  • Wow, this is awesome, very powerful statement in affirmation of life itself.

  • Or maybe each of the 3 ppl have decided to commit suicide. However, while thinking up ways to kill themselves, they find solutions to the problem that was leading them resort to suicide & change their minds. The superhuman feats may be a representation of avoiding suicidal thoughts. Or maybe they find the answer in the middle of the suicide attempt and the escape from death is a wish / regret / change of mind. They have decided not to die in the middle of suicide - but is it too late?

  • Each of the 3 ppl seem to have the superhuman ability to levitate which allows them to escape otherwise deadly situations. The woman doesn't drown and the 1st guy avoids the cars. Working in this frame of reasoning, if the 2nd guy jumps through the window, and he has also decided not to die, then he too can levitate. We are left to imagine him flying to safety from a fall that would mean death for a normal person. Maybe the question is how we can do the impossible, succeed when all seems futile

  • It was pleasant to watch, and interesting.

Can anyone honestly say this is any worse than things like "Real House Wives" or "Bridezilla"? At least this makes you think.

  • Perhaps it's art because the point is up to the viewer to decide. Your not forced to think, you want to think

  • you know i can't grasp the point of this video i know its supposed to be art but still its very random

  • You're a tool if you believe you can pass this as real art. Even the description can't define it properly. This is NOT a triptych and it is NOT burnished. It may be surreal, but the scenes do not depict a ritualistic world in any form. Maybe the symbolism is too "high brow" for my objective mind, but I completely fail to see the motive here. Just more hipster humanist garbage.

  • I understand this video, I still think it was lame.

  • connecting exhilaration about "something so beautiful as this video" with a resentment toward the "idiots that can barely speak english" lead to fascism for which i have no patience. Keep your disgust for yourself and think carefully about the consequences of it before your share it with us. Beauty which require protection of people like you is worthless.

  • it is kind of an obscure clip... that woman rises out of the pool, which is next to the ocean, that can be interpreted... the man jumping away and in time from those black cars... but reviewing the same clip of the last person who jumps but without us seeing what happens is strange, i find it goes against the purpose of the video... he still jumps, it's just that the result is hidden, but the fact is that he still went with it...

  • Im not so sure what it is all about, but a form of people who commit suicide is reflected in this.

  • Don't totally get it but so what.

Its really really good and it still holds up - 10 years later.

  • that was amazing

I love how u can have so many thoughts on the same clip.. everyone that has an imagination can see something different.

  • this reminded me of a lady gaga music video....

    thats saying something.. ):

  • Daniel Askill = Danny McAskill?

  • High building glass doesnt break like shit and When you suicide through the glass like that. Why would you protect your face like that?

  • the guy runs like a fag

  • i didn't get it

  • amazing video , very original , fresh and imaginative. Great job !

  • None of them die. They've decided against it.

I hate seeing something so beautiful as this video and the comment section be full of idiots that can barely speak english, let alone give a review in any legible tone.

    You people disgust me.

  • Can i just say, how do you actually know it doesn't hurt to fall from a height and "Instantaneously die. I just dont see how you can know.

  • I just noticed that I had to close my mouth.

    And start blinking again.

  • must art have a point? this is beautiful...

  • B E A U T I F U L

  • very cool

  • Good work. Don't considere some of these critics: they don't know about they speak...

  • ... they don't know about they speak? the hell?

  • sadly this isn't good enough for neotex555

    what a shame

personally i think that this is extremely hard hitting and does precisely what it set out to achieve

    very well done

  • well, is just my opinion. Yes, isnt good enough for me but its not a big deal, everyone take this like an offence. dont know why, i thnk a lot other videos from futureshots are great.

this for me is little pompous

So whats yout opinion? i mean, whats this short trying to say anyway? whats the message (or the hidden message)? for me is kind of pointless

in my chanel, in the animation section theres some videos i considerer very good ones (this is not spam just sharing and i want opinions too)

  • Well, i dont like too much, that voice saying "ashhhhh", is awful, and the last boy, when he pulls out of the building he puts his hands in front of his face, he shouldnt do it. if he can survive (or rewind his life) from more than 10 floors, why he has to cover his face?

    ridiculous

  • well thats probably becouse broken glass in the eyes, uh... hurts maby......

  • a&%!?ahh.. but he is going to fall more than 30 fucking floors, so what does it matter his face?, and thats not agree with the title of the clip, he doesnt "decide not to die", HE DOES!!!, uhhhh, bululuuuuuuuuu, jeje, surrealistic pillow!!

