This is probably a late comment, but I'm so sorry for you and your friend. If it's not too late, don't lose the faith that he'll live to see the dawn, and make sure he doesn't either. To help him, try helping him figure out WHY he's experiencing these emotions. Then you can tackle the main cause of this bleak situation and, hopefully, create a solution/prevent it from happening again. He has already taken the first step by admitting this to you. Trust me, I know how hard it can be doing that.
