I caught Rick and Johnny on this tour. They played Seattle just before or after this was recorded. I was a young guitar player. I almost gave up after hearing these guys. I didn't give up and found my own thing...I do love hearing this after all those years.
great performance..I was at this show.. Friday/ late show..Johnny Winter headlined , Elvin Bishop opened, but it was the 2nd act we came to see... Allman Bros Band..this was also the weekend the Allmans recorded live at the Fillmore...J Winter and Rick D are great together..
I thought that this was a different song, but in thinking again carefully, I guess that I should ask the question instead, if this isn't the same song as Johnny's 1971 release of BB King's "It's My Own Fault" as he recorded it on the 1971 Sony/Legacy live "Johnny Winter And " with Rick Derringer providing the rhythm track.
I was there too. The whole show was unbelievable. Elvin Bishop- fantastic! Allman's with the steam train projection behind them- Fantastic! Johnny Winter FANTASTIC!!
I caught Rick and John is Seattle back in 71. I was (still am) a guitar player. I almost quit. It was very intimidating... This song is exactly what I heard that night.
if only I could get JW's show at Fillmore to add to my collection!! at least The Brothers were able to get an album from it. and to know that Johnny headlined the shows that weekend just shows how BIG he was becoming. I've been a fan of his guitar and gravelly voice since i was 14.....54 now and still say he's the greatest Bluesman ever.
That most definitely is Rick Derringer on the 2nd ( or co-1st) guitar .... The most amazing guitar duo ever, hands down - Like as if they could telepathically read each other's minds ,,,, The rhythm parts are so dead solid right on, and totally improv .... And, when they just let it fly and both played lead together, they actually were able to play "counterpoint" off each other, again totally improv .... This IS The Real Deal, Kids ..... Listen .....
I get tired of this Black, White, shit I don't know anyone that could finger like him, or play the slide for that matter, it doesn't matter, he knows it, so do all the other players !
Without doubt the greatest electric guitarist I ever heard. His natural, god-given ability was truly awesome. I may not like all his music but his technical ability to play the guitar was inspiring.
This made my day! It sounds too good to be a bootleg, where did you get it? It's not on the Live And album, did he put out another from that weekend at the Fillmore?
When it comes to blues guitarists, Johnny Winter should stand in the front line together with SRV, and .......Eric Clapton should be kept locked up somewhere away from his guitar!
@themadaboutmusic Johnny Winter is the greatest white Real blues guitarist Period,SRV and especially Clapton have more commercial hits so everyone knows them. One thing about these guys is they all give mad props to the original artist.
JW, EW, The Doobs,Los Lobos, Little Feat, Steve Miller, The Fixx and more are not in the bogus hall of fame. Since they inducted Abba, Iggy Poop The Cure, and ready to welcome the beastie boys that verifies the place has No Credibility. How can you have an accredited music hall without the legends? Screw those induction committee jackasses.
Had no idea these guys were on the same ticket at Filmore,I've had the Allman Bro's album at the Filmore, loved them and always have, got a chance to see Johnny in Columbus,Oh in the early 80's, the dude can jam,and play every insturment as well, good tune
I read the comments and its like everybody was there. Oh yea ok, well its like, in that case, I was there too. In fact, I was in the front row
Let's see, March 12, 1971... yes, the very next day I celebrated my 2nd birthday. I didn't have panties but I threw my diapers at Johnny Winter... complete with a winning prize in them
But I kept my baby bottle. Well yea, I wasn't stupid... thats how I sneaked in my whiskey. 12 years aged in the barrel... it was 10 years older than I
In 1967 I snuck under the fence at greenlake in seattle and saw a concert where 3 dog night was the headliner and led zeppelin was the opening band. Believe it or not, as I was only 9 years old, I didn't like led zeppelin.
@MrOnamission I didn't care for Zeppelin live either don't feel bad.Great studio band incredible talent but live was well......improvised and not all that great. Personal opinion
I was there that night, went to see Elvin Bishop,I was in for a big surprise, and the Allman Brothers were great also,it was daylight when the concert ended.
1971 I was 18 trying to avoid the draft. Johhny Winter on 8 track in a 66 GTO with fuel @33cents a gallon.Four finger counts for 20,a big mac for $1.00, six packs for $1.25. If you could not make college you could get a factory job. Look at it all now.
@jazzynet1 So was I, 9th & 10Th grades we smoked a joint after every class hour. Were Happy Kids! Didn't want to shoot or kill anyone like these days now. Wish we could step into a Time Machine and go back. Hines Park Gulley turn Around ( Drbn. Hts. - Metro Detroit Area ) a party every night 7 days a week ( in Summer DAY AND NIGHT ). Once a Hippie always a Hippie.
I got to see Johnny Winter And live on the first night the great Bobby Caldwell played live with them at the St. Pete National Guard Armory in St. Pete, FL in '71.
I was already a fan of both Winter & Derringer's incredible talents, & was so glad to see my local drum-hero (he was in a band called Noah's Ark) "make good" with that line-up. This brings back those great memories. Thanks for posting this!
Great upload.... you can hear the transition between this and 'It's My Own Fault', live version. 'It's My Own Fault' Live....Johnny Winter And, just gots to be the best live blues ever recorded.
The hours upon hours I've spent in my life trying to learn to play these 2 tunes...lmao!
@jonnywilco - Yes, Rick solos about halfway through (similar to the track "It's My Own Fault" on JWA - Live! Johnny gave Rick plenty of solo room on that live record.
Mercy! Hot playing from the whole group but Johnny was on fire---wow! Funny how it morphed into My Own Fault somewhere midway through.
I envy you guys that actually saw these shows. I was only 13 at the time and lived about 6 states away so that's my excuse. Big johnny Winter fan -- and Duane Dllman fan, actually. I would have loved it.
I was there! It was the Elvin BIshop Group, the opriginal Allman Brothers Band recording that classic live album and Johnny kicking ass. Whatta weekend!
I remember the Allman Brothers hanging out backstage watching Johnny kick ass during these performances... this was from the Allmans live at Fillmore East performance...great shows
i always looked for this! it was not on JW and Live and not on the new fillmore release =( where do u got it from? and why isnt it released on cd yet?
