Marcus' drummer, Poogie Bell, is the freaking man. I have a show coming up at the Hard Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh on March 2nd and Poogie is our drummer for it. I saw him play in person for the first time back in September and his energy amazed me. And the dude just doesn't stop smiling.
It's not about skill or talent, it's about soul. If you're heart isn't in it neither will your body and likewise your sound. This man feels it and plays it as his heart sees it. Bass is just an extension of the mind and body... this is how he speaks and he has learned the language quite well.
@AlpineNInfinity ... easy folks ... it's music .. it not yours or mine ... its ours to enjoy or not. As for the musicians .. well mentioning flea in the same sentence with Marcus is ... lemme see, how can I put this so most of you will get it ... ummm ... lol ... kinda like remaining silent and being thought a fool vs. speaking up and removing all doubt. Don't get me wrong, Flea and his band RHCP are extremely talented and successful musician/performers. Enjoy who you will .. but keep it real
@leonoff89 These Flea fanboys make me sad deep within my heart when I see their "Know it all yet getting it completely wrong" comments on every single bass video on youtube.
@Storhonta I agree you can't compare what they do because their bags are different. I disagree that Marcus is more laid back, different styles. He CAN be, but goodness in terms of command of the instrument, there's no comparison. But fortunately, it's not about that anyway. Flea will never be Marcus and vice versa, but from just pure ability, Marcus is the stronger player, and that's fine, too. Flea probably wouldn't disagree.
Flea is awesome. But he just plays a fat basic groove on the RHCP version whereas Marcus is playing the vocal melody so, you can't really compare versions. Flea and Marcus are both awesome in their respective fields so all you guys criticising and running either player down, let's see you on the Bassist Hall of Fame first. Cunts.
Unbelievable how few are mentioning the actual writer of this song and that is Stevie Wonder!! So judge Marcus Miller by Stevie's version not the RHCP version if you are going to! Jeezz
Gosh, that drummer is a beast. Mr. Miller isn't bad himself, but one thing I'll criticize is that solo he started at around 6:00. I think we've all seen better.
@EliYBY i have to agree, it was weird even before i saw your comment i was like 'holy shit! i think he actually made a mistake...' he redeemed himself with a really strong finish tho. gotta love the guy its like he realized he could do better and so really made it count at the end ! :)
You dont need any credentials when you can sell out any concert hall anywhere on earth...the chilli peppers are as big as it gets and Flea is a badass bassist
@wakomaniac45 I strongly disagree with this. Ability and taste/appreciation are too very different things. One does not have to be a master musician to hold an opinion of one. This is very important to remember when considering personal artistic development, else we'd all be virtuoso clones of Marcus, Jaco, Victor, Jimi, Stevie etc.
@hammzbone Marcus plays clarinet. A lot of clarinet. He recorded some clarinet on his last album: Marcus. He also played and composed for Miles, has written many film scores, was the bass player for Luther Vandross and David Sanborn, and was a part of SMV: Thunder, the most impressive demonstration of what bass is as an instrument. Flea plays for the Chili Peppers.
I'm going to disagree and say that marcus miller can play funk, and does play funk. In fact, I would say that higher ground has more of a funk basis than a jazz base
Hello, bass players. i have been searching the internet for a cheap and decent upright bass. i came across one called the Florea Midnight Bass Outfit(3/4 size black). if anyone could give me some feedback on it, i would greatly appreciate it. thanks.
flea is a rock/punk rock bassist who happens to like funk. I watched an interview with him like a week ago where he said that he likes funk, but he wants to take something funky and turn it into a punk rock sound.
And Marcus has his very own style that his fans are able to recognize right away. And I love it
Also for your information, there is a song by Victor Wooten, called Bass Tribute. You might wanna check it out and listen closely. Basically Vic lists all the best bassists in the world and gives a brief example of their style afterwards.
thats because you cant do it you hateful asshole, it takes skill somthing you probably dont have. i bet your great at having sex with your little sister though
comparing flea to MM is stupid. It's like comparing football to basketball. You can't say if Michael Jordan is better than Roberto Carlos but they both use a ball to play =]
