  • I think getting out that far is a bit rough a little bit tougher as the player can move you back quicker, though I might just like my 3 feet out of the crease rule down here in TX, so no one teaching that down in the south here.

  • Dont criticize one of the greatest goalies to ever play the game of hockey, lets see you get anywhere near where he got.

  • do any of your videos show NHL goalies making proper plays to "teach" to the "boys and girls" you keep mentioning in your vids? Have you thought professionals? You show what not to do, what about proper plays? You do realize there is no perfect "style" correct? If they never made errors most NHL games would end in an infinite tie.

  • @eDAWGBrantford You can't learn from video? What do you think most pro video sessions consist of? Watching all the good things they have do all the time. Or do they have some video to point out the bad stuff to learn from?

This video is a teaching tool.

Not "errors", they are technical mistakes that repeat.

  • Wow imagine how many more stanley cup rings and record blowouts he would have had if he had been tought by you? Martty you must really suck letting a breakaway goal in.

  • you hear something different from many people, I have seen many intructional videos that state the goalie should only come out approx 4 ft in front of the "paint". Is this simple brodeur bashing or fact? You mention children learning in your video but the majority of goalie kids would never be able to match the incoming speed of the player skating backwards in full goalie gear if they started from the hash marks, how ridiculous

  • Dude, I dont think you realize marty is NOT a butterfly goalie....PLUS Im pritty damn sure he knows how to play.

  • dude if u think u can do better why dont u play in the NHL

  • @omarkole If you think you know more than me why aren't you in the NHL?

  • @TheGoalieGuru no its that u dont no what ur talking about

  • @omarkole So tell me why I don't know what I am talking about! I think this video is pretty clear and correct!

  • @TheGoalieGuru no how can a goalie move backwards at the same speed as a offensive player moving forwards, defense men cant even do that let alone a goalie

im not like some of the people her that r like yelling at u, im just trying to prove my point

  • no goalie can skate as fast backwards as a player can forwards. most d-men can't even do that. your an idiot.

  • @ZJC92 Most D man can't skate as fast as forwards? AHH, AHAHAHAHAHAH, AHAHAHAHAHAH!

THE DUMBEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD!

Really! THE DUMBEST!!! ACTUALLY SAYING "your dumb" instead of YOU'RE dumb is pretty dumb!

  • @TheGoalieGuru I didn't say your dumb. and yah no d-man can do that. I play D1 high school and we were 3rd in the state last year. let me know when you find someone and i will skate circles around them.

  • @ZJC922 So you get breakaways EVERY SINGLE TIME you are on the ice?

  • Hashmarks is alittle far.. You need to get out there but there's no set spot to get out to. Each play dictates how far you need to come out and how fast you need to get back. Brodeur can't get back as fast as some other goalies so it only makes sense not to challenge so far out. He's alittle deep on this one but it's Brodeur.. I think he earned a bad habit or two..

  • @scarred4life1 Yes there is a set spot to get out to! It's about momentum, gap control, speed, taking most of the net away, angles, etc. Why is Brodeur average on shootouts?

  • hes right it works almost everytime

  • Brodeur ranks 18th place on the list for active goalies for shootouts!!!

    18th!!!!!!!

  • Hey buddy u havent got a clue.... come out to the hash marks? what if the guy goes left or right? then u have about 7 feet to move to get centered in a second. good luck! ur the best goalieguru... are u chuck norris

  • Matthieu Garon stopped 94% to lead the league in shootout save percentage by a mile!!!

And guess what, he comes out to the hash marks every time!!

Thank you, you are way off,

    Chuck Norris

    AKA Goalie Guru

  • You claim to be such an expert on goaltending, yet most of the stuff that comes out of your mouth is nonsense. You dont appear to have any real knowledge of the position. You say you teach young goaltenders, well where at, who are you? Have any of them gone on to play anywhere? The answer is undoubtedly no. And why do you think you know more about the position then NHL goaltenders? Brodeur takes away most of the net, and knows where he can be scored on and reacts accordingly, watch you'll see.

  • wow..if ur so good, how come your not in the NHL ? F*UCK YOU, every golie has there own style

  • That's the problem! They have yheir own styles but no NHL goalie has the balls to admit some techniques are better than others and piece together THE BEST STYLE!

All golfers are trying to hit like Tiger! All pitchers have similar styles! All quarterbacks have similar styles! All batters have similar styles!

There is always a CORRECT way and a WRONG way!

  • Hooray!!-someone knows GOALTENDING rfraser08!! yes you TIME the skater and eliminate all angles if you want him to deke. If you want the player to shoot as you mentioned, you still have to come out to get the player get in the vicinity enough that he has very little to shoot at and you can ANTICIPATE where he's aiming.

