  • Borosilicate glass (Pyrex) is designed not to shatter when the temperature changes suddenly.

  • I wonder how many pots he's had shatter while applying the wet towel?

DON'T DO WHAT THIS FOOL DOES!

  • @TexasCoffee none, Pyrex is designed to stand drastic temperature changes. I have the same equipment, never shattered a single pot... and i put the towel under the pot.. seriously.. just stick to gas station coffee.. so negative w/ ur comments...

  • the coffee looks so burned

  • It's because the heat lamp is orange. It's ironic that you think the coffee looks burnt because siphon coffee comes out cleaner than a French press and it doesn't have the Starbuck's burnt taste. Quite the opposite of how you perceive it.

  • That guy looks like he hates his life.

  • what kind of heat source is that?

  • Do they make coffee to order? like a la carte?

  • does anyone know why whenever I use one of these the bottom bowl always burns? i did everything the directions said.

  • so for real, is a siphon/vacuum cup of joe better than any other kind that is made right?

  • @DreamSeekerOne not better, just depends on your taste buds... it's all about quality of coffee and doing it right...

  • Great video. I went to the Blue bottle for the first time in San Francisco and enjoyed the coffee and experience. I didn't get the video but pictures. I agree with one of the comments that this one didn't show the measuring of the temperature of the coffee. I wonder did he forget or is it just something new that they have recently started.

  • He never metered the temp.

  • nice clean image , what recorder did you use ?

  • Guys, I think he's using a halogen lamp. Don't quote me, but im pretty sure. Makes it look cool huh? :)

  • c'est ou ?

  • what he is doing is wrong. he lets the water boil and then put on the top. that means he is putting boiling water on the coffee grounds. bad bad bad.

  • What kind of burner is that? I want to buy one

  • what is the name of the cafe?

  • @cjlowe1970 The name of this cafe is Blue Bottle Coffee. they are in San Francisco in three locations. this video was shot at the location near fifth and market. It is just off of Mint Plaza in a very non descript building. It is the only one that offers Siphon Pot Coffee. They make the best coffee on the planet. They also make an incredible Kyoto style drip coffee that taste like bourbon. It takes 18 hours to cold brew one pot. It is very very good and very unique

  • im using a gas burner to heat my siphon, what is heating element is this cos I wanna buy one like that....

  • @davedicko1983 did you find out? i want one too

  • I was a little freaked by the way the guy making it kept playing with the carafe, sticking his nose in it and such. Vacuum coffee is far better than the typical American-style automatic drip. I do second the aforementioned Aeropress, however I wouldn't put it above the vacpot; assuming you know how to use one properly.

  • never trust a sommelier who doesn't smell the wine. he was simply checking the quality of the brew, which he is responsible for. i also believe he was lowering the temperature of the carafe as he was holding the wet towel to the carafe.

  • This was discovered, accidentally, by early alchemists in an effort to transmute coffee into gold. While failing metallurgically it succeeded percolatorically, much to the enjoyment of future generations of caffeine connoisseurs.( Ok, none of that is true, and I am certain there are some English majors out there clawing their eyes out over some of the spelling. Sorry about that.)

  • Ahh humans! You blather on and on, and none of you know what you are talking about.

This is just glorified "vacuum" brewing that has been around for a long time. It's not the worst way to make coffee, but neither is it the best. The brew made this way tastes good, but not great. The problem is that the brewing time is too long. Anything over about 30 seconds or so starts to extract the acidic portion of the coffee.

    (cont. below)

  • (cont. from above)

I don' t understand the exact chemistry, but I do know that since I started drinking coffee only made two ways: with an Aeropress, or with a "real" espresso machine, I no longer have ulcer issues. (Do I need to describe the exact physical symptoms?)

  • ignorant fools..

  • That is about the most pretentious coffee I have ever seen! Do they make it with the beans that the civet eat and poop out too?

Eyerolling so bad it hurts. Going to drink a cup of Folger's now.

  • Obvious troll is obvious, it's a shame that you're just so bad, at life.

  • No, not trolling; I really think this is taking it a little too far. I hope that the people who buy it appreciate the theater involved, but ultimately it is little burnt beans in really hot water. I am just okay with the type I make at home. Disclaimer: I do own a french press, and I do think it improves the taste. :)

  • I can respect that you didn't retaliate in a way I thought you might; however, this behind the counter guy is doing it wrong. It's a lot quicker with good technique.

Secondly, Syphon Coffee is merely a different method of extracting coffee, from a different region of the world. It does come off as a little arrogant when you bash that fundamentally.

  • I owned a Bodum Santos electric and it made good coffee. Siphons are great to watch.

  • This isn't a new "fancy" way of making coffee. Siphon brewing has been around for years. It's just not that popular in the U.S.

  • drink up - you're paying for the lighting.

  • Look, I am quite the coffee connoisseur but it's starting to become a bit ridiculous. I've had coffee from the 30,000 (of is it 50,000?) dollar machine and it was NASTY. The guy tells me they used TRIPLE FILTERED water, blah, blah, blah...and it was MUCH worse than the shit I make at home.

All you need are decent beans, pure water and you're golden. Grab some Peace Coffee and roll, baby!

  • Gamelan!

  • Ah, the wonders of highschool science at work.

  • Hello, I am very interesting for siphon coffee.I want to try this.

Can you tell me how is the taste like?

    Thanks
