@davidadamsawyer -- So, I would actually go with you on that point. I think bullying in public schools is a HUGE problem, but it's one that can very easily be fixed by vigilance of both the parents, teachers and the child being bullied. The parents of the kids who are bullying need to be put on notice or have the children REMOVED from the school so children aren't harmed by bullies. Home-schooling isn't an answer for it though, because the child will never learn valuable coping skills.
@davidadamsawyer -- Kids are bullied to the point of suicide is due to the preposterous religious beliefs of hate-mongering religious parents who teach their children to bully because the vast majority of children who commit suicide, do so because they're gay and because they'd rather DIE than have to live with the repressive and destructive Christian and Muslim beliefs that tell society that there's something wrong with being gay. But to suggest that public schools cause bullying is silly!
@davidadamsawyer -- Can you give an example of what's 'dangerous' about public schools in the US? Granted, there are some inner city schools that can be dangerous because of where they're located, but can you provide an example of this 'hurt and pain' that public schools provide?
What does this 'hurt and pain' look like? Is it children with black eyes? Stomach aches?
Are you starting to see why a rational person like me thinks you're such a FOOL!?
@davidadamsawyer -- What's an 'unhealthy' social skill that public schools teach that home-schooling doesn't? This is EXACTLY what I mean. You just make ridiculous comments but can't provide any valid reason for them. Were you by chance home-schooled yourself? Is that why your attempts at having a debate with me on this subject have failed so miserably? It's starting to sound like your ignorance is getting in the way of allowing you to come up with any reason for your looney position.
@davidadamsawyer -- HAHA!! Just as I thought: You can't come up with any valid reason to support your claim about public schooling vs. home-schooling. You're just like all the rest of the 'home-school' crowd. Unable to provide a valid reason why home-schooling is better. You should just realize that merely SAYING that home-schooling is better for kids doesn't make it so.
I'd be willing to listen, however, you can't come up with a SINGLE valid reason.
@davidadamsawyer -You just don't like hearing what I'm saying because you KNOW it's true and you know that home-schooled kids are being abused. If I had my way, the parents would be neutered or their tubes tied and go to prison for child abuse! Teaching children to be anti-social and reject the world makes them miserable and depressing human beings. Their only happiness in life is this delusional idea of 'eternal salvation' or Heaven or other such religious nonsense and they reject themselves 2!
@davidadamsawyer --Actually, you're wrong. I have seen first hand what happens when children who were home schooled try to attend college. 2 of my best friends had born-again parents who taught them the most unbelievable bunch of NONSENSE, all of which was 100% false! They had to re-learn most of their Science subjects because they were taught that Adam & Eve was actually true, and because the damage was so bad, they tend to believe their stupid parents rather than accept reality. It's very sad!
@davidadamsawyer -- Really? How so? How does homeschooling teach children to 'think outside the box'? Can you give me an example? How could homeschooling possibly surpass the level of exposure to different types of people that public shoals do? Homeschooling parents teach their children to BE prejudiced towards those they hate, just like they are, which is really one of the worst forms of child abuse.
You'd be surprised how many home-schooled kids have been taught evolution is a 'lie'!
@davidadamsawyer -- Going to a place to learn about the culture is far different than being around the people of that culture for 8 hours a day and learning how to socialize and get along with them. The vast majority of all parents who homeschool do so for religious reasons, so we end up with a nation full of Jesus freaks who know nothing about Science and the world around them. Their parents teach them to reject the Truth that is Science and put religious superstition in it's place.
@davidadamsawyer -- In the electronic age, where all of the world's knowledge is at our fingertips, home-schooling could be much easier, but not allowing your children to experience different cultures and beliefs and not allowing them to be exposed to different kinds of people is doing them a great disservice and turning them in to anti-social freaks. That is my point. And I'm not the only one who's said this. There's nothing 'cute' about jesus freaks teaching their kids to be jesus freaks.
@davidadamsawyer -- You may find it insulting, but I'm merely stating the facts. Parents who would choose to home-school their children are abusing them because the public school system in the US and nearly ever other country on the face of the earth is a HELL of a lot more intelligent than ONE set of parents.
Now, if a parent chose to home-school, but had a curriculum developed that taught them more than the public school system, I would say more power to them, but most do NOT.
@davidadamsawyer -- Can you give an example of how you think public schools 'damage' children? I guess I just don't get what some parents would have against getting a well-rounded education in a variety of subjects. The public education system in the US definitely needs work, and needs WAY more money because they aren't funded nearly well enough (thanks to Republican politicians), but aside from that, we aren't too bad. With homeschooling, children will only be as smart as their parents.
Besides, putting your children in public schools teaches them valuable social skills that homeschooing can't possibly provide. The fact is that children who are home schooled are getting a horrible dis-service by their idiotic parents.
The sad thing is that she's admitting what a horrible teacher she is. I wouldn't want my children begging taught by such a bad teacher either, so I understand her choice.
The ONLY people who choose home-schooling for their children are Christian idiots who want to indoctrinate the same lies that they've been duped in to believing.
most public schools in america FAIL THE CHILDREN GREATLY. most children stay dumb or simply memorize large amounts of information and succeed like that. the government is teaching the children to conform & fear authority. they also teach to be terrorists & harass others. most americans are ignorant and very sad. no wonder they keep doing drugs & foreigners come here with better education. it is a systematic destruction of this country. any real patrio will stop the criminals in government.
Multiple millions, if not billions of people, throughout the history of the world probably never got a "formal education" and probably were taught only by their parents and I'm sure they got through life just find and were able to survive to an old age.
Thank you for this very helpful video. Your demeanor is modest but your message is commanding. American public schools have helped make America great and still are the envy of the world. At the same time, many highly educated parents are increasingly realizing that they may be able to offer their children better educations -- academically, socially and emotionally -- outside of (public OR private) school settings. Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts, and all the best to you.
It depends on the kids and the learning environment. I've seen both positive and negative environments in public schooling. the stereotype of rude, impolite kids and barbaric pack mentality behaviour may be true or just bandwagon behaviour if it's not necessarily negative.. but aside from that HS is always better, cause it teaches personalised guidance to the kid's needs whereas public schooling is a blind grab in the bowl when it comes to effectivity. It might work out, or fail pretty badly..
This is good! The only problem I have is that the words "homeschool" and "unschool" are being used interchangeably. They are not the same thing. Thanks for sharing!