  • 2. Some goalies choose not to challenge as far out to provoke a shot rather than a deke. This may be because the feel more confident taking shots rather than facing dekes. If a learning goalies isn't as strong a skater as the player comign down on him, and he's out at the hash marks, the player can easily skate around the goalie

  • That is called DEVELOPMENT for 'learning' goalies!

Amateur sport (learning) isn't about winning! So what if the player skates around him. It is better to learn now than get BEAT AND EMBARRASSED like LUONGO in the show!!!

Kids TRUST me!!! Build your 'confidence' as rfraser08 sais!

  • 1. you say goalie's should back up at the "Same Speed" as the player. If goalies were to do that, unless they were a foot away from the player when the started backing up, which they never are, they would be in the net by the time the player reaches the crease. They need to back up at a speed RELEVANT to the player's (at a fraction of their speed) but not at the same speed.

  • Same speed is CORRECT! If the goalie waits at the hash marks until the player is 4-6 feet and moves at the same speed he is covering 100 % of the net and there is NOTHING to shoot at. As the play gets closer to the net then the goalie judges the speed accordingly. So you are partially correct!

I can't give away all my secrets! Otherwise who would need the Goalie Guru!!!

  • No one needs the goalie guru now!

You're not saying anything that isn't known by professional goaltenders and coaches.

well... besides all the things you have, like backing up at the same speed. By doing so you give up your chance at forcing the player to make a move they're not comfortable with.

  • Good points. Another point of view never hurt anyone except those who don't want to improve.

Remember they laughed at Galileo and the Wright Brothers and while your Goalie analysis is hardly at the same level - it is important for people to look at various points of view to discover a better way.

I'm sure they laughed at the butterfly when they first started it.

  • Thanks!

It is very interesting that people have this notion that only the NHL goalies know anything about goaltending.

I have studied this position for 25 years and I have no reason to pick on Brodeur. I have no hard feelings towards him!

I just use him and Luongo to show people they make mistakes too.

  • JohnCarbz&SenseOfReason-you guys honestly think we're the same person? SenseOfReason-you have not mentioned one good point ABOUT THE POSITION OF GOALTENDING!-NOT STATS my 7yr old nephew can tell me who's leading the league thats why you don't know anything about this position. He has raised VALID points that the naked amateur/Fan can't see!! I played Pro in Europe and it's hilarious to hear people like you talk about the position. I'm not making fun of you but it's wayyyyyyyy over your head!wow

  • Don't respon to goalgeez like it is somebody else with the same ridiculous opinion as TheGoalieGuru, it is the same guy that made another name to help defend himself, once again proving my point that he needs to do something productive with his life.

  • Wow, you should work for the FBI!

It is 100% impossible that there are people out there that believe what I believe! It has to be me defending myself twice!

Why would I have to do that when I stand up for myself and argue my points?

Not every body thinks I am crazy like you. I ahve 26 subscriptions which none of them argue with me so what does that tell you!

Hey Goalgeez, stop agreeing with what I say. You have to think what JohnCarbz thinks and believes!

  • 26! Man you are an internet superstar!

I'd be willing to be a solid chunk of change that most of those are for sheer entertainment. (aka, they find what you say to be absolutely hilarious)

Considering your views/subscriptions ratio however, one can be pretty certain that /most/ people who watch these vids actually do think you're crazy.

  • a Senseof Reason-you know soo much about goaltending....Brian Burke knows goaltending??....his Goalie coach does. You see this is what I'm talking about...If you even think for a minute that the GM's know the POSITION of Goaltending I repeat the POSITION... this just shows me and Guru you know nothing about it. No offence.

  • Hey Goalgeez, read what JohnCarbz said above!

Hey Goalgeez, stop agreeing with what I say. You have to think what JohnCarbz thinks and believes!

  • Tell me why Brodeur would be a finalist for the Hart Trophy three times.

Explain how an average goaltender gets a finalist vote for Hart trophy as league MVP three times.

Explain to me how he won the Calder for league's top rookie if he's average. Did his team win that for him?

How about the Vezina award. League MVP as voted on by the General Managers. Brodeur has been nominated times! Why would the GMs consider him to be an MVP if he's average? Most all of them are former players!

  • GM's are ex goalies that could teach goalies all the technical aspects of the game!

GM's know what to look for in a good goalie, the tehniques, positioning, stance, balance, etc.

What do you think Brian Burke knows about goalending?

  • Enough to get paid millions as a GM and build a team (you know the GM is responsible for the roster, including the goalies, right?)

I'd say he probably knows enough considering he built a team that won the Stanley Cup, and been to the finals twice. Considering he hired goalie coach François Allaire, who trained Giguere to be one of the premier goalies in the league.I mean Allaire only mentored Patrick Roy, what does he know?

I'd say he knows a fair bit about how good a goaltender is.

  • I said what does Burke know not Allaire!

    Wow!

  • Burke knows enough to hire him.

    you're unbelievable.

