Carbon Trioxide does not exist, and even if it did, the oxygen would be bonded to the carbon, which means it has different properties to a mixture of 1 part carbon, 3 parts oxygen. They just used it to fit the original metre used in Grease.

It couldn't. This is year 10 chemistry in the UK: Carbon is Tetra-valent (has 4 bonds) and oxygen is bi-valent (has two bonds) For Carbon Trioxide to form Carbon would therefore need 6 bonds.
