  • not too sure but at 2:34 i think he does a mr p.c. reference??

  • from which concert is that?

  • haha they messed up the caption

  • Easy doing half a tone higher!!! Original is in Eb!!!

  • I think Lester Young might be a bit pist if he was known as Pork Pie Head - sounds like the hamburglar's cousin...

  • It's so sad he passed away so early, RIP!

  • @schimmelpenninq who? Dave Holland? he still alive.

  • @schimmelpenninq

Lester Young. Definitely the man! His WW2 experiences left him wounded and damaged spiritually, and he basically drank himself to death at 50.

  • @timebomb98765

    woops, I meant @littlebd7

  • Whoa, what happens to the sound at 2:50?

  • @desmuzik the mixing guy thoght it would be a great idea to add lots of ambience here and pulled it back when he realized what he did...TV...

  • white kaka

  • good by pork pie "head"? i dont think so....lol

  • Anyone know what the name of this video is or where I can find it? It looks like it was recorded off of the television

  • love this tune and beautiful rendering Mr Holland!

  • "Pork Pie Head," lol. Where did this take place?

  • the player is very cool...

  • Ok, bass players...tell me why the bridge on uprights is never stained to match the rest of the wood of the bass...and left so pale and lifeless...And I ain't buying that a little stain is going to mess with the sound transmission.

  • @sclogse1 We don't care. We just play the darn thing.

  • @sclogse1 the bridge is made out of a different wood and the stain would react differently to the how the stain reacts on the wood of the bass. Also alot of players like to change there bridge or if the bridge needs to be changed the same staining effect could not be applied to make it the same colour as the body

  • could someone please tell me what kind of tone this would be classified as? stringy? What?

  • The instument is refeerred to as many diff bass names, it is in fact a bass which does belong in the string famliy, produceing some of the lowest tones and has one of the lowest ranges.

  • uooooouu !!!!!!!

  • Charles Mingus Lives Again!!!!

  • Lester Young lives again

  • does anybody know where i can get an mp3 of this? pretty please?!!

  • well, the original and best version is on the actual minguis record itself. It's called Mingus Ah Um. GEt that album!

  • i'll try send you one if you provide your email-address.

  • @Sinisterfish Holland has a studio recording of this on the album "Ones All".

  • one of my all time fav bassists

one of his earlier recordings conference

    of the birds"(ecm)w/barry altschul/sam

rivers and anthony braxton is a killer

  • Magic, pure magic.

  • Dave Holland is one of the world's greatest jazz bassists without a doubt. Such sensitivity with power!

  • beautifull

  • Jazz Musician of the Year in U.S.A. we can hear why :) and he is not american!

  • My double bass teacher studied with Dave =D

  • Bravo

  • adoro Dave Holland e Mingus: insieme è il massimo!

  • i shook hands with dave holland once, in London after a gig with Kenny Wheeler... Chops like that produce a strangely steely but sensitive grip... it was an intense handshake thats all i gotta say..

RIP LESTER YOUNG AKA MR PORK PIE HAT

  • Youd have to have some pretty big balls to wAnna do solo upright gigs aye... Id be keen.

  • "it's a half step than the standard key, which is F. He is playing in E "

fojedason, that's because he wants to use open strings

  • he got powerful sound

  • Think I gots me a new transcription project. Thanks. :D

  • Wheres the pork pie?

  • since when do you have to pay royalties for playing a song?

  • The venue is responsible for buying a blanket license for the tunes played at the show. However, If you record (with intent to sell or distribute) more than six notes of a copyrighted tune then legally, you are required to purchase a mechanical license.

  • man I would love to ask you few questions if you don't mind/ you seem to know your music business realy well. How to copyright my Album if I'm with ASCAP? I will await your answer.

  • Woah,

    1:04 - 1:25 blows me away..

    so tasteful relaxed.

Dave Holland is the most groovin' bass player around.

  • what key does he play this in?

  • it's a half step than the standard key, which is F. He is playing in E

  • Dear Dave Holland,

    I want to be you.

    Signed, Me

  • @ElJuapeador Hahahahaha nice reponse!!! :):):)

  • Nice sound ... always from Dave ...

I played recently on this sort of bass ... and it's very nice .. if I would have 4-5000 doll ... I would buy it too.

  • Nothing states the farewell to the great Lester Young better the bottom sound of the bass. Thanks to Mingus for tune and only Holland is capable of such an authentic interpretation. Dave is a bad dude.

  • Just plain great, thank you for the post .

  • Awesome!

  • one of my alltime fav bassists

one of his earlier recordings 'conference of the birds" (ecm)w/barry altschul/sam rivers and anthony braxton is a killer

  • "Cabeza" de tarta de puerco xD

  • by calling it porkpie "head", he probably doesn't have to pay royalties.

  • He would still have to pay royalties because the tune is essentially unaltered, and therefore recognisable as Pork Pie Hat. My guess is that Pork Pie 'Head' is a feckless mistake on the part of the video editor.

  • I love this man. Brilliant!

  • porkpie head?

  • Dave holland is amazing check out his quintet its amazing

  • hes hella bad

  • LOL at pork pie "head"

  • Fantástico! Maravilhoso!

    Wow!
