im a puerto rican women and my daughter has nappy hair. lots of latina men and women have nappy hair. im going to be opening a store soon, i agree asians and indians are running all these stores, but thats because nobody else is stepping up. their smart, they know where the money is at. see i have passion for hair and doing hair, thats the difference. But since im Latina not Black does it really make a difference? smdh
I THINK WE NEED tO STOP GIVING THESE DANG ASIANS oUR MONEY BECAUSE THEY DONT CARE ANYTHING ABOUT BLACK WOMENS HAIR JUST OUR MONEY WE aRE GIVING THEM OUR MONEY WHILE THEY ARE LAUGHING AND INSULTING US IN CHINESE AND KOREAN IF ALL BLACK WOMEN JUST WENT NATURAL WE WILL PUT THESE BUSINESSES OUT IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS WAKE UP, SAVE YOUR HAIR FROM THESE DANGEROUS PRODUCTS USED TO CLEAN YOUR HOUSE aND SUPPORT BLACK HAIR CARE STORES
I do try to shop at black owned hair shops, because asians disrespect us behind our backs, one asian shop owner had the cheek to say to me my hair was better than other black womens hair because it is not so tough. And another person or him in the same shop asked my asian friend whose boyfriend is black why she would go out with someone soo dark. Alot these people are taking our money and laughing after us, do not be fooled.
@cazthalondoner88 are you from the UK or North America? Cuz in the UK, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Indian people are called ASIAN while in North America, people from east and southeast asia are called ASIANS. if you think these people are racist, then go to South America where racism towards Blacks is very overt. I just watched a documentary where the plastic surgeon was like "Why do you want to look Beyonce. She's a bit Black" to the white presenter. SMH.
I remember when i was in Londond (east london.. green street) So mant indians/asians owning black hair stores and know NOTHING about our hair. But money talks!
Hello were a new Black Owner company were looking for friend to be add to us will you help .remyhairrus please look at our site were looking for lady friends from your facebook page friend list .
2 words come to mind: CUSTOMER SERVICE. I am very high maintenance when I go shopping. If I go to a restaurant I want superb CUSTOMER SERVICE. When I go shopping for clothes I want to be SERVED by someone who is INTERESTED in me. If I go to a concert I want to be ENTERTAINED. In short I want VALUE for my hard earned MONEY. S/He who serves me well gets my £!!!
Is that sore in Stratford(east London)? it looks like it! ;)
And another thing. I find it quite weird that the Coolie Man is selling black hair products to Black people even though they know NOTHING about our hair! ;/
Its a money spinner, and they are smart enough to invest in a black hair shop as they know black people and hair=MONEY!
Wtf is up with Black people??? I'm black, but I don't understand why all these foreigners(Indians, Chinese, Vietnamese) can always come in and set up shop. Why don't Black people like owning things? Do we not understand that this is the exact reason why racial prejudice hurts us the most? How can we expect to have any social or economic power w/in societies if we allow others (who often hate and consider us inferior) to own the economies of are neighborhoods and even countries!
I have watched your report so many times and just had to tell you how mis informed and WRONG TO HAVE GOT THIS ONE, the UK market is nothing like the US's black hair care market. In fact many of the "Black Owned Hair care businesses in the UK are supported by the Asain hair shops and visa versa. I just happen to be "black" and am one of the owners of the largest beauty supply in the UK. Your girl interviewed me when you did this report but I do not see any of my comments on your clip.
I lived in London all my life and PAKs is DEFINITELY not a black owned shop and please stop trying to pretend like you did on other black-related hair form.
It is also our fault because if we did grow her out naturally and take care of it, which will mean no business for these rude Asian owners to disrespect you, it will mean you take power and knowledge into your hands but i guess till then right?
What was said in the documentary is true. Its the same in the UK as in the states. The black hair care industry here is dominated by Asian's. The black people that are smart should boycott your hair shops like I have.
Were Asian and we sell to black people 100 percent please contact us by email if you want to make money contact us we sell you 100 percent human wigs and Pure weaves Remy .
Whats the fuss, I need petrol to drive my car I don't go seeking for a black run petol station. I need food to eat I don't go specially seeking for a black owned shop unless its specific to that particular shop. What I am getting at is really it does not matter the colour. I do care about good sevice and value as a paying customer. Because I work damn hard for my money.
who cares ??? this is pathetic!! Why are we now trying to compete with Asian people? Asian people tend to be entrepreneurial and filled the niche in the market which people ignored. They provide a service necessary for me and I am not complaining. I personally don't want to run a hair shop so what is my business ??
