  • The big explanation missing in this video is the drive that they shocked was not rated to take that kinda abuse. It was a personal hard drive that one of the journalist had brought with them and ioSafe convinced he/she to let them use it. The one that they build to withstand the electric shock made it thru the test with flying colors. Just thought you should know.

  • @ArticBeatle This didn't happen at the demo that we were at. There was only one drive subjected to the shock of the Telsa coil, and it was the ioSafe one. The demo we attended was the 9th one they had done at CES. They told us that out of those 9 drives, 3 had to be opened up and repaired in some way, but the data on all 9 was eventually recovered.

  • @TheVerge There is something that's not clear in this edit, however. After the first Telsa coil treatment, one of the other journalists asked if they could shock the drive again so that he could get the shot he needed. So the drive was subjected to twice the amount of torture than originally planned. We weren't rolling camera during this, unfortunately.

  • Indeed it's more likely that you drop your drive than be DRIVEN OVER by a truck. I want to know if it can withstand IMPACTS, as they haven't been able to do that so far. What they're telling here... is really not going to happen to anyone at home enviroment, you all know that aswell.

  • TAKE MY MONEY

  • What happens if you drop it? Because all the drives i've dropped were destroyed instantly. I would be more impressed if it survived that.

  • @mscocorosie This contains several SSDs inside instead of traditional mechanical spinning drive, and most SSD can withstand around 1000 - 2000 gForce, that's like... i don't know... dropping it from 100 feet (i'm guessing)

  • well dont save any data on this that you will want to get rid of one day!

  • @bobwatters just delete the data...

  • That's honestly very good that the only thing that broke was the controller and not the actual memory.

  • It didn't fail people. The data was still recoverable via a replacement board. I think the fact it stood 1million volts for over 10 seconds is impresssove and the fact its water proof and truck proof is outstanding!

  • awesome :)

  • Come on this isn't a fail, it worked. That's what's important.

  • I would like to see this thing in BlendTec Bledner.

  • Props to the CEO who isn't afraid to get the tools and know his way around the products that he represent, might not be the best demo, but the data in the drive was still recoverable, so that is all that counts! Bravo!

  • 1 dislike ur a bitch

  • I wouldn't say fail at all, duder totally got it up and running no problem, knew just what was up! Great stuff!

  • but will it blend?

  • Wow, so embarrassing.

  • honesty, even though the demo was a fail, I still want to buy one of their drives now.

  • Electricity travels along the surface of an object.

  • Jeez, fucking rugged drive. You pair that with one of those tough books, and give em to some military guys - that's how to transport data in Afghanistan.

  • FAIL or NO FAIL it was one hell of a demo! props just for attempting it.

  • I hate seeing things like this fail. Pretty awesome drive though.

  • Either way it's a great hard drive, who can expect anything to survive something like that?!

  • LOL, can someone say fail?

  • you can use it while getting hit by lightning? not really!

  • Felt bad for the CEO..

  • Who invited Dr.Freeze
