  • I'm a ol B Model lover from years back, yes even with the quadroplex, they were not speed demomds, and yes most were fire breathing Girls...the thing about today these new generation drivers they will never know what a stack mirrow is all about, and this today bunch have no clue as to what postive ground is Ha,..hey I truly enjoyed your video, like to see more and hear that old Thermodene talking....Johnnie B.

  • LOVE that sound, how fast can this old dog run?

  • he put the brake light switch on the shifter so,s,the can use the brakes without a cop seein his brake lights come on.ie brakin it down when he thinks a cop is trying to catch him speedin

  • @daexpediter that has nothing to do with anything-the truck will barely do 50 mph- I had to put the brake lights on a separate switch because they're LED's and have to be hooked up backwards because this truck is positive ground. If I had turn signals and marker lights I had no brake lights, and vice-versa. This truck is only driven about 50 to 75 miles a year to a couple of parades. You have no reason to say why someone else does something when you know absolutely nothing about it.

  • Why is it like that

  • Good sounding truck.

  • Wow this brings back memories i use to drive an old B81 model mack without power steering and with the Quad box i was just a kid driving a 10 wheel dump truck thinking i was bad ass. it was fun for a year or so then i got to the point were i hated the smell of diesel fuel.and 30 years later i buy a diesel f350 go figure

  • what do you call the shift knobs and where can you get them???

  • Comment removed

  • thats the way shorty is

  • explain to me if im worng pls anyone the first couple of shift he does is the low gears

wen he shifts to the other lever its the high gears

then wen he shift both at the same time its like splitting a modern day truck gears between high an low right im lost im just saying what i understand from the shifts he made

  • If you learn on a quad you can drive anything . I once had a DM600 .

  • how the fuck do you drive that

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • U.S.A.?

  • @palomasex Yes. Back in the old days.Imagine doing that in city driving.

  • this is nice to see ..very nice

  • was it a twin shift?

  • fuckin truck

  • first time i drove a mack with a set of sticks in it. i was so confused. untill i found out that the brownie is on the inside. got r down now.

  • I tell ya, you look at trucks like this and you realize how easy modern day truckers really have it!

  • wow thts alot of shifting

  • Turbos are fine, but just listen to that Natural Thermodyne!!!!That is a bulldog barkin'!!!Good job....

  • I wonder why did they left this great gear system.

  • @johnsenkenn , if im wrong correct me , but i think its because no one came up with the air splitter n hi lol air splitter

  • You only shift the main 2 times? Thats not a standard H pattern is it? It looks different. just trying to figure it out in case I ever have to drive one.

  • it's a standard 5 speed pattern in the main. you shift the compound twice in the first 4 in the main-under,direct,over.the last shift is from 4th to 5th in the main.

the main is overdrive in 5th. gear so if you went to 5th. in the main and back to underdrive or direct in the compound you'd actually be downshifting.

  • @otherdog59 the toggle switch is on the compound ,closest to you.i'm going from lo split to direct to hi split (towards the dash). then you go to the next higher gear in the main and start over in the compound, until you get to 4th. hi, then you just go to 5th. hi in the main.

  • Oh so the main is the farthest stick away from the driver. I had it backwards. I drove an R model with a compound and it s stick was to the right of the main

  • yup that makes sense to me now. Thanks

  • Whats the button on the side of the main stick that looks like a high low range selector?

  • just a spring loaded toggle switch I added to work the brake lights

  • is that a triplex?

  • it's a quadruplex, 5 and 4, but you drive it like a triplex on the road.

  • Oh OK thank you

  • That old girl sure sounds good. Years ago when you heard it,you knew what it was way before you ever saw it.

  • i hear grinding!!!!!!

  • me too-lots of grinding! this was actually some of my worst shifting, but the only trip ever filmed. that's the way it goes I guess.

I got a pile of excuses-the fingernail on my right pinky finger was ripped half-off...it was very hot...I was very tired...I ain't much of a truck driver...

  • @otherdog59 to hell with that you did a fine job

  • Ya I like these old trucks also. They make a man out of you when you drive them. Working for a landscaping co these trucks did alot more work than the new modern ones.

  • Interesting. I can't use 2nd and under in my Pete. Due to my ratios 2nd and under is slower than 1st and over so I must use 2nd and direct fot that shift.

  • Isadorus, the stick on the right is like a over under , then the stick on the right is your tranny gear selector...thats my guess. most likly an 18 speed. LOVE it.

  • Depends. If its a 5x4 its a 20 speed. 4x4, it'd be 16 speed. And your somewhat Jeepnuts. The first stick is the gear selector, out of 5. the second stick is like high & low, but with 4 speeds. As you shift each, multiply the number of the 2 gears and thats what overall gear your in.

  • love old macks nothing like them. today's trucks suck compared to what i call a real truck. give me a 4x4 crash box i miss'em

  • Today's trucks are doing the job that three or four of these would do....

  • True! Faster, safer, and with less fuel. Old trucks have character, though.

  • i love this video, but.. can anyone explain me the shifting patterns please? =)

  • Nicely done on the video, particularly one-hand technique for the TRQ's sections. BTW, is that a PTO cable on the Aux shift lever? I presume that it controls a hydraulic pump running off one of the TRQ72's three countershafts.

  • no,actually it's my brake light switch.I put LED lights on it and this truck is positive ground, so they have to be wired backwards.Had turn signals and marker lights but couldn't get brake lights grounded, so just put on 2 more lights and a separate switch, spring loaded-took the easy way out in other words!