THANKS TO BLACK CELEBS WHO HAVE CREATED THIS MONSTER WHEREBY NONBLACKS ARE MAKING MONEY OFF OUR n a p p y hair : beyonce, ciara, tina turner, lil kim, ashanti, eve, brandy and a host of others. when it was just PERMs it was sold at a mom and pop korean stores ! now, i see that muslim Indians have got into the this big business. oh, i forgot, chris rock movie showed where Vivica Fox like Malaysian weave hair ! a neighbor spent $200.00 a trek for this weave for her 14yr girl ???
The truth is Asian black hair beauty shops are in direct contact with the suppliers who are also from India or China and they can speak the language and they travel to the country and than they can negotiate a good price. I'm not saying blacks cant do the same but they will need to work much harde to compete. Although the customer usually black may go to a black run shop. But I agree with the young lady in the report now a days its not colour its good customer service.
@PLEASANTGIFFT BATTY BWOY YU INA WOMAN BUSINESS NOW ANY WHERE YOU GO ON YOU TUBE I CAN FIND YOU THAT WILL TEACH YOU TO LEAVE PEOPLE BUSINESS A LONE DUTTY BWOY KARTEL GO SUC..... YU MADDA A GAZILLION TIME
why is it a qeustion of colour, Why does it matter so what koreans and south asians, sell most of black hair products. They found a need in the black community and they filled that need by providing all those hair products that WE buy. PLease do not complain because they got there before you, they work hard to get their money. Just because your black it does not make it your exclusive right to sell black products. Imagine if china decided to only sell to their own... You would have nonthing
To all those on the same level as myself, IGNORE THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS. THERE ARE SOLUTIONS TO OUR PROBLEMS, WE WILL GET THERE 1 DAY. REALISE THIS, NOT EVERYONE IS FOR THE MOVEMENT SO LEAVE THEM WELL ALONE. PEACE
Why should blacks resent koreans and pakistanis for taking over the "black hair" industry? Blacks just don't have the intelligence or discipline to dominate ANY industry; this is why blacks will always be the poorest sector of any population.
@stillcracking not all black women smell like that. you're obviously ignorant. it's quite comical. there are many black women who wash their hair everyday. i would tell you to stop sounding like a dog but, that'd be an insult to dogs. you're obviously below dirt quite frankly
@stillcracking Hmmmm,it seems to me you are devoting an aweful lot of time and energy hating on black people. A man is superior to an ant and has no need to say so. Yet here you are on a video about a black issue that has nothing to do with you. Careful, hater. Your insecurity is showing...
@mbsunlimited You write well, very smooth. I must assume that you are a person who identifies themselves as "black" or "African American", when, in fact, you are predominantly Caucasian or Asian, with only a slight taint of black African blood.
@stillcracking Well, thank you for the compliment. If you glance at my profile you'll see that i am a very black ,black man. So much for your "Theory."
@mbsunlimited I am endlessly fascinated by the willingness of African Americans to accept anyone as "Black", even those who are predominantly of another race. This inclusive behavior is typical of underclasses throughout history, just as ruling classes have traditionally rejected individuals with ANY blood from the underclass. Although Barrack Obama is half white, he is still considered "black". I've never heard anyone refer to Tiger Woods as Asian.
I think if black women could stop wanting to be some-one else,we could turn this thing around! I hate hair weaves! I prefer a sista with natural hair,
@mbsunlimited Black women should just accept the fact that they are they least attractive, most masculine women of any race. A man needs to be a homosexual to fuck a most black women.
@bawokoroma I see...so it's just fate, or coincidence, that throughout the world, there are no peaceful, prosperous, orderly black cities. My my, fate itself must be bigoted against blacks!
@stillcracking Actually there are many peaceful and prosperous black cities despite the atrocity of both slavery and colonialism done by the most "intelligent races". Don't be an idiot, go do your research and most of all don't waste my time with your retarded, ignorant and bigoted comments. Honestly get your head out of your ass.
I think a solution should come to this issue and not power struggle between 'black' and Asian, Korean owned stores. Perhaps it is hard for me to speak about everyday issues of a women with 'typical' African hair' such as taking care of it and living in a 'eurocentric society', I'm a 100 % African from Horn of Africa and most people over there has a different texture of hair (wavy and managable). My point is that Black women everywhere should learn to take care of their hair and its history
The asians that own black hair stores where i live are mostly Korean or chinese.... Like other races... we still get followed around the store to the point where I live.... black people just dont go in there anymore they get harrassed by them
Nothing bad meant, but taking example of the highstreets in London, the only African own stores, restaurants, Internet shops, car hire etc is owned either by Somalis, Ethiopian. Note that I'm only refering to African countries. Don't know where the Ethiopian people got their products from but at least I felt good giving to people from my continent and not to ASIANS who already controls a lot of industries in England.