  • How do you know he does?

  • again, if he decides not to die, then he can fly (so he wont die, and thats not the tittle of the short) or rewind his life. In this two cases why he cares about glasses? i think he should break the glasses without covering his face, like a wizard flying close to the floor (with his hands close to her body)

  • it's common for people with glasses to actually remove them before committing suicide, which there's obviously no point in doing. its just oddities of humanity, we don't want to endure pain. falling from a building probably wouldn't be horribly painful anyways, since it'd be instant upon impact

  • yes, you have a point, but he is not committing suicide, cause he decide not to die, i mean, thats the tittle (again dont know how is going not to die, cause he is in-the-middle-of-the-air, so the last one actually decide to die -or, again, he can fly-) but yes, if he is going to die (so the tittle is wrong for last character) maybe he can cover his face, but i woundt do it, is just pointless like being discussing this anyway, but is pointless probably cause the arguement of video is pointless

  • he might die, but he doesn't 'die' in the movie (when the camera is rolling)

  • well, not for veronika. :D

  • yeah its the trailer...

it's more about the three stages: birth (chick in the pool) life (dude with the cars) and death(guy jumping out a whatever story building window). amazing cinematography if you can get a dvd hold of it, the director daniel askill is doing heaps of stuff, he's done a video for digitalism and an ad for dior! pretty cool

i'm pretty sure this was filmed in north sydney but i dunno, anyone know for sure?

  • I like this, but it looks like the trailer for a longer piece.

  • It is the trailer for the complete film!

  • I don't understand this, can someone explain? :P

  • This entire film is available on DVD now in the U.S., as part of the compilation THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SHORTS, from New Yorker Video. (You can see the trailer here on YouTube.)

  • extraño... weird... creepy... love it

  • Wow... this sure is wierd.

Has it something to do with breaking through barriers of one's mind? Have to undergo transitions in order to see the new reality from a different perspective? or am I just full of bullshit?

He's trying to show his spiritual identity.

  • does have an impact

  • I saw it on a theatre

    amazing visual effects

    love it

  • this is a short version of the short film

  • Superficial rubbish that thinks it is profound.

  • I think this short could take on many different meanings based on one's own life experience and thought process. it could be that these were all a look into an indivual'm mind where that individual acted out a suicide attempt in mind only. It could be a glimpse into an action which prevents us from doing the same.

  • What part of that was pointless? That was remarkable. Both content and form alike.

  • 5 stars.

  • Good Work

  • half the people will like it ... half will hate it (and they dun bother to rate..)

nice effects.. but kinda pointless.. just pure effects..

  • good effects and i liked the slow, heavy breathing, make more please

  • good efects :) and really great ideas.

  • I like the black cars and the girl's bathing suit looked cool.

    That's it.

  • that was pointless nice camera work though

  • Do "they" make that decision?

  • wow

  • it freaked me out a little at first with all the loud breathing, but then i understood it and it didn't freak me out at all after that...great video

  • interesting

  • Well, that is peculiar.

    But an excellent point, nonetheless.

  • The first time I came across this I wasn't really paying attention and I didn't get it's meaning. So, of course, I thought I knew it all already. But that last frame "We Have Decided Not To Die" is so powerful that it literally took my breath away.

    Beautifully made point.

  • I feel like I just watched a commercial for a new perfume.

  • ending it is never the solution. its years of knowladge lost; a ended story. recognise the beauty in things, whatever it is to keep you going, wether its a flower, the breeze, life should keep going and not cut off short. this is a good video

  • i agree

  • well put, S-man's req. All our stories have something of value. There is something about listening to someones story that can be cathartic to both the teller and listener.

    Powerful Short. peace

  • very deep meanings.. great!

  • fdasfdsa

  • perfect <3

  • very good ,great work

it just imagine work, don't think about

Science theory or religion for talkwar

  • idl dat vid .. dem ppl looked crazy az heck but iima u kno , imma tryna look @ it again u kno

  • Dear Loser,

It does. It's just stupider than the common sense out there.

  • very cool

  • Excellently made, good points, loved the reverse effect of what life should be and not what its end will be and the outcome of such a decision. Great stuff!

  • wow that was awesome

  • Maaybe it's saying ... we make the choice to live or die and we (the ones watching this) have chosen not to die. Either way - it makes you think. :)

  • "We have decided not to die." Wow, wish I had thought of that. Maybe it's cause I'm just an old bacwards-ass country bumpkin, but I really don't get it. Nice effects, but I wish the author would explain...but maybe that's the point!

