Water collects and takes up the steam pipes. The built up water traps areas of steam together under high pressure causing the pipe to burst. It's uncommon it happens to this extent as the Steam network has bleeders through out it where the water can be released.
That's why all over NYC you can see steam coming from drains and man made chimneys to vent of the water and any other overly high pressures.
An old timer steam locomotive engineer would have simply walked right up to the orifice where the steam was ascending from, sat down, and felt right at home.
The steam is pumped under the city because it means that the people of New York can have hot running water without having to rely on boilers. It works in two ways because it means in winter snow melts off the roads and pavements than it would do otherwise :)
@kdc43 oh yeah! Same with the NY Post headline on that day. I think it was called "Midtown Volcano"! BTW I was in Soho when it happened, but I can't really see anything with all the buildings around. When I went home in Flushing, NY. and turned on NY1 was the moment I found out what happened.
@mushidigger OF COURSE! NO SHIT!! One person actually died in this accident! Imagine having extremely highly pressurized steam at 125 Deg. C. shooting at you, I mean you are pretty much sizzled!
Cogeneration. Conventional coal-thermal electric plant: 30% efficient to electricity, 70% waste heat. Cogeneration coal plant - guessing - 20% electricity, 60% steam for building heat, only 20% waste heat.
At Wikipedia it sez -- "Con Edison distributes 30 billion pounds of 350 °F/180 °C steam each year through its seven cogeneration plants to 100,000 buildings in Manhattan—the biggest steam district in the world."
In the summer, the steam runs absorption chillers for air conditioning.
i remember seeing somewhere that it has something to do with steam entering a water main which caused the steam to rapidly cool leaving a void which the water rushed into which somehow caused an explosion. i can't remember what its called though and i'm still not sure on why exactly it occurs
yea it is called water hammer.water hammer is when cold water comes in contact with the pipe causing the steam inside the pipe to condense into water and increase the pressure locally
it happens when a steam bubble travels up a pipe water logged as it condenses it slings a few hundred pounds of water in speeds of 150mph and when it reaches a T or a U joint it can easily break through and shatter through 1/2 thick black steel. cast iron/copper should not be used on steam.
what? do you know what your talking about? first, a water hammer is when you close a valve quickly and because water doesn't compress easily, it sends shock waves through the pipe, second, condensing steam would cause the pressure to decrease. if it was water freezing that would be a different story, but this is a "Steam explosion NYC", so next time don't post something on you tube if your just going to be stupid
@Maverickb LOL I was just looking through all of the replies to my messages over the years and I just came across this gem! Hopefully someday you'll come across this again as well and enjoy the memories.
It has been speculated that this explosion was caused after routine maintenance on that pipe's generation station left excess steam in the pipe after shut down. The steam cooled, condensed, and left a pool in a low spot. When steam was forced through later, it hit the narrower section of the pipe where the water had pooled and as a result, pressure built up behind the pool and forced the pipe to explode.
Many eastern US cities rely on steam from steam generation facilities or local power plants for heating. Because steam rises, as made evidently apparent in the video, it is an excellent method for heating very tall structures.
ok first off, that karletto guy below me isnt funny cuz some people died from it and my brother was there. and second, to the fireball guy, the pipes were made in the 30's. thats why they blew up because they were incredibly old.
If I had to guess, Combined Heathing and Power(CHP).
If a fireplant burns natural gas and generates electricity it will produce ~40% electricity and ~60% heat. That's of course an enormous waste, so if you can use that heat to heat peoples appartments in the winter it's a big win.
"why are there pipes carring high pressure steam beneath roads!!!"
Well thats easy to explain... Imagine a city block surrounded on all 4 sides by city streets. How do you get steam to those buildings with out laying pipes under the streets? You cant its impossiable. Come on use your head alittle. I bet if i goto your country ill see the same thing...
@fireball79058350 Well for starters I can see you're a rude ass brit like most of you and what the hell would you know of are city. 2nd you're comment was not true at all and rude. and 3th con ED does this so we all can have hot water and heat in the winter my good sir.

Ummm... Why is anyone concerned with office building windows breaking, and car windows staying intact?

AGWDanimations 1 year ago
@AGWDanimations Most likely some steam traps failed, which allow condensate (water) to exit the line but the steam does not.
Its not the built up pressure from the water that will burst a line but most likely water hammer due to the condensate over a period of time.
Sometimes over time steam lines just give way due to weakness from wear and tear and improper water treatment