I live in Sweden (Sthlm) and even though it might not be a big market as it is in London and US but over there these stores are dominated by Ethiopians and Eritrean and a few by Somalian. Personally I believe it is up for indviduals but also the culture and your fostering plays a role. In my adult life I have experienced that Africans everywhere except in Africa, the people of Horn of Africa (Somalis, Ethiopian and Eritrean) are the one with most entrepreneur minds.
Sorry but this to me is just nonsense. Why are ppl hating on Koreans and Asians for starting up a shop to sell hair products to black ppl?? They spotted a business opportunity and they took it. What is wrong with that? Just because they are black hair products doesn't mean only black ppl can sell them or that the money should go exclusively to the 'black community'. It's all business at the end of the day. There is nothing to stop black ppl from starting their own hair shops if they want.
that would be fine, there are plenty of white owned restauranrs which specialise in asian/oriental/japanese foods. Nobody complains about them. Not to mention I am pretty sure it is mainly men behind the female beauty industry - nobody is complaining about that. It is all business.
@cymonebreathe Not at all, people should stop equating culture with business. At the end of the day whether a hair shop is run by an asian or a black person the likes of you or I are not going reap the benefits of the profit - only the business owner is. So people should stop complaining about the injustice of it all. To me it is a mute argument. There are some supermarkets which stock black hair products to cater for the whole community are ppl going to point fingers at them too?
This is madness black people need to wake up! this is a business mainly for the black community and we have asians, koreans and even polish exploiting us and as a nation we allow it (they are laughing at us). I dont see black people selling asian clothes or polish products so why are we allowing this crap to happen to us. start spending your money within your community and maybe we can get somewhere as a people.
While women of Black African ancestry may desire "good hair," Asian women from the Indian subcontinent be they Indian or Pakistani, desire "fair skin" comparable to women of European ancestry.
Oh I shop there! And at many others and to be honest it does bother that every time I walk into a black hair shop Asian men are running it with cousins and friends. Most of the time they don't even care to help or know how to help. They just there to collect money and that's it. Grrmph!! To e honest Asian people run almost everything in London now! Hair, food, electronic shops, Cashiers jobs...just go to London and see what I mean. They run everything!
I find alot of these shops are run by asian men who can b vry disrespectful or see that everyone comin into their shop is a prospective thief. I think this stems frm the fact that asians in general look down on blacks...it reminds me off how things were back in the 60s with whites. I live in a predominatly white area so I have to travel 2 buy products. When they are rude I take my money elsewhere! Shops run by those of afro-caribbean decent tend to be helpful becuase they've used products.
Hey how about this. How about we stop fighting over WHO gets to mentally oppress us and just love ourselves for who we are. You want to stop making Koreans rich? Stop coveting their hair and covet your own. If black women take the time to really learn about their own hair they would know that damn near NOTHING sold in any beauty supply store (korean owned or otherwise) is healthy for black hair. It's all filled with chemicals, mineral oil and other garbage designed to keep you coming back.
@Sagatarriusmom Scandinavians have the best hair....Blond, soft, silky, flowing, naturally wavy hair....LUSCIOUS. Some Scandinavian women don't even have to shave their legs, the hair on their legs is so fine and blond, you can barely see it much less feel it. Blond women smell nicer too. Asians are also very silky, very smooooth, deliciously feminine!
@Sagatarriusmom I agree with you. But I live in Ohio, and I don't patronize a store or shop just because it is black or otherwise. I am a black woman, wear I live the black owned stores and restraunts talk to you with disrespect, have smart mouths and bad attitudes. So I stoped going to them and now take my money to the white man. It's sad, but true. I got such poor service in the last one I went into it was shamefull.
I make my own products and if i do frequent these stores i go to black owned ones now. This is what ALL of us should do even though they tend to be more expensive - this is ridiculous why do bp alllow others to exploit them and disrespect them? This situation is global go to france -same thing.
I hear so many black folks complaing at how the asian man disrespects them when they go into their shops, why continue to spend your money with them? if it means i have to travel from one end of london to the other end to give my service to black owned business then that's what i'll do.The money which black people could save from not getting the fake nails and eating chicken and chips would be phenominal! Put it back into Your community!
I only buy natural products and most of the people that sell don't have their own shops. There's a stall at Dalston market, also there was a shop i use to go to in Brixton off Acre Lane. There's an African market on 7th november at Woolich Town Hall. There's someone on this page called dlfunky who say they are in the process of setting up an organic range. A few internet business also.