  • So you admit Burke doesn't know goalies! His goalie coach does!

    Thank you!

  • I have no idea what he knows about goaltending.

The fact of the mater is, neither do you.

  • Can you explain then, if he can't stop breakaways, why does he have the second highest amount of saves in the shootout, and 6th all time in save percentage among goaltenders with 15 shootout wins or more ? (Side note: Luongo is 5th)

I guess it's his great team defense that prevents shooters from getting quality chances during the shootouts, or he must be really lucky and the shooters just quiver in fear and can't get a decent shot off when they're facing him?

    or what? Answer that!

  • sorry I meant 20 shootouts played in or more, my bad

  • I agree that Brodeur is not good anymore, but he played before in a time when you didn't need all that technically sound stuff to be a good goalie and I praise him for getting the job done nowadays without it because he can't just change his style of play. Once again, I still think you need to do something with your free time.

  • Brodeur's TEAM gave up the fewest shots in the last 14 years combined.

Do you honestly, ok, HONESTLY, HONESTLY, think that has no bearing on his wins and shutouts?

His team from 1994 -2004 averaged 23 shots against. The worst team from each year averaged 33 against.

Do you HONESTLY think that giving up 10 fewer shots has no bearing on his stats? If he faced 33 a night instead of the 23 he faced, does he have the same wins and shutouts?

  • By the way, Don't tell me what to do kid!

    I

  • Please, ok, PLEASE, PLEASE tell me where I told you what to do? I expressed my opinion that I think you need to do something with your free time, you have the option to take my advice or not.

I have always said I don't think Brodeur is the best, I do not know why you gave me those stats it had nothing to do with what I said.

  • You said "I think you need to do something with your free time" look above!

Enjoy the advanced help the videos give you instead of telling me what to do!

  • Please explain then, how in 1998, when Hasek won the vezina, and was among the league leaders in every category, including wins and shutouts, the Buffalo Sabres allowed more shots per game than any other team?

I think that contradicts what your saying and very clearly shows that shots per game have little to do with scoring chances and show that goaltenders have a significant impact on a team's performance.

  • Explanation...

Hasek is better than Brodeur because he stopped more shots but not necessarily quality shots!

    That was easy!

  • No, no.

You said that a goalie on a bad team can't put up numbers like a goalie on a good team. I just proved you wrong.

Do you honestly think a goaltender can get the Hart trophy as most valuable player in the entire league as voted by his peers if he never made a significant impact on the performance of the team?

Brodeur has been a Hart Finalist 3 times! That means his peers think he's was at least one of the top three players in the league that year, bar none!

  • I never said a goalie on a bad team can't put up good numbers. I said Brodeur can't!

    Brodeur, 23 shot average against!

    League average 29!

    League worst 33!

    Brodeur over rated!

Do you get what I am saying here? Over rated! Not awful, not terrible, just average, a goalie on a good team!

What is so hard to accept?

  • Because an average goalie on a great team still doesn't put up those numbers.

Chris Osgood is a prime example of that.

  • dose this guy have something against Marty or something?

  • There's a REASON why Brodeur won the Vezina Trophy! He's a f***ing good goalie!

This is ONE GOAL out of many shots!

No goalie is perfect and is able to save every shot on them!

  • I have hundreds like this! His team won the Vezina! Would he win the Vezina if he played for Los Angeles that last 14 years? NO!

  • Yeah I mean it's not like Hasek won a Vezina when he played for Buffalo!

    He won five..

  • Playing a breakaway out at the hashmarks is something that hasn't been taught at goalie schools for a very long time...half way between crease and hashmark is usually the optimal depth you want to take when approaching a breakaway. Challenging all the way to the hashmarks is useles, half way gives you just as much momentum needed and challegning that far out complicates the save process. Watch any shootout in the NHL, you'll see almost all of them take the halfway approach

  • There is no room for improvement MoDiggence?

    Brodeur is perfect?

    No flaws in his game?

    Come on!

    The Goalie Guru

  • I totally disagree with what you're saying. There is more than just the one way to play a breakaway, contrary to what you claim. It's all about what works for the individual goaltender, Brodeur has proven that the way he plays net is working, so who are you to judge?

  • If Brodeur would have done what you have said here, GoalieGuru, then he would have had a much higher save percentage tho. Yes Brodeur did get flat footed and yes he did dive when if he had momentum could have easily butterfly slided over to his right side and close off any holes and make the save. Good observation Guru, now all you need is that cheque!!! LOL

  • On this goal, I do agree with you goalieguru. Except for the fact that Martin Brodeur doesn't play your typical one move goalie. He is not stuck in butterfly goaltending like you think every goalie should do. Yes he definently plays this one wrong, he should have challenged out more to get the momentum going... and yes he shouldn't have "flailed" like he did, but you also have to take in the fact that he just played a 60 minute game with overtime and also made the save on the first shooter.