  • Nice workaround for a sticky electrical situation there. I'd normally expect the brakelamps to run off either a pedal for the master cylinder (as in most sub-2-tons) or a pneumatic pressure switch (deuce-and-a-half up), something hard to do on some vehicles.

  • it does have the pressure switch, but when I put LEDs on it I could get brake lights or turn/marker lights, but not both to work. They were double contact bulbs at first, had to wire LEDs backwards, gotta ground something...I'll just put 2 more lights on it and use a spring loaded toggle switch!

  • For those who hardly knew about these old trucks, the knobs are known as the Cat knobs Many truck makers had the option of having these tall and skinny colorful knobs rather than the regular ball knob.

  • I still have the round knobs. I put these on because they're red. I had these laying in a tool box where i'd saved them for years, from back before the roadranger trans.changed to the new style knob and range selector.

  • Great stuff !!! Use to watch my father shift both trans. at same time with one arm hook through the wheel. He use to talk about big power in the old day 185 cummins and 4 and 4 trans. He last truck 575 Cat with 18 speed far far cry form the days of old Great stuff thanks for posting !!!

  • puta antiguedad

    puta porkeria

  • the truck SOUNDS great, oh and nice shifting. LOL:P

  • Sounds good

  • Great video and this is the first time I have ever seen such a spotless mixer cab. Unfortunately, I will never understand quad box shifting. lol

  • it's not that complicated,in the first 4 gears in the main box you shift the compond under-direct-over.the last shift is from 4th. to 5th. in the main. it also has lo-lo in the compound, but you don't need it on the road.

  • Does the aux sit in front of the main 'box (ie between main box and the clutch)? Why is it necessary for 1-2 shift to leave the main in neutral whilst the aux is shifted from high to low and not for other shifts? What's the procedure for down shifting (I've yet to see a clip of this so I'm assuming fairly difficult to perform well!)?Is the aux shifted before the main, opposite to up shifting.?

  • The Mack transmissions are actually compound transmissions, not a true auxilliary-it's all in one box.

You always make your upshifts first,or you'll never get it in gear,so to make a compound downshift you'd shift the aux. back to a higher gear first, then downshift the main.

  • I didn't realise the quad wasn't a true aux-thanks for clearing that up. There's a clip titled "twin stick pappy" of a '52 Mack with a triplex. The driver simultaneously shifts the compound and the main from 1H-2 Land 2H-3L, then double clutches 3H-4L, and 4H-5L. Unlike your set up, the 4H-5L is NOT a downshift. Is that because, in his truck, 5 (main) is direct drive as opposed to overdrive?

  • that's right. there's a 13 speed triplex and a 15 speed, depending on whether the main is direct or overdrive in 5th. gear. My quad. is an 18 speed, even though it's a 5 and 4. I don't know if some quads were direct in 5th or not.

  • cool man .... i'm almost understanding what is happening ...

  • mack quad box. He shifted into 5th gear while leaving it in 'hi split'. Your not supposed to split 5th gear, but i've seen another video where the guy split 5th gear.

  • you're right,it depends on whether your main is direct or overdrive in 5th.Mine is over in 5th,so to go to under in the aux. would actually be a dowhshift, direct would be the same ratio as 4th. in the main and over in the aux, so the last shift is from 4th. over to 5th. over.

  • guy or girl drivin

  • uuh guy lol

  • LOL

  • Comment removed

  • I like this video because it shows the other way to shift the quad box (without taking the left hand off the wheel.) Watch the video of the other guy shifting a quad box in a b61 and you'll see the other method. I really like both videos very much.

  • Those old Mack motors have a sound to die for....

  • Great job..

  • Fantastic! We never had trucks like that in the U.K. What I call a 'proper lorry' My '72 Atkinson can only boast a straight six David Brown.

  • im interested in learning that kind of transmission. nice video

  • Amazing

  • that looks like 2 stick H pattern.

  • I always liked the old B model 65 better than any other truck, even though they don't go very fast.

  • this is true,it won't set any speed records!

  • Pretty much the same as my Pete except the shifters are reversed. My main is next to me and my Aux is near the passenger.

  • I just want to say wow i have been driving for 27 years and aprox 2 million miles and i would be lost this is the only transmission i have never driven i have never been near one but im going to find one and a teacher thanx

  • You ain't kidding a bit bud. My pop has been driving since 79' and never touched one till he drove my 67' R611. He picked it up super quick. I suspect you'd do the same, be sure to post a video of you doing it.

  • You say growl, I say Grobble! Listen to that Mack grobble!

  • Two mack questions? Is this naturally aspiriated & Is this a triplex 5x3 transmission BTW this guy knows how to shift!

  • yes,it is naturally aspirated. It's a quadruplex,5 and 4,but it's shifted just like a triplex on the road. And thanks for the compliment,i'm not that good, don't get enough practice-that's why I shift one stick at a time,i'm subject to monkey up when I try the two-handed shifting, but it works well for me!

  • Hey do you know the overdrive howls those RTO 12513 trannys make? Do these howl like those old 13 speed roadrangers? Im like hooked on that for some reason.

  • All the years that I have been a driver,I have heard about these but have never seen anyone shift. Good vid.~thx.

  • just an 'ol 673 Mack Thermodyne with a straight pipe (no muffler)

  • That is a beautiful ride and sounds awesome! Thank you for posting this.

  • Can any body tell me what motor that is, it sounds great, would love to do an LT

  • sounding good there other listen to that ole Thermodyne Bark & Growl

  • Ya, sounds great. Love that exhaust note!

  • listen to that growl!

    Nice shifting by the way