Because black people are will and able to take rubbish from any1 other than themselves. So if u want to be rude to a black peson and get away just be anything other than black. We will take it. And if a black perosn is rude to us oh how dare u all hell break lose. That is y u will c a bw not take nonsense from her bm but her wm bf she will eat his crap and be a slave and then turn round and curse the bm. Same goes for a lot of bm too.
oh yeh i know theis bbss/hair salon thats owned by asians with black hairdressers and wen u get ur hair done u have to give it to the asians who own the store
THERE ARE SOME BLACK OWNED STORES HERE IN LDN, ok we hav 6 asian and 2 black owned i've neva thought about race i just go 2 the 1 with best deal i used to go to Nubian jack , prided it'self on being 100% blk owned but shut down a 3 months ago :( wonder what hapnd and does nebody remember yinka bodyline another blk owned business but they had 2 shut down cos they sold bleaching cream (their own fault),neway i support both cos sometimes the asian ones are cheap but the blk owned cn giv u advice
We have to get away from this mindset that cheaper is better. The asian stores are more competively priced cause they want our business and we give it to them. If we were supporting our own then they too could cut out the competion.
i make it my business to support my own anyways i've stopped using those commercial products and use things like shea butter, black soap etc... black people need to wake up big time!
exactly im inthe process of selling my own organic hair care products online to cut out the middle man and if i did sell them retail i would choose organic shops. The problem though is much more bigger than just retail the manufactuers and distribution companies that dominate the market are non black we are not making, distrubuting OR SELLING we are just consuming - and we wonder why the bc is in freefall: Why are we so da*m STUPID?
I'm meeting more and more people like yourselve into making and selling their won products. Even if it means spending a little more money on QUALITY products i'd rather help my own. Too many times i hear "oh, the asian man's cheaper". Of course he is! Look at how many shops they have they're shifting a whole lot of products cause we stupidily help them to do so.
I've just been buying all my products from Ghana or west africa. I have family from there living there so that helps. But I try to buy straight from the motherland if I can help it. Anything fair trade and all that. But I refused to line the pockets of people that have designed a system to keep blacks out even though thats what the majority of their products might cater to.
first i was against the boycott. Then I seen the laws against fair business competition. So, until it is fair I am all for the boycott. I just don't know if that means I can still buy from places like sallys or cvs or wal mart. What are the boycott rules?
So True! They dont even know about the products, they are reacist, but Manchester hulme has a very good shop their, they are asian, and they are friendly, polite, and dont follow you around the shop!
I think some of these products are gimmiks. Then have us trying out over 100types of hair products. Just give me some particular brands instead of a store that have hundreds. I always have to take that risk and I hate that. Shut you down., and give me less products. I wonder why we spends so much...because you give us so much and we risk it.
How come they own most of the motels, liquor stores, and 7-11's too--in America? More than Caucasions probably? That would an interesting subject. Thanks.
i'm a sister with natural hair too and i'm finding more and more ways of creating ny own hair and beauty products. there's plenty of info from other sisters out there on how to care for yours. anyone who says that they relax their hair because they can't manage the natural state of theirs is being ridiculus. what messages are you going to pass onto your
children about themselves.come out off those conditioned minds and learn to love and accept YOU! and another thing support your own.
I dont support any asian own business not because i dont like asians, I just know for a fact just like every black American person, that they just dont like us.
In every black hair shop in london i see indian owners why?? black ppl need to start opening their own business and sell their own stuf.
luckly im black and my dad's opening up a jamaican resturant =)
.. i relax my hair and thats all only cause it was hard for me to manage naural cause their was lots of it. and i wanted to do more hairstyles that suited me more.
I never wanted to tell another black woman how she should wear her hair....but this problem would EASILY be solved if ALL BLACK WOMEN WENT NATURAL WITH THEIR HAIR.
easy solution. Start loving what YOU are naturally, Black Woman.
I'm a natural sister, but I must say that Black Women are creative as HELL when it comes to our hair....now, if ONLY WE could be creative as all HELL in distribution, sales, and the overall management of the Black Hair Care Industry!
This is a damned shame, for real...
It's easy for me to say that I'm not part of the problem (I use all natural products from the grocery stores in my hood, some black owned!) but I can shamefully say that I'm not part of the solution, either :(
this is a sorry situation, i'm spending less and less of my money in asian stores even to buy food stuffs. i don't have a problem with asian people but a lot don't like us they're just happy take our money, we stupidly give it to them.
I went into Pak (indian owned) in Finsbury Park once, with my indian friend, she was shocked at how the staff were cursing the black customers in their own language. We have to be careful where we spend our money.
us black people really do need to start openin our own businesses, even if it is hair an beauty dat promotes white hair styles. The only businesses i really see are carribean restaurants and even then people dnt look after them financialy, or image wise but there are exceptions. Fuck baby steps black ppl are capable of anythin true talks, bless.
tell that to my indian friends down th e street!!!! and i have white and asian in me so i think i know what im talkin about!!!! and there are some out there who have nappy hair so relax yourself ... and if you know about yourself so much search the video lonely island then you'll see!!!!!!!
