I just tried this out yesterday, and it worked great with braided line, because there is no stretch. With mono line you have to be pretty much right over it, or real close, and have a decent angle so it slide down the line without stretching it too much.
i've lost countless lures over the years ,almost bought a commercial lure retiever but this looks like it will do the job, can't beat the price and easy enough to make...thank you
Can you just use a a 3-5 once sinker with a snap swivel?

That explains why I pulled up a few spark plugs attached to a catfish line... Took me about 45 minutes just to bring up a retriever!

a fishing weight might work better then a spark plug because spark plugs will rust and polute the lake
