@audaceinfuga no, they're just three midgets and they hate giants especially gentle ones because they've been raped before so now they keep their ass tight
@earthless1990 one of their trademarks was that they gathered more classical and fold influences than other prog bands, and still rocked as hard. dont diss their uniqueness
@pablovandyck: Its cool that you see their music critically!! The whole "That was good music back then, its all so perfect" starts to get annoying :-) Btw, The first two minutes of this song are some my favorite. The violines create such a great mood!
I first encountered the band in 1971 after travelling in Europe> I saw them live in Waterloo, Ontario in '75 or so. Great show. Much of the music does not hold up today, but other tunes remain strong.
i found gentle giant on accident in a box of free records and brought it home and was blown away....... only the cover of my album had the giant holding the band in his hand.... i am not sure why this didn't catch on? why wouldn't it have ? somebody with tie fucked up...
@regalbeagleable The British cover of 'Three Friends' was rejected by Columbia Records because they considered it too strange. The company chose to use the artwork from their self-titled first album (which never made it to the states).
transition at 2:20 makes this song immortal. So much power, swagger, virtuosity. The sax, the bass, the pausing, it's pure genius!! The set up with the light violins, and then POW, one of the most powerful pieces of music I have ever heard. It has always had an evil undercurrent to me since the 1st time i heard it in the late 70's, stoned in a friends bedroom. But I can't help but appreciate the emotions it brings out. Thank you Gentle Giant!!
So True So True....only a hidden worldof us know this. it's such a shame. but it is an acquired taste that took me a minute to acquire. My brain works 'out of the box' so this music and prog was always perfect for my sensibilities. I truly have little time for generic and mainstream taste and style. But loving Giant and Prog in general is often a lonely job
Well bands could exist like this, but not very man genetically healthy people exist right now.
There are people who are being born with this much talent, but they don't connect well in a society that doesn't respect or pay money to anyone who is worth anything.
ahhh, blastin the ole magna planars with the 150 watt marantz with the gyro tuner wheel and the linear tracking turntable, blitzed out of our minds in my buddies room with his mom screaming to turn it down. And us laughing our asses off and turning it up. good times, yep, good times.
I saw these guys in 74-75 and they blew me away, I can't really recall but they backed up Tull and Yes and when they played with Yes, it seemed that the boys(Yes) were a little upstaged.
You're a lucky guy to have seen them in their heyday. I was 15 in 75 and I wasn't allowed to go to concerts till I was 18. Philly spectrum. Believe it or not, the parents thought there may be nefarious activities going on there that would corrupt my developing intellect. Go figure!
I saw this band in 74. A great talent. so many different instruments being played through a song.I was and still am a big fan of theirs. Nobody like GG
I should have added on my previous comment that in the last part they change to jazz style completing the cycle. There was never and I think will never be a band like Gentle Giant. Thye are unique !
This is one of Giant's songs that best exemplifies the virtuosity of their members. The first part of the song is almost classic music to change in the middle to heavy metal style with Derek on vocals and Green on guitar. One of their best songs !
One of GG's great tunes....and yes, metal meisters Krokus quote the heavy riff in their song 'Our Love', coming out of the guitar solo, at about 3:33.
They never got the recognition they deserved. I remember an 80's band "Krokus" ripped of this Peel the Paint riff in one of their songs. Hope GG recieved some royalties for it.
@notToast "Recognition" is what all real musicians strive for. The respect of their peers & fans. What you quoted from wikipedia refers to popularity or "fame". Gary Green was one of my favorite guitar players back in the early 70's, & hell yeah, he deserves recognition, when he was way better than a lot of guitarists at that time. The band deserves recognition for being Prog Rock pioneers. I didn't have to get my info from wikipedia either.....Go learn how to read English...Dumbass!!!
@Rixx5637 Well now you're just kinda putting words in their mouths aren't you? How do you know they wanted recognition? For all you know, maybe they wanted nothing more than to compose their music and play it. Also, I think you might be exaggerating it. They got a lot of respect and admiration from their (admittedly few) fans. They don't deserve some kind of genius award for this though. The history of music has been flooded with musical geniuses. GG write good music. . but dont act like they sh
@notToast If all they wanted to do was "compose their music & play it" They wouldn't have bothered dealing with a record label & all the BS that comes with it, would they? All musicians want to make a living doing what they love, which is Their music.(don't mistake that for fame) They set some pretty high standards for their "time period", but since you're not a musician, (judging from your page) I don't expect you to understand
@Rixx5637 Who made successful independent recordings in the 70s? How did you get it distributed and pressed? That was pretty much totally unheard of unless you were TOTALLY UNHEARD OF.
Hmm. . . we'll I live in Texas. Believe me, progressive rock is something very foreign to some people here. Thank you for your thought. I appreciate it.
Cool post. Great song. Got 'em all from the 70's. They seem like they're just about as popular now - which is pretty amazing. Love the Gary Green solo here. Thanks for posting, capequeel.
You're alright! We're here for ya, buddy! Shoot...borrow a song from one of us anytime!!!I don't know how...but....we'll manage it, somehow, I'm certain!

In the first minutes, who's singing? I don't think it's Derek, his voice sounds too smooth.
stefanobudicin 3 months ago
@stefanobudicin I presume it's Phil, it's too soft to be Derek but not as soft as Kerry.

Yeh but team up the old 901's with a Sansui 9090DB and at half volume would just blow that Marantz away. I broke windows with it!

Damn I forgot about the monster sansui's. They were powerful. The marantz was a good steady tuner though but for power Sansui kicked it's ass.

@Rixx5637 recognition they deserved? what the hell are you talking about?
from wikipedia:
The band's onetime stated aim was to "expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of becoming very unpopular,"
they didn't want any recognition
