  • that sleeves are just pressed on ? just asking because i dont know anything about sleeving blocks.

  • What kind of sleeves are those? Won''t it be a pain in the ass getting it aligned during installation? I believe Darton sleeves requires custom drilling for the wrist pin hole for EJ257 applications so it makes the installation part easier and virtually eliminates the alignment part.

  • why you didn't "ate" the whole stock cylinder sleeve???

  • jhon, after this hole prosess can you also O-ring the sleeves ? if you dont mind me asking what would the hole work cost me?

  • awsome work man

  • these longer videos are very good, id love to see even more of these longer more in depth vids. thanks john! great work

  • I liked the part with the torque plate to get everything straight, and very good explanation!

  • How much can one expect to pay for sleeving a subaru block? I've got an EJ22e stroker that had a stock bore and an oil pump bypass malfunction took out the crank and mains. Engine is being checked now but the machinist didn't seem optimistic. IF the bores are worn (which I'm hoping is not the case, the engine ran for 2 hours) I'd be either buying new pistons from wiseco or putting sleeves in. Thanks!

  • hey Costa Mesa machine shop when are you going to upload a video about converting a 454 chevy big block two bolt main block into a four bolt main block would like to see all the machine work that has to been done to it please

  • Have you ever done a sleeve job on an aluminum 3.7 Liter Mercruiser block? I am really impressed with the width of your sleeves. This motor was Mercruiser's great new idea and it wasn't. It's and aluminum block with an open deck design and a Ford cast iron 460 head on it. Its a terror on head gaskets.

  • how did you find the axis for the block did you use edge finder or some gauge block

  • I have a question that a lot of people argue about. What should be done first, boring, decking, or align honing?

I have a .020 ford v8 that was bored/honed using modern machinery that aligns itself from the mains. I am wanting to zero deck and align hone now as well for a quality engine build.

Do I need to align hone, zero deck, and re-bore .030 over?

  • @halohadel us you decking then boring then honing

  • is the subaru engine already sleeved ? or did you bore it to accommodate one?

  • you look just like Rpeek

  • intresting how it all goes togeather i am contemplating bringing back to life a motor sleeving is my only option motor has rare numbers otherwise it would be scrap lol

  • 4:41 what was that sound???

  • how much power you this block take now. and why didnt you start with a closed deck block.

    thanks jake

  • EJ257 are widely available and plenty strong enough for very high HP. With sleeves the EJ257 can handle 800hp or more with the right parts of course.

  • So u actually bore out the original block and have the sleeves put in? whats the entire process actually?

p.s I couldn't wait around to watch the whole video!

  • how much would you guys charge to bore and hone a vq35de 6 cyl?

  • @kansasoutcast1 - $225

  • How much wouldd it be to have a sr20de have new sleeves put in?

  • isso c xama kamisa d cilindro nao manga ;(

  • would it not be better to resurface before the honing process? Then deck and sleeve height would be totally equal so the torque plate wont squeeze the sleeves more/less under the honing process.

Just what i had in mind but you probably know more than me :)

  • @86Ivar I thought the same thing. If you resurface after the honing with the torque plate it would give a different result when you torque down the cylinderheads.

  • Yep.. I think I would actually make the drive down to so-cal for this level of "care" put into machining. Nothing like taking a little pride in your work to boost quality.

  • damn this dudes the man!

  • Jon, wouldn't you deck the block first before you bore the sleeves? By changing the surface after you had the torque plate on wouldn't that change how much force the heads would be applying? Or is the change not going to be noticed ?

  • what is the purpose of the sleeves? i know... is more power, but how?

  • it is very important if you are going to boost the engine. Stock sleeves wont hold too much boost!

  • These videos are fantastic, your a very clever guy John!

  • how much is this thing out of square in mm?? 0,05mm??

  • actualy 0.025 i think

  • Yea, James should be just about happy when he gets it back. Especially since its been down for awhile I'm sure he'll have that little kid Christmas grin on his face for a few weeks. lol

  • Amazing attention to detail. I doubt many places are operating to this standard.

  • i doubt they record themselves on youtube either

  • @StevenJamesJ I've worked with one place as good as this. Mulders Auto Machine here in Boise. 1 man shop, clean as a whistle. Knows his stuff. a great deal of the motors that run at Meridian Speedway use and win with his engines.

  • Subaru engines are so simple, clean and have the lowest C.O.G. and sound SO FRIGIN NICE!!!!!

  • That's my good friend's block. This video is of his block. It was just shipped out last week from Costa Mesa R&D. Good luck James. IT should hold LOTS of BOOST now. You still should get something bigger than that puny 35R. HAHA

  • You rock John!

  • here is a guy that I would trust for machine work. amazing work john! 5 stars

  • @1skiinIan how do you know he is a good machinist

  • love your vidz.good info.

  • sweet work on that block.

  • Absolute Genius John!! : O

  • vary, VARY, nice work!
