into their music lately on you tube, brings back a lot of awsm memories.
Thank you for posting this. This song is meant to have the 12 string acoustic intro played with it. No Classic AOR station back in the 1970's would have done differently.
in two years, this has only gotten 40 thousand views?!? WHAT THE FUCK....I assume everybody else has this record and listens to it all the time and Youtube is too important for them
I was able to see these guys in 78, 96 and 97. Seattle tour 78. 96 at The Gorge at George, WA and Return to Paradise Tour in 97. They ROCK every time!
The exact same chords and structure progression as babe im gonna leave you by led zeppelin up until the final guitar riff that makes this song more enjoyable for me to listen to than led zeppelin's song.
@AriaanBeowulfSpeaking of Babe im gonna leave you.... Have you seen the Howard Stern truth behind Led Zeppelin interview here on youtube? You'll be amazed how much Zep borrowed from others. Just type in Howard stern Led Zeppelin and watch. Opie and Anthony have stuff on youtube as well. Zep is still awesome...but you will be amazed.
Styx,ELO,Kansas ect...... were so much better and inventive in the early seventy's then AM/FM demanded more pop songs so they changed with the times......what a shame
America!! America!! America!! America!! I saw my young soldiers die in Iraq for...America!! I am a retired US Army combat Sergeant. I only wish I could have given my life for my country...I would have done so proudly. as they did...I am humbled by them...Sarn't...
@AriaanBeowulf I can see your point to some degree, perhaps I'm a little too patriotic when I'm drunk. But that's me all over, I'm cool with it. You however, sound like a conspiracy theory ridden, cheese eating high school punk that can't accept the simple explanations. Military industrial complex to enrich the elite?? I think you only write things because you love to hear yourself talk. Time to wake up?? How bout this "old man" put you to sleep...yeah...just kiddin...kinda...
@gwrousse32 Hey 11B...I respect your opinion...Aaaaaannnnnnddd Roger.... I now have many 11B brothers I didn't have before. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what they do and who they are. I have much more respect for you and what you do than some of the A-wads on here. I hope you serve your time admirably and honorably and then take what you've learned and go out into this great country and carve out y'self a big ol helpin of this here American Pie!! Love you, Brother, don't forget it..
@KarimBoctorAwad...You are aware that I like what it means to me. Again, I realize I get a little too patriotic when I'm blitzed. Surprised I was able to even type that on that particular night. If they are criticizing the U.S....then fuck them in the ass with a big rubber dick. But I think you're wrong, A-wad, I think the simplest interpretation is usually the most accurate, I see little in the lyrics to support your claim. If I'm wrong so be it. Either way, stop crying...
@mundrubjet I'm a retired Navy vet, I hear you and love you like a brother. We both survived so our mission now is to carry on and try to bring peace to the world.
@mundrubjet People become unstable due to their experience in war, as it seems you have. Wishing you had died is absurd. Having served your country you can be proud, and also proud to continue to serve while still alive. Every American life lost in war is a victory for the enemy. I did my job and served my country, and I am still alive, and I'm damned proud of that fact.
Truly one of the great rock anthems. Yet Styx seems to get no credit because of some of the drivel they put out later which in NO WAY diminishes epic songs like this! I love the early proggy stuff where they really went off. They were like two different bands from early-mid 70s then the pop-driven AM sounding stuff. But damn this was great. I miss early FM too when DJs were free to be as eclectic as they wanted choosing the tracks they bled. Damn, just LOVE the mtvification of rock. No really.
Just saw them the other night in Austin, with Tommy, JY and Lawrence Gowan (Dennis's replacement). It was an amazing concert in a smaller venue. Chuck Pannozzo played bass on a few songs. And this song was a killer along with Crystal Ball.
Thank you for sharing this. I've loved this song since "Back in the day" and still love it. I don't think it ever really got the recognition or airplay it should've.
this album is what got me out of disco and forever into rock and roll, thanks to my brother Joe who played it over and over and I thank him for that and know he is in rock and roll heaven right now. Thanks bro!!
My high school buddies and I are reuniting for a band that covers "Suite Madam Blue" (very well actually) and tonight while searching, I remembered for the first time in like 30 years that "SMB" had a prelude. JC was amazing. Remember "Krakatoa" that bled into the "Hallelujah Chorus?" Spine-tingling.
Sometimes, I wonder what Styx would have turned into if Curulewski hadnt left. They seem to be more progressive rock in the pre-Tommy Shaw era, like Movement for The Common Man and this one.
AWESOME.......Bands were so much more about the artwork of their craft a generation ago......LOVE the whole instrumental intro....Bands just dont do that any more.....And where in the hell have all the great guitar solos gone.....? The INTRO sounds like something YES's STEVE HOWE would have done.
I love the pace of this song.Styxs' stairway. BTW ,if you've never seen them in concert, go when you get the chance. They pair up with great bands like Kansas, Bad Co., REO..............
