The idiots who cry about DRM are simpletons. You can almost any book you want if you bother to look on the net. You can also convert from essentially any format to another using Calibre.
And those of you who don't understand how much better e-ink is to read on vs. the damn tft of the ipad are the most annoying. You're missing the entire point of the product and technology, which is TO EMULATE PAPER.
Looks great and it just to emulate real books, so no backlight and has an e-ink screen, no need for colors. It's just too expensive for me now, for the same price I have a netbook with a free ebook-reader which I can use for everything. Whenever the price drops I might get one, it's a nice device.
The Kindle swindle! DRM restricted. That means that they want to kick my ass hard just because I am buying the books. They may delete my books without alerting me. That sucks. I am not that easily tricked. the contrast isn't very impressive if you compare to other e-book devices. The kindle can't read many formats. that is also not so good. my conclusion is that the kindle is overhyped. buy a better e-book reader. ;) Great review!
All new technology starts out expensive, this is a giant leap to ebook readers. Its the first time ever that something like this is "actually"(In my opinion) comparable to buying an actual book.
Not that there are more and more ebook readers out there, the game has changed completely--Amazon to fix some serious. Have you read some of the problems? Just look on Amazon. It's as great as the advertising says it is. Read the actual reviews.
At last. A reader with a decent-sized screen!. All those tiny 6 and 7-inch readers are useless for real studying(technical documents etc.). This is a very affordable reader for the features it provides. The other large-screen readers(iRex devices) are all WAY more expensive than the DX.
The reason it's nearly $500 is because there are too many nitwits ready and willing to buy everything on credit. I used to be that way too. Ten years ago (1999) I actually paid $250 in advance for a 3Dfx Voodoo3 3500. Now it's worthless. But the debt I created then is still floating around today drawing interest and devaluing the US dollar. Debt is easy to create but impossible to destroy, stop it already.
I have an original Kindle and it will NOT be replaced UNLESS something drastic happens to it.....
The use for the Kindle DX is more geared towards college/university use. Many of the top text book publishers have created text books that can be used with it.....
Matter of fact, Amazon is using it in some universities as a test....Sure beats carrying around tons of books...
I'm a Computer Science major right now, and if Amazon offered student pricing, I would buy it for school... My K1 will do...

I have the original kindle and I love it but for this new model they are going to need to improve the picture quality for it to really catch on with newspaper readers that and increase their choices of what newspapers you can get. And they'll need to lower the price because they are getting near cheap laptop prices @ $480.
Yes. I agree. It is way to expensive. Nonetheless, I wanted it so I purchased it. On top of that, I practically gave away my Sony Reader during the process. In life you decide what is important to you and, no matter the cost, you go for it. I can live with the cost. I am totally please with the purchase.
Looks nice, but the navigation looks a little clunky (he had to keep pressing a button to scroll down line by line) and the screen goes negative when switching pages or viewing angle.
I got a Kindle 2 and at first I thought I'd want a bigger viewing window, but this demo makes me think the DX would be WAY too big to lug around.
If I had the Kindle 2 same size, but the keyboard were touchscreen, THEN I would consider an upgrade, but this demo makes me think the DX can't possibly be worth the 50% price hike.

talk about eye strain, i already wear glasses and this dull, non contrast display would be a huge eye strain in minutes. I'm buying an iPad.

@8aetroya8 : you're an idiot. the kindle's e-ink is just like reading from paper. The iPad is an lcd screen. Guess which causes eyestrain? moron.

Why not spend your $500 on an iPod touch, and use Fictionwise and Stanza apps to view the PDF? The price for this device is ridiculous.!

I sure hope Amazon don't discontinue the pocket sized Kindle 2 in favour of this one. It's far to big.

It's not that expensive, Iphone cost the same and it's good for nothing... this is a really revolutionary product!

@ KNWQA
Irex makes e-ink reader with touch screen but the price is much more expensive. For example,
- 8.1 inch screen - $599
- 10.2 inch screen - $859
If Amazon adds touch screen, the price will go up as well.
elegantsimplicity 2 years ago
still no touch screen???!!! WTF?!?!?!
A thing so expensive!!! MAKE A TOUCH SCREEN!!!

I totally agree. I too own a Kindle 2, and I think this thing is just impractical to hold and read for a long period...

Why is this thing so expensive? The tech is not even as good as the iphone or any windows mobile with touch screen.

e-ink and a portable device is comparing apples to oranges. They are completely different technologies.
dominiricanusa 2 years ago
do u know if theyll come out with colored e-ink? I'm wiating for a colored version so then theyll start making comic books for it.
