  • dang, I seen some people claim to make vids to the German lyrics but they have all been wrong. Good job I'm impressed. Most I seen think the English lytics are an egsatic translation but there far from. I'm happy to see some one do one that accually knows German.

  • the German version is so much better than the English version

  • @yeah3326 English version IS NOT anywhere close to same words as German! Get Some video with German and english translation to it. Eng version is "watered' down. more "gentle" than German version....Wasn't the Wall still up when this came out?

  • you can classify a canadian by if they love canada

i live in the us right now and canada keeps looking better every day you know things are fucked up when americans are jumping the border to canada why do people always migrate north??

  • Like I've said before, this song always reminds me of East and West Germany, when tensions were so high between the communists and the allies that something as trivial as a bunch of balloons crossing the border could've been enough to ignite WWIII

  • anyone else notice how much the singer looks like Tina Fey?

  • ROFL, i was just watchin the ep of 30 rock where she sings the song, so i looked this up and i thought the exact same thing, and a second later i read ur comment ^^ maybe that was meant to be a lil jk on that ep :P

  • i did the same thing. it was damn hilarious

  • Epic :P

  • Holy crap, you can take German in high school? I love the Germans because they are so strong ( im brazilian, and i love my country) but thanks for the info

  • Really! I love Brazilians! (Because I am partly one. Also part german. Truly Canadian. How do you classify a Canadian?)

  • Thats nice. Have you ever been to Brazil or Germany?

  • I'v been out of the country once, to the U.S of A but was only awake 10 minuets into it. Plan to go though, visit family. More so Brazil.

  • bobslayer1881 what an Ignorant comment, Britain is well known as the home of modern rock, whether metal or poprock (99 luft ballons is pop); German rock has far less widespread success outside Germany and Europe, the only modern bands I can think of are Rammstein and Tokio Hotel.

The whole song is about a world war beginning when the GDR shoots at air balloons launched during a gig at the ruined Reichstag building just west of the Berlin Wall.

  • ... 99 balones rojos .. y olé!.. jajaja ..peacee..my best whises for all the people..

  • i live neer europ (uk) and i love germans for hard rock.

english people just cant sing rock we just sream and shout when the germans make the sounds.

got ta love the germans even tho they started 2 wars but who cares, i dont

  • Im from UK, english rock n screamo is all shit, im a fan of MC and Rap n stuff, any german music just sounds cool

  • Who declared war on who in WWII?

  • Not the nazis, but the American and the Jappanese, when Japan took over Alaska I think and the U.S. declared war and it soon broke up into the whole war

  • Are you sure about all that? Does Pearl Harbor ring a bell? Does Europe ring a bell?

  • Im sure the guy who was asking thought German conquered Poland hence the WWII srarted, so I\I gave him the info that he thought, i susoect he thinks of that because everywhere I see people think it officialy started with German and Poland, Im fully aware of all the batlles that happened before, I know my history, it may be you im not sure who asked

  • You had a few drinks when you wrote that didn't you? :)

  • @shibec69 , my, my, how'd you know. I was in the bar for a couple of hours, and that hangover, my, i was screwed. Have you been stalking me, or is it you Jerry? Or Marrie. 0.o fancy.

  • @360gamer4life12 - hey, no worries. Guess what? I'd had quite a few drinks too! :)

  • @shibec69 , yeah guess we all got screwe, did you get a hangover. Umm, maybe next time I wont throw up Jerry, or slap your ass.

  • @360gamer4life12 - sure, a little but...but I suffer for my art!

  • @shibec69, I barely remember writing anything, dont trst whateve I said, Marrie, sorry about that, whatever I did, or Jerry, srry I pissed on you, you looked like a toilet.

  • To Acidosis

You really don't know your history or geography (geography is the study of the earth). Pearl Harbor was at the end of the war. Poland is a country in Europe

  • To: Chantillybabe

Your reading comprehension leaves much to be desired. Where do I state that Poland is not in Europe? Oh and by the way, Pearl Harbor took place in Dec 1941, and WWII ended in Europe in May 1945, hardly the end of the war.

  • The prefered spelling is Harbour not the American Harbor

  • Then followed the Germans w/ Poland

  • nasists

  • Vierstberg Nena! Ich bin liebe yaghh!