This was pretty much a love song for my buddy Dave and his woman back in '77 or so...he and his wife have now been married for 32 years and counting...
Man, I see all these versions of SMB, but they all leave out an integral part, the intro, aka "prelude12", the tune sounds naked without it, thanx for posting this incredible and very timeless piece of genius, Stxy dude or dudette! :o) ~peace~
@corbinamondo Actually for at least a year I was unable to upload most of these songs, only 37 of them were allowed up but then one day they were all allowed. I can not even attempt to explain it but all I know is I am very glad they allow it now.
@StyxFan93 Perhaps they finally figured out that people don't buy music they've never heard, and you're not going to hear this stuff on the radio anymore unless you listen to oldies stations, in which case you probably already own it. The last 7 CDs I bought were because I heard the music here on youtube first.
@StyxFan93 I think it had something to do with the resolved legalities because Shaw & Young finally won the right to perform these songs publically and I'm so glad. None this band's material needs to sit on a fuckin shelf!
@StyxFan93 the reason why is Chuck Panozzo alowed the rights to the a/m catalog. I know him on Facebook....he and James Young are the sole original members left. JY has no say in promotional issues
@devonsch Ah just become a real fan and buy all the recordings man? Like styx has far better songs than the hits that people know them for, try queen of spades!
Thank God I got to see DeYong do this in concert! I bought my first Styx album entitled "Styx" cause I thought the Album Cover was cool and I was into Greek Mythology. As a young teen, this was the most valuable album I ever bought! I hold many of Styx's songs near and dear to my heart, but do not feel many people actually knew the social statement DeYoung (as with Mr. Roboto) was trying to convey.
Dennis is the "voice" of "STYX", and he actually gave me a rose at one of his concerts!
I've often said Dennis DeYoung IS STYX! He's the greatest isn't he? Glad he gave you a rose. Very cool! I wont go see them anymore because he's not in the band.
@PAULNIEM I agree with you there. Styx has become a cover band, yes they carry the name and have members that were apart of the heyday of the band, but they are a cover band without Dennis Deyoung. Now I'm not saying anything bad about Lawrence Gowan, he is a very talented musician, but his voice isn't meant for the Deyoung songs. One thing I've thought about recently, there are a lot of bands with two or more keyboardists, and Gowan has the songs he had written and covered in Styx.
@wrennmilton I think that was a coincidence and not necessarily related. The song that made them famous ("Lady") was pre-Tommy, but happened to break the charts just at the time of the change. I love every Styx album before Kilroy, but my favorites are the 2nd - 5th albums, all pre-Tommy. I'm not trying to dis Tommy. It's simply a fact in my case. I saw Styx live every year from the Equinox tour to the Paradise Theatre tour. I saw them two nights in a row on the Cornerstone tour.
@jwmellott Yes, I use that picture because it is the only one I can find of the band while John Curulewski was still a member, if i could find another I would use it, because believe me i don't like seeing them naked any more than the rest of you, lol. John quit the band after this album and they replaced him with Tommy.
@Shwaggetyshfifty That was actually Dennis DeYoung, I believe it happened just before the Styxworld Live 2001 tour, if I'm wrong somebody please correct me. He got the sickness that is called "Light Poisoning" which does as you described. He had migraines and such that prevented him from being able to perform. The rest of the band did not want to wait for him to recover so they replaced him with Lawrence Gowan for the tour, and he has remained ever since.
@StyxFan93 You're correct, it was Dennis DeYoung, but I believe this happened prior to Tommy Shaw joining the band. It's a damned shame, anyhow. DeYoung was a hell of a prog rock keyboard player,
@StyxFan93 I thought it happened in 1999, when they were putting Brave New World together, after it was released Dennis still ill, Tommy and JY wanted him to commit to a full tour? Either way, I think Dennis Deyoung was back stabbed. He was the backbone of that band, he is the reason they caught on nation wide. What does Tommy and JY do? Kick him out, basically give Dennis no credit whatsoever to the creation and the gained fame for Styx.
@mrroboto5785 I think you are correct, 1999 sounds like the right year, I must have been confusing some things, but either way I agree that it was unfair to Dennis because I don't care what anybody says, Styx would not be what they are today if not for Dennis.
@jerseystitch You can bet the farm that if you hear acoustic guitar on a Styx record up to Equinox it is John Curulewski, and from Crystal Ball on it is Tommy Shaw. James Young just doesn't do acoustic.
Equinox is easily head & shoulders above any of their others albums, as far as musicianship, material, production & listenability. This has always been my favorite song from them. I DID wear out the vinyl copy I had-twice! Thank goodness for cd's. ;-)
thanks so much for putting some older Styx on - Equinox was the very first record album I got of Styx, practically wore it out in the 70s. I'm downloading a bunch so I can listen to it, when I'm not online, lol!
This and The Grand Illusion are my favourite Styx songs. They are just so awesome! I also love the Tommy Shaw rockers, but these are epic in a different sense. Crystal Ball is my 3rd favourite.

