Not sure you were listening. He is for a women's right to choose to have a midwife. Why does that make you sick? Shouldn't a women be able to have a child in anyway they choose? What makes me sick are people who infringe on the rights of others.
Thank you for supporting what should under normal circumstances be viewed as a "natural" event versus a "medical" event.
I had no idea that utilizing a midwife was illegal in your state - and it's a good thing I don't live there! Wow...
As a woman who chose to have my 3rd baby naturally at home, I can say it was the most amazing experience in my life - and I wouldn't do it any other way.
I was shocked to discover midwives were illegal in Missouri 7 yrs ago when I conceived my son. I really wanted to have the experience of a home birth however, I did need to have a medically managed pregnancy and I had a wonderful physician. Moms care about their babies. They will choose the best option for the best outcome. Midwives are trained to know when to seek physician or hospital assistance. Thank you Senator Loudon for bringing reason back to the equation.
Way to go Senator Loudon! Amazing that family rights could be so contentious. For some facts on homebirth see the British Medical Journal, US population: got to world wide web bmj dot com and search homebirth 2000.
Also, skip the NYT article on c-section and read this review of the story with gobs of well-researched note by the author of The Thinking Woman's Guide to Childbirth: on the world wide web at mothering dot com search Henci Goer, A deconstruction.
We do thank God for modern medicine when it's needed but what about when it's not? Check your statistics on fetal & maternal deaths- the USA ranks VERY poorly in the modernized world in these cases. It's sad.
I am not worried about lay midwives, but I am tired or hearing how physicians are all about profit and not about caring for folks. There is a great story in the New Yorker about modern birthing that I think is very fair. I cant link to it here, But do a Google search for:
There are many doctors who do care for the actual mother & baby. In fact, I would venture to assume that most go into the field because they care. But when you turn it into a competitive issue with one against the other, that's when it becomes unfair.
48 years of injustice and oppression started to end on Friday with the passage of the language that makes some midwives in Missouri legal. Now many home birth families can find a midwife who can come to their homes. If such skills are necessary, there will be someone who can manage a hemorrhage or to resuscitate a baby. In 1959, my profession arrogantly took over the profession of midwifery. I am so glad to have lived long enough to see things begin to change. A physician.
"Internationally, it is the standard for childbirth." Amen! it's about time Missouri catches up with the rest of the world. Thank you Senator Loudon for your hard work and perseverance, thank you for standing up against the bully that is the medical obstetrics community. --from a homebirth mom.
Thank you Senator Loudon for rolling up your sleeves and getting a little dirty. May your voice be heard with open hears, may you stand tall and go down in Missouri History. St.Louis City Resident

Iatrogenesis is the number one killer in North America with over 700,000 deaths (reported) each year.
Neither Cupidity or Stupidity can stop a good thing. A Midwife's motivation is health, harmony and happiness. Ingredients missing in our current culture of medicalized birth.
You are the voice of sanity in a world of profit over prudence.
Many blessings to you, Senator Loudon!! I deeply appreciate your strength and courage it took to stand up for the freedom to choose safe births. After having a c-section and then a wonderful home birth, I'm so ecstatic that other families will be able to experience the same. My town of Columbia has the only birthing center in the state ... hopefully, there will be more to come now! You have made history - THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you so much Senator Louden for all you have done for the homebirthing families of Missouri! We will be forever greatful for your hard work and sacrifices on our behalf.
i've worked with birthing mothers for thirty years and have seen their rights get smaller and smaller with medical interference. obstetrics has become the biggest moneymaker for every american hospital , in some cases 67% of monies coming to the institutions from deliveries , any questions on why the interferences have become so common place?thank you senator , for remembering and putting into practice the republican stance of family values.
Senator Loudon deserves a great deal of credit for following his conscience and working for a cause he believes in. I have worked for the rights of midwives and birthing families for 25 years and, unfortunately, organized medicine is the chief opponent of birthing freedoms. Quality of care isn't the real reason for medical opposition - it's all about doctors' desire to prevent competition.
Thank you Senator Loudon, Thank you Thank you Thank you.... your stand and help are greatly appreciated! I have 4 children 1 born in a hospital w/ a midwife and then 3 born at home. Thank you again, and God bless.
Midwifery should not have been made illegal in the first place. It is not practicing medicine. We in Missouri are so thankful to Senator Loudon for standing up for families. This is a wonderful victory and I'm ecstatic! I'm an R.N. and the best birth I had out of 5 was my home birth with a VERY skilled midwife.
Thank you, Senator Loudon! Well done. I'm glad your wife got the care she deserved, and gladder still that you've made it possible for other women to have same.
Senator Loudon has made an enlightened stand on behalf of quality maternal/fetal health care for Missouri's women & their families. As a nursing student deeply concerned about the state of our current health care environment for both patients and professionals, I heartedly applaud his efforts!
The most notable thing about the Senator's action is that there are no big lobbies with a lot of money behind it. What he is doing for this issue is out of conviction for what is right for the people of Missouri and in defense of the constitution, which he swore to defend.
