It's just old. Back when it was made around 20 years ago, it probably worked fine, but ion detectors don't age well.

Most System Sensor smokes are not UL listed as compatible with Simplex panels, so that's probably why.

It lets you reset the pull station with a key instead of the standard screw.
Great test! I don't like those ionization smoke detectors. They don't work too well in my opinion.
