@lkt1842 well, then if we know we'd per-calculate S' prior to calling STEP_FUNCTION, then why do we still need parameter a in that function signature?
My Question: in the proposed cost function (in particular, the step function), I don't see why it would be necessary to have a signature that invoves a derivative value:
your definition : STEP_FUNCTION(S,a,S')
S - current state, a - action at S, S' - result of action a at S.
See? Actually, we'd defined a function RESULT(S,a) -> S' which I think eliminates the need for the third parameter S' to STEP_FUNCTION. Anyway, I might be wrong, but this just doesn't feel okay to me.
@nemesisfixxed Well, this function does calculate cost of transition between two states, so two states in parameters are kind of obvious... Like when you need a function to calculate distance between two known points you would typically pass start coordinates and end coordinates, not a start coordinate and a vector pointing in the direction of end point. Even when you can calculate the end point inside, that would be doing duplicate work that is beyond the scope of the function.
@nemesisfixxed The reason is most likely performance. While you're changing the state by testing the actions on states, you can keep track of these data structures. Then, instead of recalculating the results (which may be very expensive depending on what you do), you simply pass pointers to these temporarily available data structures in memory. Sure you could omit the S' parameter for the resulting state and instead calculate it using your RESULT(S,a) function, but it could be expensive.
To fix sound go to Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / Audio / Sound Playback / Advanced and change output to mono. If you have creative x-fi they don't have mono option in windows, so switch card to "creation mode" and open creative audio console, then in multichannel wave tab add a chorus effect on channel front l/r with mix knob set to "wet".
@EricFleet such is the truth. I'm afraid people are just dropping off one by one :( The Unit 0 introduction was only viewed by 43 thousand people, only 11 thousand watched the Unit 1, Intelligent Agents, and less than 2 thousand have made it to the end (with some videos amassing only below 900 views). *sadface*
@LankyCyril Oh well. I cannot say for certainty that I will be able to complete the full program. 50+ hours a week at school, a family and pursuing my MBA through the University of Florida. This stuff is fun though and meets my money budget really well :) I am thankful for what Stanford is providing us...
@EricFleet Yep, I've noticed the same. And there are less than a thousand who watched the homework? Are these stats for all youtube servers all locals?
@brysweeney Glad to see the number increased. Still about 3% of the folks who signed up. I am pretty sure, however, that if the video is watched anywhere that it counts on YouTube. It is just an embedded video. Could be wrong, though :)
