Sure it's a dumb attitude but the movie's about a screwed up young teenager from small-town Canada who's obsessed with Elvis and an imaginary vision of punk rock, "Disco sucks, kill all hippies" was a great rock & roll slogan for 1979.

I think that he still gets screenwriting credit on this although Hopper did a heavy rewrite.

The movie was recently reissued, maybe I shouldn't say recently but within the last 5 years, with a pretty indepth commentary by Hopper.

This film is more real than life, that's why is so depressing. There is a novel by Alberto Fuguet where Linda Manz is used as a reference. I don't know if the novel has been translated to english.

i've always found this "disco sucks" business to be very ironic. back in the day, the pop music critics who championed punk (christgau, ira robbins, etc.) also dug disco. and the really HIP people enjoyed listening to BOTH.....................