The Asians in the shops are selling to products aimed at black consumers. They do not consider themselves black, they are not in the business because they think they have similarities to their target consumer -it's just about money- which is fair enough! Asians generally do not use black hair products. The few in the western world who still use hair oils use different brands.
I've been watching your series and find it fascinating. What made you decide to tackle this topic? I think BOBSA is on the right track, but the best way for their businesses to flourish is to improve customer service. I am willing to pay more for quality products as long as I know that I am patronizing a store that values my business. Black owned businesses have a chance to gain momentum by providing us with products and knowledge that the Koreans don't have.
well in my opinion who do you blame?? i personally blame the black women who support these stores and who do not want to support black owned hair product businesses just stop buying perms and weaves i dont wear that stuff and my hair is growing longer every week
You should do a google or amazon search for Taking it Back Black book. It is a How to start your own beauty supply manual. There is a beauty supply system start-up package on the Taking it Back Black website too. You will get everything you need there.
lets take it back 2 black wall street(1921oklahoma) were we had our own businesses and all that, just forget all cultures an do us ,so many cultures have been profiting off us its time 2 do us
Black people stop hating your self and wear you hair natural and don't buy for anybody, but other blacks. The other races will never support you business.
I always find it weird that Americans dont seem to be aware that there are black people in the UK?? like the presenter implied at the begining of the vid
The reason that so called Blacks are in this position is easy to explain. Take for example The Story of Black Wall ST. Like Bob Marley said "Every time I plant a seed they say Killthem b4 they grow". If we weren't constantly attacked we would have been in a position to provide for ourselves, get the facts.
We should definitely stop complaining and STOP BUYING CRAP from people who clearly have no respect for us. If we make our own or do without, those who have "always provided for" our needs will be thrilled. I am sure that those individuals will be "grateful" to be relieved of the burden of our care as well as the burden of our hard earned money being siphoned into their pockets!
Go natural, Black people, and appreciate your God-given beauty. They can't exploit you without your consent!
Sadly racist White people are and have been very prevalent and perpetuate myths about Black People.
Asian & Caucasian people put together an agreement in America & UK in the 1960's that would give Asian people the monopoly on the Black Beauty and Hair care business-(the suppliers and importers), and block Black people out of it. Because White people did not want Black people to make any money from it.
I think what people are naive to is the extent to which Racism has shaped all of our lives.
I'm not on a we are all different or the same soap box. I just think that although we are all human, we do have differences.Black hair requires different care. So if an Indian, Asian, white or black person or whomever wants to dive into that industry...let them. I just would like for them to be fair, less condescending to, and appreciative of the consumer.
It's interesting to see that the situation is the same in the UK as in America, except here it is mostly Asians that own the beauty supply stores. I do, however, feel that this video is a bit to "picky". The market is what the market is. If anyone of any ethnic origin sees a demand in the market, and feel they can take advantage of it and supply that demand, shouldn't they? I think it's wonderful that as a whole things are being directed to black consumers...
as long as particular groups of people are not being unfairly squeezed out-by whatever means.
Are monopolies good?
I think it's more about directing money away from black consumers than directing 'things' towards them. I don't particularly mind patronising any business that can supply the product I want at a reasonable price but if I consider that this business owner would prevent my brother from doing the same because of his colour, then that would change matters.
Well i'm at university in Southampton (UK) and the black owned haircare store charges so much that it is actually cheaper to pay for my ticket to get back to lonon and buy the product in London (and that is just for a relaxer, not a hairdresser). If black run stores are going to try and fleece their customers because they think they won't go elsewhere they are mistaken. If they charged the same price for the same item i of course, would support the black company.
Perhaps the prices are higher because they are trying to fleece people but consider that the manufacturers/ distributors sell it to them at higher prices to begin with - for whatever reason.
Racists does it matter what color of the skin the owner of the store..this is the most bigot filled video ive ever watch... Next time i see a black person owned shop im not going to shop there cause he doesn't have my skin color
it shouldn't matter. it would be nice if it didn't matter. this isn't about being racist it's about being aware of and limitting the effects of racism. Perhaps if you see the videos about the Koreans excluding the black businesses in the US then you'll understand?
that is so true i think about that all the time when i walk into a hair supply store we as black people know what it means to deal with our hair why dont we open a store and we can also give advise.. crazy..
unfortunately selbs101, it is not that a BLACK hair care store is run by people of other races, it's that very few BLACK hair care stores are run by the very people that buy the BLACK hair products. We're not talking about Walmart or Costco here where they sell GENERAL products FOR EVERYONE! We're talking about BLACK HAIR CARE STORES FOR BLACK PEOPLE!!!!! try to wrap your head around that and maybe you can understand.
exactly. I respect Asian industriousness but it wd be nice if more blk ppl had a stake in the mkt. The othr issue is buying hair & skin products from ppl who do not have hair & skin like mine and don;t have a clue what's best for it. Have you noticed how when you ask their advice about a particular product, they'll just try to sell you the most expensive one? And another thing, though i dnt speak hindi i can understand when i or other ppl around me are being spoken about in a derogatory manner.
