I knew Lenny personally for many years and HAVE been out with him for the evening. He was a hysgterical hoot and had everyone around in stiches. And he did NOT give a damn what anyone thought. He DID have a serious side as well, I can assure you of that.
Can someone tell us about his sound? I met a guy here in Columbus Ohio who has one of the first Hammonds, an A model. We went together to go pick up me a Leslie 122 and him a C2. I think we paid $400 for the lot. A happy day. He played me a tape on the way home of this crazy playing and it sounded like an electric guitar. He then told me that it was a Hammond A and that it didn't have fold back, that all of the notes went straight across. I can't remember though if he said it was Lenny or not.
Lenny was a great organist and entertainer; a huge trned setter in the world of popular organ music. He was my idol when I was young and I learned how to ply just like him. We became good friends in 70's and when I visited him in Florida, we would play duets on his instruments at home where I discovered he could play some great jazz also. We also spent time together at Bradley"s Barn in Nashville while he was recording. Lenny was even funnier off the stage, if you can believe that.
This old dude looks like so much fun you know he'd be AWESOME to go out and have a few drinks with! I love how he's having a blast and doesn't give a damn what you think or not...haha
Ah, Nashville Now. What a great show it was. TNN was one channel My folks, sister & I would all set down to watch. Anyway, how awesome to hear Lenny :)
What a great cover version of "Folsom prison blues" No I am not Lenny in discuise just a huge fan . did you guys know that all of his (I believe) 52 albums are all on the same label?? Decca/MCA affilliates he was and still is the best organ player. Hey write me you Lenny dee fans!!
I met Lenny in 1967 at his Dolphin Den in Florida still have a picture of him playing the Hammond X 66 just weeks after he bought it! He was a truly great gentleman! I am glad I met him!
I have been a Lenny Dee fan of his music since "plantation Boogy"..about high school age!(NOW 67) I was unable to find anything as to if he is still living.I was in Fl and asked around...no one heard of him. I have at least 5..6 of his 331/3 and still play them quite ofton. The X-66 was quite a box!!A fella named BILLY ANDERSON had one in Rockford ill and played it nightly at the HOFFMAN HOUSE.
Lenny Dee and Pete Fountain in the same room? That's paradoxical... too bad they never cut an album together (although I guess their styles wouldn't jive).
Damn good since 1953 that I remeber. epadony changed diapers yett?