  • german is such a beautiful language!!

  • German is one of those languages that's not too soft on the ears or the tongue, but there's something strangely romantic about it.

  • nice song

  • ich bin liebe 99 rotbalons!

  • how do I live for 30 years and miss this song?

    I love music with meaning.

and a hot German artist doesn't hurt

  • your my new best friend

  • sexy, most people think that French is a sexy language, but I think German is far sexier

  • German is a gutteral language....French, with Spanish, and Italian are romance languages....now which one sounds sexy??

  • you all are way off...sanskrit is the sexiest!! lolz

  • The german version owns the english version. If you say that the englsih is better go and dig yourselfe a hole in the ground and lay down and cover yourselfe up with the dirt.

  • Even if you don't understand a shit german it's better than the english. That is only because of the german language. :)

  • in 30% and the only german i no is oh mein gott...

  • anybody who likes the english version im srry but u r noob! ha ha just thought i would say that...

  • lol, sorry

  • I jam to this shit everyday

  • How dare you use that vulgar noun to refer to the most wonderful song of all!

  • I like this song so much. it is great. between the german and english version. I like the german version better. they played this song in the movie watchmen and it was amazing.

  • Sie ist so hübsch

  • She is so pretty :-)

  • Sie ist so hübsch

  • german ver. kicks ass

  • i am half german too and i like the techno one it is prettty good

  • Im half German too and I like this one better :) Though who in Pa isn't half German really.

  • Hast Du etwas Zeit für mich

Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich

    Von 99 Luftballons

    Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont

Denkst Du vielleicht grad' an mich

Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich

    Von 99 Luftballons

Und dass sowas von sowas kommt

  • lol that is funny most ppl like the german over english

  • i agree i like the german way better than english plush im half german so maybey thats why

  • It was written back in the 60's (or 80's?), and it's about nuclear war. The red balloons released by the kids show up as planes or missles on radar, which makes both sides (Russia and NATO) mobilize their military. They fight, they nuke eachother and she's the only one left in a runied city.

  • dude this is bad ass im german

  • i still do prefer this verson over the english verson nice song

  • It's so funny that this version

was waaay bigger in the US then

    the english version.

i like this one much more, too.

  • same here

  • It's longer because the german language has more vowels and consonants than the english language. And yes, it is a very good song. I'm adding it to my playlist now....

  • Well, thats not what I ment.

When this came out and became popular

in the US, they made an English version.

But, the English version wasn't as popular (:

  • Oh, I see. Well, thank you for explaining!

  • first the song isnt a german version. it is a german song orginally sung in german. secondly 99 luftballons translates to 99 air balloons not red balloons

  • Exactly! As in "Luft"ballon or "Luft Waffe"....or "Luftansa"...AIR!!!

  • red balloons is more appropriate (communism and all) but probably didn't fit in with the German language

  • wow this song is really cool but whenever it comes on the radio my mom cringes because she said they overplayed it when it first came out! lol!

  • KICK ASS SONG!!!!

  • its in german dummy, of course you didnt understand it

  • luftballons means air ballons, but since we dont say air ballons, they changed it to red ballons, and had her mock sounds to sing in english because she didnt know it.

  • From the U.S Civil War until WWI Balloons were used for observation until fighter planes made them absolete (Napoleon even considered using a fleet of ballons to ferry French troops over the English channel or support a naval invasion of Britain). Zeppelins (Balloons's bigger and baddest cousin) were used by the German Air Service in WWI to launch the first strategic long range bombing raids on England and France.

  • Actually, Nena Kerner could speak decent English at the time 99 Red Balloons was recorded (late 1983 probably), but her command of the language definitely wasn't good enough for the upcoming US promotional tour. So she was given a quick crash course in time to impress international journalists.

  • The original idea for the song came from members of the band seeing some balloons float over the berlin wall in the early 1980's and wonder if the Soviet Block RADAR could detect them, and if so, could WW3 start by mistake if someone sent a lot of balloons floating eastwards.

  • 99 single balloons are probably too slow to make a potential target or radar signature, unless they were attached together. Maybe then they could match a more dangerous radar signature especially at high winds.

  • its a song about war, and how the red balloons represent freedom

  • Well done!!
