  • Is "like" the right word for a song that puts such a lump in my throat?

    Yes. Yes it is.

  • i now how he felt

  • I think this is my favorite, if I could pick one. It was the first song I heard by him and I still get the same emotion that I did when I first heard it. I love it!

  • is there a non live version of this?

  • why does it matter so much that he refers to the speaker as a girl. just because he's singing the words does not mean he's singing as himself.

  • Saw Rufus with Martha at the Royal Opera House the other night. He sang this and absolutely blew me away. Just a gorgeous song and a gorgeous voice. Thanks R & M for a night to remember...

  • i dont think rufus used to be a girl.

  • @thecluster1 Lol my thoughts exactly.

  • i luv dis song!

  • you guys are stupid ! he's not gay or anything, he takes the girl's places only for the song...

  • @crazychics11 You are right, he is taking a different voice. But he is indeed gay.

  • @crazychics11 you're right that he takes the girl's voice for the song, but he is in fact gay. i think, literally everyone knows that.

  • When he says "just a girl" he might just talking about life as a gay man, and speaking about roles. For example some gay men look for stereotypical men and prefer to be the "girl" role.. not by actually pretending to be a woman, but more or less be the one who is cared for and protected by another strong partner figure. It can be why some men prefer to be thin and slender, and why some prefer to look butch, and muscular. Of course this isn't all gays, and it can sometimes be contradictory :)

  • So amazing, I was priviledged to hear him play this live.. and it was just..... wow... I can't describe it.... Thanks for posting!!!

  • wow i love this song. im playing it for my leaving cert in music (like the irish SAT's)

  • Thank you for posting

  • I wonder if its a true stroy. Thanks for the lyrics

  • @CartomartaKenDoll Rufus is pretty whacked, who knows? Thanks for watching ;)

  • @raykay77 as far as i know its not, it is based simply on the stories he was told by a male art teacher he befriended at a gym:)

  • @CartomartaKenDoll Actually, it's not a true story. I once listened to his commentary on the song and apparently he wrote it because he had met this cute art teacher and this was Rufus' way of flirting. The guy didn't get it though. lol

At least we got a wonderful song out of it all. ;)

  • @CartomartaKenDoll I read that he gained inspiration for the song from a friend of his who is a teacher. :D

  • @CartomartaKenDoll

well, he says "i was just a girl then"

    so i'm guessed no?

unless good old rufus got a sex change

  • @bjv19 maybe that's how he feels about himself!

  • @CartomartaKenDoll well, he is openly gay... sooo... this song very well could be about him

  • @CartomartaKenDoll : no, he said that he wrote this story after meeting an art teacher at the gym, and he was very popular among his female students :)

  • @CartomartaKenDoll for some people yes it is a true story

  • @CartomartaKenDoll He wrote it after making friends with someone who happened to be an art teacher, and told Rufus of how he had to deal with student's having crushes on him apparently :P

  • Thanks :] Awesome song, love rufus. <3

  • @Cabieeee Thanks for watching! I love Rufus also ;)
