  • the backflip is an illegal move in figure skating. this basically means that if you do it you are heavily penalized and even disqualified. so yes, lots of people can actually do the move, but dont because of the fact that its not allowed.

  • @KloverKitty this is actually wrong, Surya is the only woman able to do it on 1 leg and u can count on 1 hand men that can do it. But there are a lot than can do it on 2 legs

  • i cant imagine how the ijs will value the backflip as a transition into a 3sal.

  • @trojanrob24 to be honest, i dont even think they would consider it as a difficult entry, just because its so dangerous to try a back flip at all, let alone land it on one foot and then do a triple sal off the ride out

this kind of stuff is reserved for shows essentially, otherwise we'd be giving the poor judges heart attacks

  • She is the best figure scater EVER! Fabulous!

  • バックフリップしてすぐジャンプとんでらwwすごっ

  • She is the ONLY skater male or female that can do this and land on one foot. But then to continue to do a double or triple (can't quite tell) salchow...now that is an athlete!! I miss watching you Surya!

  • The move is now banned. hahhaha

  • Hope to see Surya on Battle of the Blades.

Wik questions that Surya is the only person to have landed that jump one one foot. I have never seen anyone else do it. And this was great!

  • This is a movement which almost all skaters can do. Scott Hamilton also did in some competition. Surya is the only one who can make one-foot landing. It's not allowed in Olympic, because of the high risk of injury. I saw a Disney ice show when all the background skaters were doing this flip in rows. But I don't remember seeing anyone else make it one-foot landing like her. That's why she is so awesome! Her last competition was in Olympic 1998 and she DID it there regardless of the deduction!

  • holy crap

  • @masterfigo

It's Philippe Candeloro but with 2 feet reception

  • Amazing, she is a genius.

  • it would be cool if she did like a air guitar move when she did this back flip

  • I feel now and did in the 90's (im not the only one, either) that she got a rotten deal. Judges value stiff finger positioning and fluttery little girl movement more than a powerhouse athlete who skates like chilled Martha Graham. I adore S.B.

  • how come this generation figure skaters never do this anymore ?

  • i dunno. some said this is band. some say this move is dangerous...

  • umm like every other fucking skating move like tripple spins ans shit....im pretty sure u can shatter your ankle or fall and be paralized.. its a competition. duh lol

  • I'm pretty sure it was banned in competition a while ago. I think I remember Bonaly doing this during some particular competition as an act of defiance.

  • Because she is the only one in the world who can do it.

  • Scott Hamilton does it, DUH.

  • She lands on one foot.

Nobody else lands on one foot.

  • ive seen quite a few videos here on youtube of others doing backflips on the ice

  • @ lillie87

How many landed on one foot?

    That is the difference

  • YES!!! You took my comment!!! LOLOLOL!!

  • @doliveij

there was a long haired french guy who performed the back flip as well if i remember correctly... And if I'm right he was kinda Surya's mentor

  • it was banned from comps cuz its too dangerous.

  • @hostilityy After she backfliped in competition the ISU made it against the rules

  • hey there! Nice backflip! I am a figure skater and I'm trying to do a backflip on the ice..... Could you tell me how you trained into this?? did you use a harness? I can do them on the ground... and am a junior level skater..... but need a backflip! any advice?!?! Thanks!

    -andewithane

  • its not a very common jump to be learned anymore, however it can still be taught. when i was trying to learn it my coach had me practice off-ice first. as for equipment on ice: two pair guys and two wet towels(one on each side)... btw when you say junior i hope you're talking about the kind that can do triples and skate full time in competitive club/academy

  • She is absolutely MY favorite figure skater of that caliber. She never stops amazing her fans and it makes your heart stop at the very moment she does her trademark backflip.

  • She's also a gymnist, which gives her such amazing strength and blance. She the only figure skater I know that can do a full forward flip and land on one blade. Very talented and very beautiful indeed. Too bad about that PETA thing though.

  • that shows a great strength of edges, thats really amazing and she must have a lot of physical strength to not double foot before going into the slachow. WOW!!!

  • isn't this the one she got dq for ??

  • Of all of the back flips I've seen her do, this is the best. It flowed really well.

  • I can't remember the event, but she did a back flip/triple salchow/triple toe loop. That is some AMAZING strength.

  • too loud!

  • Awesome

  • that was beautifulllll

  • yeah, how can you do 2 jumps so to say, in a row?! (I'm really bad at the terms ;))

I always remember her as brave, because of doing flips. cool skater!! :D

  • I read somewhere that she was into gymnastics before moving to figure skating so that may have influenced her perfomance and was able to do that backflip.

  • shes like the onlly woman who can do that:]

  • its a triple salchow.. :)

  • Shes the best ever!

  • shes good

  • ....wait! Did she do a tripple after the back flip? Holy shit!

  • OMG she is SO GREAT! OMG

even after the backflip she goes for does an triple axel...or that spinWOW

does anyone know if she is the only female to backflip?

  • yeah and land with one leg

  • @sayomsskiver No ive seen Kimmie Meissner from the US do a backflip, as well as Sasha Cohen

  • I think she was the only female who did backflip. BTW it's not triple axel,it is a triple salcow, isn't it? But no female could do that! Great performance.

  • no ive seen another do a backflip (female) but not landing one foot and doing a triple salchow (yeah i think it is)! She's awesome!!!

  • @mgvwolf Double axel.

  • @RustDemon79 what? that wasnt a double axel.... triple sal im pretty sure.... a little hard to tell exactly how many revs but def no forward take off.....

  • @arose18458 It was a double sal. I remember this very well. She landed back flip-triple sal during 2000

  • @mgvwolf She did a triple Salchow.

  • @mgvwolf it's illegal so....i wish it wasnt though we wudve seen many e.g kim yuna do it !!

  • @kawaiiushii i dont think that kim yuna could do a backflip, she has doesnt have the muscled legs, but she is indeed a perfection in skating

  • cool xd

  • to jest SUPER... The BEST

  • Surya tttotally rocks.

  • yeah well, she knew in the 1998 olympics that she wasn't going to get a medal anyway, so she decided to "make history"

  • Wow!! really nice !!! :O omg

  • Im no fan of her's, her basic skating is just terrible, but the back flip into a triple-salchow is hot!

  • coz u might jus flipped it wrong and die~ it's for the skater's safety really~ the committee does not want to be held responsible should any acident happens.

  • Why is it illegal?

  • yeah it's illegal and she got really low marks when she did tt in the 1998 olympics.. but she's still the only skater in the world who successfully landed a backflip on one blade in skating history

  • I'm afraid to even try, besides I believe it's an illegal move, as in you can't do it in major competitions.

  • i <3 surya!

  • saucy..