  • Unfortunately, posting these kinds of things on the internet do affect young people and are influenced by shootings and even jumping out windows. I personally know of 2 college kids who thought the glass would hold them and jumped to their death. Be responsible and think before posting! Please!

  • i don't want to sound cruel or anything but if people are dumb enough to even contemplate what you have just alluded to then...it's a pity but why should it effect everyone else's choice in media? quite frankly though i believe you are talking crap...thankyou for reading :)

  • @poisedyeti The people that contemplate this are not stupid, but have mental disorders such as depression that bring them to this. I have depression.

  • Be responsible and don't try jumping through glass you "THINK" might hold you. OMG, THEY jumped to THIER death, and that seems like Darwin's theory playing out just like he described. No ones fault but theirs' especially since who in college would do that? What college was it? Clown College?

  • Oh, and as for the video, it seems like a show of special effects with no heart, and message I dont get. Sorry but I dont really like it, but I do wonder if the dude jumping as the cars hit each other would be possible to do in real life, but i'd never try it. If you wait long enough you'll see someone on YouTube try it for you.

  • What's the point here?

  • I would try smashing through a plate glass window and jumping to my death but I think the glass is tempered to withstand my velocity and weight. It would hurt. I'd not succeed. It would suck. But here I can pretend this guy did it. WE are able to do that by a process know as 'suspension of dibelief'.

  • Mmm a bit too slick for my liking. Looks like an advertisement for a mobile phone or expensive vehicle. The characters are too emotionless, makes it hard to become involved on any level.

  • i dont really like it

  • Maybe now you can see how the title, "We Have Decided Not To Die" applies to the video.

  • To me, it seems like the first women's death get's reversed. Like undoing a bad decision.(maybe it is showing symbolically her choosing not to die)

Then, the young guy narrowly escapes being smashed; he jumps to avoid the pinch of the cars. (he chooses not to die)

Finally, the shirtless boy jumps out the window, and it cuts right before he falls to his death. (perhaps he is choosing not to die, but it's just a little bit too late)

  • Maybe now you can see how the title, "We Have Decided Not To Die" applies to the video.

  • ..?

  • i liked the car crash, there should be a "DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME" message. i can do that and get hurt, then sue you..

  • umm ok and... you should kno not to that its comon sence

  • load of shit

  • i almost think it seems to accidentally promote suicide or perhaps death. not on purpose, but in the description "characters appear to float free of space and time." is like showing in death you are free, you float in space and time. throughout the amazing scenes no one was upset? but seemed contented, and relaxed, perhaps even happy?

    just an opinion :)

  • I want the last minute of my life back... what a waste.

  • wow brilliant

    just amazing!

  • :S

    wtf?

wuts the meaning of this nonsense?

  • Wow. Ya, I think that this vid is promoting life and determination to not give up. Very powerful vid guys - great job.

  • i think its about suicide n they all desided not to die, who knows

  • amazing! thats kind of film ive always dreamed of making, but...im having trouble understanding the message... =\

    i agree with stephenetienne

  • Amazing, unnervingly dreamlike and thought provoking. Excellent!

  • Sometimes there is no direct point.

    Be Well.

  • i dont got it...

  • I don't got it either.

  • cool...deep...but to deep for me......?

  • stupid, pointless, go die.

  • The look and sound of the video were neat, but what's the point of the video? Are the characters suicidal, but changing their minds at the last minute? I don't really like this video. It's not "surreal", it's just fake. You don't float out of a pool of water, nor do you float above cars as they crash, not do you float if you would jump out of window. This video is a bad message. Humans do not float out of danger.

  • but did you realize he captured someone jumping out of a window, and someone jumping above the cars, the water was simple just hit rewind, but he has reeeally good grafics, im sure it took a long time to make this

  • Jumps are visual effects. Good ones.

Nice short but the point of the story is pretty blury. An end is really missing here.

  • It's in slow motion and rewinded.

  • We know that. What is the message in the video? It seems like these suicidal people are changing their minds at the last minute and unrealistically floating out of danger. It's a bad message.

  • I'm not questioning his technique or that it took time and effort to make. I'm questioning what the story means. It seems to make an unrealistic point visually.

  • Maybe it shows that that will never come true no matter how much you want it to. Basicaly; "Don't commit Suiside or you'll regret it at the last moment"

  • apologies for posting that 2x

  • DAMN!

  • HOOOOOLY POO THAT WAS CRAZY STUFF. Awesome work.

  • wtf?