Does anyone else find it odd that the primary argument used to defeat home schooling is the argument of "social inadequacy"? Lets be real honest , about 75% of homeschoolers are Evangelicals that are overprotecting their kids . They see evil and sin everywhere almost like a phobia .
An ex home schooled kid started attending school at the 6th grade , his parents didn't allow him to watch Sponge Bob or listen to Rock and roll .Parents strict Baptists .
so because you met ONE rotten set of homeschool parents and that must mean ALL homeschoolers are "Evangelicals that are overprotecting their kids" apperently public school didn't do mch for YOU. I'm not saying public schools are bad or anything but by homeschooling the kids learn at a faster pace because they don't have to wait for everyone else to understand what they are learning that day.
This is ridiculous.i am not a christian and homeschool, not because of religious reason or because we are over protective, but because the schools in our area are not up to par! We do not have TV at all and if we did i still would not let my kids watch spongebob. A little talking sponge running around in his underwear? How stupid is that.We dont have an idiot box because there are so many other things to be done! as for rock n roll..... as long as it isnt vulgar...we listen to all types of music!!
Lilacmoon - then you dont fit the stereotype. My kids both go to public schools one in a unique art school for the gifted . Another a hands on, Montessori school good schools with great kids .
Man I can only imagine what they would have been if they had actually been homeschooled and not herded around like cattle. Good luck to them with getting over the goverment brain washing.
The boy was a gifted musician and was attending SCPA , his mother wouldn't allow him to listen to the Beatles . It was criminally over protection . His mother withdrew him because cussing was to bad by SOME of the kids .Ruined his training and career as musician .
Just yesterday my public school band teacher said that I am so much more independent then most of her public school students, who rely so much on the teachers that she doesn't know how they will be able to make it through high school.
@lilpinky0880 homeschoolers learn to teach themselves and think for themselves. They are spontaneous and take initiative. Unfortunately public school kids are taught from kindergarten to sit and wait for instructions. So sad. How will they make it through LIFE? I think we would have much better people in our world if it weren't for the oppressive public schools!
Homeschoolers are better socialized because they can be around other people during the school day! There isn't 8 hours that you are stuck with the same 30ish kids! Like me, I can go to my uncles store and help people.
yes, the public schools are the perfect place for children to learn what is "cool", what to buy that makes people more "cool", what makes someone "weird" (eg. reading at recess), and the list goes on.... it is all about fitting into mainstream ideas of what to be and no longer about being your unique self.
public schools are the most sheep-creating, unique-spark extinguishing places anyone can go.
Its the responsobility of the parents to find a neighborhood withgood school and kids .Most dont shop around enough ,think of themselfs not the kids .
I think it's the responsebility of the parents to raise and educate their children on their own. Not to hand it over to a school teacher who has to educate 30 children at the same time.
Yes, I wish I was homeschooled. I had many problems with different schools. Now I'm staying at home for a while. And I don't mind to be with my dear mom cause we have a very good relationship.
Its the responsobility of the parents to find a neighborhood with a good school and kids .Most parents dont shop around enough ,think of themselfs and not the kids .
I went to a public school SCPA , the first of its kind in the country (specialising in training gifted artists ). Mom /Dad could never have never recreated any of that .
I have taught in public schools and I homeschool as well! At least 30 of my homeschooling friends are also former public school teachers! What does this tell you?
Homeschooling makes a child more sociable as they have more time to be.
In class your not allowed to talk and your learning time is limited and rushed.
We also get to go out more and are not stuck inside. I homeschool becouse it is the best for my child and she was restricted at school even though she had great teachers.
I do alot with my child and if you haven't got that commitment then it won't work and it will be boring.