Dont be pathetic. Why should you care what race the people who own the shop is? Imagine if a white person walked into a shop, saw black people serving at the counter and walked out? They'd be called racists. Its exactly the same. Support "our people"? We're all humans, does it really matter?
What does bother me about these shops is the fact that when I go in, I am stared at hard like I am about to steal something! THAT IS WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT!
P.S in regards to getting my head checked, I will book an appointment with Tony Soprano's therapist!
I was bothered with that when I was younger now, if I am not respected I leave, and if they stare at me I ask is there a problem, if I get attitude or negativity I leave and I tell the people that I am going to tell everyone I know about how they treated me. I don't relax my hair now and I use natural products and Carols Daughter, color is not an issue with me respect is.
I live in seattle we dont have a black owned hair supply store in this city if we did they would make the prices so expensive some would prefer to shop at previous stores not me id rather pay 3x the money to pump the money back into MY community these ppl dont respect US at all why should we continue supporting THEM
The girl who said that she wanted to get her stuff and go home has it right, us black people spend too much time worrying and stressing over trivialities.
If it grieves black people so bad, boycott the shops and let your weaves get matted and your chemically relaxed/damaged hair drop out!
Why, when I go into these shops do they have a whole aisle for weave and nothing for naural hair...Not all black people wear weave! I have a big afro and wear it with pride.
Make your own natural products - they are simple and don't take alot of your time. Stop putting money into other communities instead of our own. Black people say some of the most stupid things at times, and then we wonder why whites and other races are ahead of us while we lag behind crying racism. We act likes fools most of the time. Anybody who thinks that placing money into another community is "trivial" needs their head checked - esp. if it's a black person making that statement.
Of course the man in the video is, quote unquote, "happy" -- he is making a lot of money from African/Caribbean customers. The usual story --do not like black people, but are willing to go into a lucrative market where the customers are black and will spend a lot of money on hair and cosmetics! Canada is a little better, however, still a way to go.
Black women can take a stand. Vow to buy only from black owned businesses. Use the web to search for those businesses in your area or those on the web ie. edenbodyworks dot com. So what if you pay a bit extra. If you have to perm your hair, wait twelve weeks before the next perm and wear your hair another natural way. You already know over perming is not good. Eat non-processed foods only so that your hair grows...not easy but we're not meant to eat processed foods. Do this for yourself!
no like I said before America made a deal with Asian manufacturers which gave them the monopoly on the black haircare business. Fake hair comes from the east all the manuals used to set up businesses and all companies are all in asian languages. dont be naive and buy into racial stereotypes, do some research.
now the asians are several years ahead and keep busines amongst themselves because of this racist deal made in the 50's & 60's.
yes applebaum i hear you. what you say i believe is true also. however, must we not draw a line and cry no more? we just need to get on with things now.i know two British Caribbean women who have recently opened small boutiques and are doing well. For obvious reasons white europeans are not going to make things easy for us, but that does not mean we cannot succeed in business! we need desire, passion and motivation. it is do-able.
Miggy talking about why things are they way they are and they have become this way surely that isnt crying. We cant move forward without first removing the ignorance about the past.
Of course Black people can succeed in business we do already. We need to own the Black Haircare business.
Desire Passion Motivation and abit of research and knowledge would be benificial too.
Learning Korean might help too (with regards to Black hair care)
not sure about any black owned places in London (though I'm sure there are quite a few) but in Manchester however, all the beauty supply shops I've been in are black run and owned. Paul's Hair World is a favourite of mine and they have a website you can order from too.
The question of blaming / not blaming other races or ourselves for black consumer and biznes woes gets tossed around alot. But, an alternative question is how often does other races, "directly" purchase goods and services of black people. Does those particular owners by choice spend "some" money back on black biznesses.

Alot these people are taking our money and laughing after us, do not be fooled.
cazthalondoner88 7 months ago 5
@cazthalondoner88 are you from the UK or North America? Cuz in the UK, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Indian people are called ASIAN while in North America, people from east and southeast asia are called ASIANS. if you think these people are racist, then go to South America where racism towards Blacks is very overt. I just watched a documentary where the plastic surgeon was like "Why do you want to look Beyonce. She's a bit Black" to the white presenter. SMH.

