I was never happy with how they felt when I played them. With some drumsets you just don't "click", I never played as good with these Gretschs or my DWs as I play with my other drumsets.
The bassdrum was also oversized so it was difficult to get heads to seat properly.
I've played other vintage Gretsch sets that have had better feel, to me at least. I'll get one in the future.
These drums sounded great thou and looked amazing.
That is a great looking and sounding kit, I've checked out all of your videos...your playing and taste in gear is awesome, when will you be posting more videos?
Thanks! They're nice drums, they've definately got "the sound".
The drums are miced with two small-diaphragm condenser microphones in a XY -configuration and they're located next to the camera. So about 2 meters from the drumset.
Thanks! When it comes to tuning a snare drum, I don't have any speial tricks. I just tune it so that it sounds good to me. I guess I prefer a medium to medium-tight tension on batter and a little tighter on resonant. Snare wires and how they're set up, play a HUGE role in how the snare drum is going to sound.
cool good to hear, has reinforced what i have been thinking, i think gretsch's dryer mellower feel is my favourite of all drum sounds. im holding out for a 24" round badge, i think that will be my dream bass sound..
It's about from mid 60's. It has a nice mellow attack and medium sustain. I have it at a studio session right now and it works like a charm. The Ludwigs for example have less attack and more sustain and the Sonors have a really strong attack compared to the Gretschs. I guess "punchy" would be the right word to describe the sound of this set.
What a beautiful kit. Shame it didn't suit you. How much did it go for?
