  • My script now comes up with an error saying, "The server “[number]” may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."

Would you have any idea why that is and how to fix it? The script was working before but now that I'm overseas, I would have no way of checking what's going on there. :( @wyattjob

  • I just completed this and I can access my G-Drive external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme. Thanks for the video.

  • what is the "UserName"/"ShortName" that you are referring to?

  • i did exactly what u say but it doesn't work.. i did what another guy here said..and it worked but while i was on the network...it looks like u really know about this..so please help.

  • is there a way I can program the script, so it can ask for the password?

  • at 2:23 there is no option of "SHARE DISKS OVER WAN" what should i do? please help me!

  • @oOAndrewsOo Update your firmware.

  • @wyattjoh how do i do that on mac? I'm noob! help me please! :D

  • @wyattjoh still not there

  • @oOAndrewsOo

GO TO: manual setup > internet > internet connection

and click " share a public IP address" in the "sharing connections" box

    :)

  • Hey, Thank you first of all for this video. But I got a prob. I did it at first as u said, but under bridge mode and all worked fine. Now I changed to Shared IP, and I cannot access my TC anymore from another internet. I got my tc plugged into a router. What can I do now?

  • Does the WAN IP address show on "What is My IP Address" changes every while and the other?

Could I benefit from my WAN IP, WAN IP, Primary DNS and Secondary DNS shown in the status page on my home base router?

  • I'm painfully stuck with this.

I'm using a seperate router as my wireless LAN provider and for internet connection.

I then connect the Time Capusle to the router via the WAN port.

    1. Is this how you have done this?

    2. What settings should be used in the 'internet' tab?

    thank-you for this video!

  • No script necessary: just drag and drop mounted volume to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items tab

  • How do I figure out my "short name"?

  • @wyattjoh Great Video! 2 Questions:

    1. Is it going to be as fast over the internet as it is when you have it on your home network? I'm going to be in college and want to stream my music off my time capsule at home to college. At home this works, but when I do it over the internet, do you think its going to be fast enough?

    2. I use my time capsule at home , I plan on going to college. A computer will not always be connected to it at home, can I still use it in college? What would be a solution?

  • couple questions:

1 - will this work on a external HD connected to an airport extreme?

2 - will you be able to access the drive without it(the airport or time capsule) connected to a computer?

3 - will you be able to access your drive from a PC?

  • @flaminyon

    1) Yes, as seen in the "File Sharing" tab of the AirPort Utility, you can see that it says "... sharing access for your AirPort disks", which include connected volumes to the airport extreme.

    2) If what you are asking is what I think it is, you should either look at purchasing a router like the time capsule / airport extreme, or look into secure sharing software on a dedicated server (Like OpenVPN)

    3) And No. The PC does not natively support afp volumes.

  • @wyattjoh

great tutorial! Can i connect to an external HD connected to the TC as well?

  • Wan is not an option for me to check under file sharing because the time capsule is in bridge mode. Any advice how to mount the hdd via the internet leaving the time capsule in bridge mode?

  • @Ajeetje83

Not through the airport config pane, you need to set up your network in "share a public..."

  • Great video very helpful thank you

  • It is too bad Time Capsule's BackToMyMac doesn't work.

But then, how could Steve sell his online 20GB service.

  • great video. great help, thanks!

  • something wrong with your video. its not complete. By the way what should I put in the password part?

  • @narra73 The password is the password of the time capsule. There might be a problem with your internet browser, I was able to watch the full video myself.

  • once you are ready to move onto the applescript step...is this when i would use another computer (the remote computer) to write the applescript? the applescript code would have to be saved on the remote computer to access the timecapsule, correct?

    thanks

  • Does the time capsule disk have to be mounted at all times to be accessed eternally?

  • Wan is not an option for me to check under file sharing. What should i do?

  • @traci498 You might need to update the firmware of your device, or the Airport Utility.

  • @wyattjoh no the problem is that you using your time capsule in the tab internet Connect using Ethernet. that's why you don't see the wan selection!

  • this was very good... i'm very glad that you took the time to educate us on this. this should be a big help!!!

  • lolol wyro, your voice is awesome

  • how to connect mi mac to the internet? doar_wrestling@yahoo.com

  • but do u know any otherway to make it faster?

  • No, like i said, your transfer rate is limited by your internet connection speed.

  • @Jack1997LAN Buy road runner turbo or a comparable service upgrade through your ISP. It jacks up your upload speeds so you can speed up access to time capsule when you're not home.

  • how do you make the internet accest faster ?

  • @Jack1997LAN The only way you can get your time capsule to transfer files over the internet unfortunately is to get a faster internet connection. The transfer speed is limited to that of the path it takes to get there, because it has to go through the internet, that is your only solution. The only other method i can think of is to just transfer many small files rather then a few big files, it would allow for a better transfer speed overall.

  • If anyone is looking for any other mac tutorials, send me a message, or comment here and ill get it up ASAP! Thanks for watching!

  • While there isnt a physical button for the time capsule, as per the video response, you can disable the wireless feature through your airport settings.

  • inside the wireless network. other routers have a physical button to swich wireless on or off. is this at least in the time capsule menu(software) possible?

  • So do you want an automated solution for turning off the wireless from away from home or just how to turn off wireless while you are inside the wireless network?

  • thank you..sorry in germany the wirelss feature is called w-lan. many routers do have this option to switch it off manually or deactivate it (in settings) for example at night. i'm looking forward for your next vid ;)

  • Ive changed my mind, ill just post the others here. When you say the wlan-router, do you mean the TC's wireless feature?

Also, the HD only spins up when it is being accessed, but it always has power.

  • It is possible to mount what is called the sparsebundle over the internet to access files stored within your TC backup however, to mount it, your mac will have to download the WHOLE image (Around the size of your hard drive) over the internet. So, i personally suggest storing files that you want to access more often in a separate folder, you can make an action in automator to auto archive and copy the files to the timecapsule (Maybe next tutorial!) As for your other questions, ill message you.

  • very nice tutorial..thank you!

is there any possibility to access a file, which is saved on your capsule as a macbook-backup (so kind of open the backupfile itself) ?

my other questions are: can you switch off the wlan-router to save energy and is the hard drive of the Time Capsule runing 24/7?

    thank you very much ;)