Just have a quick question: I am also a teacher and was wondering if you have ever seen social problems arise because of homeschooling your child. My personal relationship with homeschooled children and adults was a great amount of knowledge but a far greater lack of social skills as well as many times "common sense". Obviously I have met those who were homeschooled and not characterized this way but a far greater amount were. Let me know what you think. Thanks.
I'm not the one in the video, but the producer of the videos and also a former public school teacher. I've been teaching and meeting lots of homeschool kids and yes some are "different" socially and some seem the sameThe big difference is they are at home more and are influenced more by parents instead of peers which usually makes them more self confident. They might not also be into whatever is "cool" these days.
@homeschoolvideo They also escape the indoctrination that currently haunts the public school system, and may actually learn to think independent reflective thoughts. Oh dear the unions have to stop this!
What concerns ME is the poor social skills of public scchool children. Most are rude, hateful, agressive, inconsiderate and disrespectful. You will not find homeschooled children like that. In fact, HS children have a reputation for being well mannered, polite and courteous since they have not had to learn caged animal survival skills. They also relate well to adults. I have been exposed to hundreds of homeschool families and have never found ANY to lack common sense either!
@lorigamble It's a survival skill. You have to adapt quickly or else the other students will steamroll over you. Personally I don't think having to learn to deal with excessive abuse is not a healthy skill to have to learn.
@Triab66 I've been homeschooled my whole life and am now 16. Trust me when I say that I have met my fair share of "unsocialized" HSchoolers. But the majority of us are every bit if not much more social then most public schooled kids. That I attribute to the wide range of social outlets that I was provided with throughout my schooling. When I was a kid from the age of 3 I was in dance lessons, swim team, homeschool group, and several other social groups. So no, not all of us are unsocial. :)
I believe there are a fair amount of public school children who lack social skills as well. I certainly remember kids like that, & I remember the abuse they endured because of it. Perhaps the reason some of those socially backward children are homeschooled is because they have been or would be ridiculed in the public school system? Perhaps their parents decided to homeschool them because they didn't want their self-image to be defined by fitting in with the crowd in the public school?
@Triab66 I think you hit the nail right on the head. Some children who homeschool are socially inept, while others are not. The same goes for children who attend traditional school. It depends far more on the child's natural personality than the manner in which he is educated.
@Triab66 Wow- your a peice of art- home schooled children lack "common sense", WHAT? Common sense is NOT something that PUBLIC SCHOOL OFFERS OR TEACHES MY CHILDREN! As a parent, that is my job! From the time they are born untill three they learn all the common sense they will keep for life. If children have no common sense, its because they were born with a differant brain that dosn't allow them to function as well as a normal child, or lack of parenting in thier home (like abusive homes).
@Triab66 I worked in the public schools for four years and am now a home-schooling dad, along with my wife. Public school does not exist to socialize children. A family is a childs primary means of socialization. Studies have been done that show home-school children fair better off socially. There are many poorly adjusted children in the public school, however, it is not the school systems fault. They come in with a disposition depending on their family and social environment.
@Triab66 i just hope you know the social skills kids are getting in public schools are pothetic. most kids are mean to eachother perverted and stupid and ignorant. nwo wants that sheep.
@Triab66 - Could it be that your attitude was such that they did not want to socialize with YOU? Personally, I do not like to social with people that think lesser of me before they even know me. Maybe they do not want to be social with you for the same reason?

Lets be real honest , about 75% of homeschoolers are Evangelicals that are overprotecting their kids . They see evil and sin everywhere almost like a phobia .

Lipli - "nope" isn't expressive enough .If you disagree make a point by a counter argument .Or did home schooling hurt you that much .