I do care about good sevice and value as a paying customer. Because I work damn hard for my money.

who cares ??? this is pathetic!! Why are we now trying to compete with Asian people? Asian people tend to be entrepreneurial and filled the niche in the market which people ignored.

They found a need in the black community and they filled that need by providing all those hair products that WE buy. @stillcracking Well, thank you for the compliment. If you glance at my profile you'll see that i am a very black ,black man. So much for your "Theory."
mbsunlimited 1 year ago
@mbsunlimited I am endlessly fascinated by the willingness of African Americans to accept anyone as "Black", even those who are predominantly of another race. This inclusive behavior is typical of underclasses throughout history, just as ruling classes have traditionally rejected individuals with ANY blood from the underclass. Although Barrack Obama is half white, he is still considered "black". I've never heard anyone refer to Tiger Woods as Asian.

My point is that Black women everywhere should learn to take care of their hair and its history
salina8712 1 year ago
The asians that own black hair stores where i live are mostly Korean or chinese.... Like other races... we still get followed around the store to the point where I live.... black people just dont go in there anymore they get harrassed by them
temickab 1 year ago
Nothing bad meant, but taking example of the highstreets in London, the only African own stores, restaurants, Internet shops, car hire etc is owned either by Somalis, Ethiopian. Note that I'm only refering to African countries. Don't know where the Ethiopian people got their products from but at least I felt good giving to people from my continent and not to ASIANS who already controls a lot of industries in England.
salina8712 1 year ago

There is nothing to stop black ppl from starting their own hair shops if they want.

brianb3000 1 year ago 2
that would be fine, there are plenty of white owned restauranrs which specialise in asian/oriental/japanese foods. Nobody complains about them. Not to mention I am pretty sure it is mainly men behind the female beauty industry - nobody is complaining about that. It is all business.
munchkette 1 year ago
yea but in america it would be a little fine but i dont know how they do it in london
brianb3000 1 year ago
perhaps the problem is that 'business' means more than culture, after all.
cymonebreathe 1 year ago
@cymonebreathe Not at all, people should stop equating culture with business. At the end of the day whether a hair shop is run by an asian or a black person the likes of you or I are not going reap the benefits of the profit - only the business owner is. So people should stop complaining about the injustice of it all. To me it is a mute argument. There are some supermarkets which stock black hair products to cater for the whole community are ppl going to point fingers at them too?

When ever i walk past these black hair care & African food shops, the Asian or Arab owner is always trying to sexually harass or seduce the woman.
If these monsters tried this type of behaviour on white woman, i shudder to think of the consequences.
These monsters have absolutely no respect!!!!!!!!!!

Blacks are not good business people;
they lack organizational abilities and discipline. Blacks should stop complaining
and be grateful to the Asian and Caucasian
races who have always provided for their needs.
jackinla8 3 years ago
Yes, because white businesses have never ever failed. Give me a fucking break.
PisceanBeautyy 3 years ago 2

They can't exploit you without your consent!
trj1922 3 years ago 4
Sadly racist White people are and have been very prevalent and perpetuate myths about Black People.
Asian & Caucasian people put together an agreement in America & UK in the 1960's that would give Asian people the monopoly on the Black Beauty and Hair care business-(the suppliers and importers), and block Black people out of it. Because White people did not want Black people to make any money from it.
I think what people are naive to is the extent to which Racism has shaped all of our lives.

Jamaican2bray? i undastand but
Stats say that Black men in da UK mostly date outside their race.
European, Mixed, Asian women any women but not Black women. We hav all been subliminally taught that natural black afro hair is ugly.
Many if not most Black men r not looking 4 a woman that has a short thick black afro of which most Black women r born with.
So alot of Black women conform to Eurocentric ideals+relax their hair like they brush their teeth. no 1 wnts 2 feel lonely or b seen as ugly.

I'm not on a we are all different or the same soap box. I just think that although we are all human, we do have differences.Black hair requires different care. So if an Indian, Asian, white or black person or whomever wants to dive into that industry...let them. I just would like for them to be fair, less condescending to, and appreciative of the consumer.
auribel1 3 years ago
It's interesting to see that the situation is the same in the UK as in America, except here it is mostly Asians that own the beauty supply stores. I do, however, feel that this video is a bit to "picky". The market is what the market is. If anyone of any ethnic origin sees a demand in the market, and feel they can take advantage of it and supply that demand, shouldn't they? I think it's wonderful that as a whole things are being directed to black consumers...
auribel1 3 years ago
as long as particular groups of people are not being unfairly squeezed out-by whatever means.