The exact same chords and structure progression as babe im gonna leave you by led zeppelin up until the final guitar riff that makes this song more enjoyable for me to listen to than led zeppelin's song.
But they did overtly rip off zeppelin.
AriaanBeowulf 7 months ago
@AriaanBeowulfSpeaking of Babe im gonna leave you.... Have you seen the Howard Stern truth behind Led Zeppelin interview here on youtube? You'll be amazed how much Zep borrowed from others. Just type in Howard stern Led Zeppelin and watch. Opie and Anthony have stuff on youtube as well. Zep is still awesome...but you will be amazed.

You werent fighting for America, you were fighting for the military industrial complex to enrich the elite. Time to wake up old man.
AriaanBeowulf 7 months ago
@AriaanBeowulf I can see your point to some degree, perhaps I'm a little too patriotic when I'm drunk. But that's me all over, I'm cool with it. You however, sound like a conspiracy theory ridden, cheese eating high school punk that can't accept the simple explanations. Military industrial complex to enrich the elite?? I think you only write things because you love to hear yourself talk. Time to wake up?? How bout this "old man" put you to sleep...yeah...just kiddin...kinda...

@mundrubjet You think your alone? Pick up the pieces and move on. Just the humble opinion of a lowly 11B.

@mundrubjet Sacrifice is not what makes Americans great , it is what happens afterword.
gwrousse32 4 months ago
@mundrubjet you are aware that this song is actually criticizing america, aren't you?
KarimBoctorAwad 3 months ago
@KarimBoctorAwad...You are aware that I like what it means to me. Again, I realize I get a little too patriotic when I'm blitzed. Surprised I was able to even type that on that particular night. If they are criticizing the U.S....then fuck them in the ass with a big rubber dick. But I think you're wrong, A-wad, I think the simplest interpretation is usually the most accurate, I see little in the lyrics to support your claim. If I'm wrong so be it. Either way, stop crying...
mundrubjet 3 months ago
@KarimBoctorAwad No, it's not criticizing America. It was written for the bicentennial.

