when i go to sounds and audio devices it says i dont have anything installed but clearly my speakers are on and when i turn my cpu off i hear sound but when i try to watch videos or play games i cant hear anything. any suggestions? could this be a virus? thanks

Heres something you can try (works on vista/7): go to the bottom right, if all the icons are showcased, click on the speaker looking thing and set it higher. If not, then click the arrow facing up in the bottom right and then click the speaker and turn it up.

thnx when u said "go speaker volume which is under the speaker setting section" i couldnt find speaker volume so i started 2 click things when i clicked sound effect manager and it explained everythin