An ex home schooled kid started attending school at the 6th grade , his parents didn't allow him to watch Sponge Bob or listen to Rock and roll .Parents strict Baptists .
flyingscience 2 years ago
so because you met ONE rotten set of homeschool parents and that must mean ALL homeschoolers are "Evangelicals that are overprotecting their kids" apperently public school didn't do mch for YOU. I'm not saying public schools are bad or anything but by homeschooling the kids learn at a faster pace because they don't have to wait for everyone else to understand what they are learning that day.
lilpinky0880 2 years ago 2
This is ridiculous.i am not a christian and homeschool, not because of religious reason or because we are over protective, but because the schools in our area are not up to par! We do not have TV at all and if we did i still would not let my kids watch spongebob. A little talking sponge running around in his underwear? How stupid is that.We dont have an idiot box because there are so many other things to be done! as for rock n roll..... as long as it isnt vulgar...we listen to all types of music!!
lilacmoon68 2 years ago

Oh man, you must be special! Just like every other child out there....

@lilpinky0880 homeschoolers learn to teach themselves and think for themselves. They are spontaneous and take initiative. Unfortunately public school kids are taught from kindergarten to sit and wait for instructions. So sad. How will they make it through LIFE? I think we would have much better people in our world if it weren't for the oppressive public schools!
lorigamble 8 months ago
Homeschoolers are better socialized because they can be around other people during the school day! There isn't 8 hours that you are stuck with the same 30ish kids! Like me, I can go to my uncles store and help people.
lilpinky0880 2 years ago
yes, the public schools are the perfect place for children to learn what is "cool", what to buy that makes people more "cool", what makes someone "weird" (eg. reading at recess), and the list goes on.... it is all about fitting into mainstream ideas of what to be and no longer about being your unique self.
public schools are the most sheep-creating, unique-spark extinguishing places anyone can go.

I think it's the responsebility of the parents to raise and educate their children on their own. Not to hand it over to a school teacher who has to educate 30 children at the same time.

Staying at home with mom or dad is similar to house arrest or expulsion .Would you have wanted to spend your entire childhood with dear mom .
flyingscience 2 years ago
Yes, I wish I was homeschooled. I had many problems with different schools. Now I'm staying at home for a while. And I don't mind to be with my dear mom cause we have a very good relationship.

I have taught in public schools and I homeschool as well! At least 30 of my homeschooling friends are also former public school teachers! What does this tell you?
DottieBe 3 years ago 7

They might not also be into whatever is "cool" these days.
homeschoolvideo 3 years ago 15
@homeschoolvideo They also escape the indoctrination that currently haunts the public school system, and may actually learn to think independent reflective thoughts. Oh dear the unions have to stop this!

What concerns ME is the poor social skills of public scchool children. Most are rude, hateful, agressive, inconsiderate and disrespectful. You will not find homeschooled children like that. In fact, HS children have a reputation for being well mannered, polite and courteous since they have not had to learn caged animal survival skills. They also relate well to adults. I have been exposed to hundreds of homeschool families and have never found ANY to lack common sense either!
lorigamble 3 years ago 42
@lorigamble Not all public school kids are misbehaved. Alot from my childhood school were very respectful.
BuddleiaChic97 1 year ago
@lorigamble Absolutely! Public school is not the means to socialize a child.
ryanjames731 8 months ago

LindyHoppingMidwife 1 year ago
@Triab66
I believe there are a fair amount of public school children who lack social skills as well. I certainly remember kids like that, & I remember the abuse they endured because of it. Perhaps the reason some of those socially backward children are homeschooled is because they have been or would be ridiculed in the public school system? Perhaps their parents decided to homeschool them because they didn't want their self-image to be defined by fitting in with the crowd in the public school?
legodino970 1 year ago 2
@Triab66 I think you hit the nail right on the head. Some children who homeschool are socially inept, while others are not. The same goes for children who attend traditional school. It depends far more on the child's natural personality than the manner in which he is educated.
reggieboy04 1 year ago
@Triab66 Wow- your a peice of art- home schooled children lack "common sense", WHAT? Common sense is NOT something that PUBLIC SCHOOL OFFERS OR TEACHES MY CHILDREN! As a parent, that is my job! From the time they are born untill three they learn all the common sense they will keep for life. If children have no common sense, its because they were born with a differant brain that dosn't allow them to function as well as a normal child, or lack of parenting in thier home (like abusive homes).
lisagrayz 1 year ago
@Triab66 I worked in the public schools for four years and am now a home-schooling dad, along with my wife. Public school does not exist to socialize children. A family is a childs primary means of socialization. Studies have been done that show home-school children fair better off socially. There are many poorly adjusted children in the public school, however, it is not the school systems fault. They come in with a disposition depending on their family and social environment.
ryanjames731 8 months ago 2
@Triab66 i just hope you know the social skills kids are getting in public schools are pothetic. most kids are mean to eachother perverted and stupid and ignorant. nwo wants that sheep.
CocaineDrRockso 6 months ago 4
@Triab66 - Could it be that your attitude was such that they did not want to socialize with YOU? Personally, I do not like to social with people that think lesser of me before they even know me. Maybe they do not want to be social with you for the same reason?