Are monopolies good?
I think it's more about directing money away from black consumers than directing 'things' towards them. I don't particularly mind patronising any business that can supply the product I want at a reasonable price but if I consider that this business owner would prevent my brother from doing the same because of his colour, then that would change matters.
tijhan 2 years ago
Well i'm at university in Southampton (UK) and the black owned haircare store charges so much that it is actually cheaper to pay for my ticket to get back to lonon and buy the product in London (and that is just for a relaxer, not a hairdresser). If black run stores are going to try and fleece their customers because they think they won't go elsewhere they are mistaken. If they charged the same price for the same item i of course, would support the black company.
Swirlyspiral84 3 years ago
Perhaps the prices are higher because they are trying to fleece people but consider that the manufacturers/ distributors sell it to them at higher prices to begin with - for whatever reason.
tijhan 2 years ago
Racists does it matter what color of the skin the owner of the store..this is the most bigot filled video ive ever watch... Next time i see a black person owned shop im not going to shop there cause he doesn't have my skin color
rhino8256h 3 years ago
it shouldn't matter. it would be nice if it didn't matter. this isn't about being racist it's about being aware of and limitting the effects of racism. Perhaps if you see the videos about the Koreans excluding the black businesses in the US then you'll understand?
tijhan 2 years ago
that is so true i think about that all the time when i walk into a hair supply store we as black people know what it means to deal with our hair why dont we open a store and we can also give advise.. crazy..
oolibrice 3 years ago
unfortunately selbs101, it is not that a BLACK hair care store is run by people of other races, it's that very few BLACK hair care stores are run by the very people that buy the BLACK hair products. We're not talking about Walmart or Costco here where they sell GENERAL products FOR EVERYONE! We're talking about BLACK HAIR CARE STORES FOR BLACK PEOPLE!!!!! try to wrap your head around that and maybe you can understand.
zombiegrl19 3 years ago 6
Zimchick1 2 years ago 3
Dont be pathetic. Why should you care what race the people who own the shop is? Imagine if a white person walked into a shop, saw black people serving at the counter and walked out? They'd be called racists. Its exactly the same. Support "our people"? We're all humans, does it really matter?
selbs101 3 years ago
What does bother me about these shops is the fact that when I go in, I am stared at hard like I am about to steal something! THAT IS WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT!
P.S in regards to getting my head checked, I will book an appointment with Tony Soprano's therapist!
LadySleek83 3 years ago 2
I was bothered with that when I was younger now, if I am not respected I leave, and if they stare at me I ask is there a problem, if I get attitude or negativity I leave and I tell the people that I am going to tell everyone I know about how they treated me. I don't relax my hair now and I use natural products and Carols Daughter, color is not an issue with me respect is.
mslovesrain 3 years ago 6
I live in seattle we dont have a black owned hair supply store in this city if we did they would make the prices so expensive some would prefer to shop at previous stores not me id rather pay 3x the money to pump the money back into MY community these ppl dont respect US at all why should we continue supporting THEM
keepemhonest126 3 years ago 2
The girl who said that she wanted to get her stuff and go home has it right, us black people spend too much time worrying and stressing over trivialities.
If it grieves black people so bad, boycott the shops and let your weaves get matted and your chemically relaxed/damaged hair drop out!
Why, when I go into these shops do they have a whole aisle for weave and nothing for naural hair...Not all black people wear weave! I have a big afro and wear it with pride.
LadySleek83 3 years ago 8

Canada is a little better, however, still a way to go.
globaljamaican 3 years ago
Black women can take a stand. Vow to buy only from black owned businesses. Use the web to search for those businesses in your area or those on the web ie. edenbodyworks dot com. So what if you pay a bit extra. If you have to perm your hair, wait twelve weeks before the next perm and wear your hair another natural way. You already know over perming is not good. Eat non-processed foods only so that your hair grows...not easy but we're not meant to eat processed foods. Do this for yourself!

no like I said before America made a deal with Asian manufacturers which gave them the monopoly on the black haircare business. Fake hair comes from the east all the manuals used to set up businesses and all companies are all in asian languages. dont be naive and buy into racial stereotypes, do some research.
now the asians are several years ahead and keep busines amongst themselves because of this racist deal made in the 50's & 60's.
its not laziness Miggy221
Applebaum 3 years ago 2
yes applebaum i hear you. what you say i believe is true also. however, must we not draw a line and cry no more? we just need to get on with things now.i know two British Caribbean women who have recently opened small boutiques and are doing well. For obvious reasons white europeans are not going to make things easy for us, but that does not mean we cannot succeed in business! we need desire, passion and motivation. it is do-able.
miggy221 3 years ago