@corbinamondo Actually for at least a year I was unable to upload most of these songs, only 37 of them were allowed up but then one day they were all allowed. I can not even attempt to explain it but all I know is I am very glad they allow it now.
StyxFan93 1 year ago 3
@StyxFan93 Perhaps they finally figured out that people don't buy music they've never heard, and you're not going to hear this stuff on the radio anymore unless you listen to oldies stations, in which case you probably already own it. The last 7 CDs I bought were because I heard the music here on youtube first.

Dennis is the "voice" of "STYX", and he actually gave me a rose at one of his concerts!
remfanbeforu 2 years ago 11
@remfanbeforu
I've often said Dennis DeYoung IS STYX! He's the greatest isn't he? Glad he gave you a rose. Very cool! I wont go see them anymore because he's not in the band.
PAULNIEM 1 year ago 2
@PAULNIEM I agree with you there. Styx has become a cover band, yes they carry the name and have members that were apart of the heyday of the band, but they are a cover band without Dennis Deyoung. Now I'm not saying anything bad about Lawrence Gowan, he is a very talented musician, but his voice isn't meant for the Deyoung songs. One thing I've thought about recently, there are a lot of bands with two or more keyboardists, and Gowan has the songs he had written and covered in Styx.
mrroboto5785 1 year ago
@remfanbeforu I feel the same!!

@StyxFan93 and best move they ever made, they shot to stardom after Tom was hired.
wrennmilton 1 year ago
@wrennmilton I think that was a coincidence and not necessarily related. The song that made them famous ("Lady") was pre-Tommy, but happened to break the charts just at the time of the change. I love every Styx album before Kilroy, but my favorites are the 2nd - 5th albums, all pre-Tommy. I'm not trying to dis Tommy. It's simply a fact in my case. I saw Styx live every year from the Equinox tour to the Paradise Theatre tour. I saw them two nights in a row on the Cornerstone tour.
TuberOnTheLoose 1 year ago
@StyxFan93 is the semi-naked scend from before tommy shaw?
jwmellott 1 year ago
@jwmellott Yes, I use that picture because it is the only one I can find of the band while John Curulewski was still a member, if i could find another I would use it, because believe me i don't like seeing them naked any more than the rest of you, lol. John quit the band after this album and they replaced him with Tommy.

@StyxFan93 Do you have this on vinyl? The sleeve had a picture of the group.
Goliath10 1 year ago
@StyxFan93 Was he the one who fell ill to a virus that rendered him hypersensitive to sound and light?
Shwaggetyshfifty 8 months ago
@Shwaggetyshfifty That was actually Dennis DeYoung, I believe it happened just before the Styxworld Live 2001 tour, if I'm wrong somebody please correct me. He got the sickness that is called "Light Poisoning" which does as you described. He had migraines and such that prevented him from being able to perform. The rest of the band did not want to wait for him to recover so they replaced him with Lawrence Gowan for the tour, and he has remained ever since.
StyxFan93 8 months ago
@StyxFan93 You're correct, it was Dennis DeYoung, but I believe this happened prior to Tommy Shaw joining the band. It's a damned shame, anyhow. DeYoung was a hell of a prog rock keyboard player,
Shwaggetyshfifty 8 months ago
@StyxFan93 I thought it happened in 1999, when they were putting Brave New World together, after it was released Dennis still ill, Tommy and JY wanted him to commit to a full tour? Either way, I think Dennis Deyoung was back stabbed. He was the backbone of that band, he is the reason they caught on nation wide. What does Tommy and JY do? Kick him out, basically give Dennis no credit whatsoever to the creation and the gained fame for Styx.
mrroboto5785 7 months ago
@mrroboto5785 I think you are correct, 1999 sounds like the right year, I must have been confusing some things, but either way I agree that it was unfair to Dennis because I don't care what anybody says, Styx would not be what they are today if not for Dennis.
StyxFan93 7 months ago
@StyxFan93 2001 I think 2001 was when Dennis tried to sue Tommy and JY for the use of the name Styx and/or his songs without his consent.
mrroboto5785 7 months ago
@jerseystitch You can bet the farm that if you hear acoustic guitar on a Styx record up to Equinox it is John Curulewski, and from Crystal Ball on it is Tommy Shaw. James Young just doesn't do acoustic.
