Holy shit! This is without a doubt my favorite Neil Young song!! Beautiful man!! Lyrics, music, pure rock n roll, pure strength! Straight from the river of music that flows through all our souls! Neil simply reach into the river and caught a beauty with his bare hands and presented it to the world! Sorry PETA no catch and release necessary this one is already free!
dorthey chander pavillion, a long time ago neil blew our ears out..... was any body else there?1980-1982. It was originally going to be a stills/young concert.
The drummer is much too loud! There is a "tenderness" to this song that is missing. Listen to the live rust version and you'll hear what ai am talking about.
Neil uses fender deluxe 5e3 model tweed ( modified for 6L6 power tubes instead of 6V6 power tubes)in the studio and fender deluxe, magnatone 280 and a baldwin exterminator on stage!!.. Gibson les paul standard 1953 with firebird pick up on the bridge and P90 neck + Bibsby vibrato...The vibrato is very important for Neil sound.
he uses an old tweed fender deluxe and the all the whizzer does is turn the pots. if youve got a fender amp then you can probly come somewhat close to his sound. its not unachievable, just difficult
I don't know alot about guitar technology, but from what I gather; achieving a certain sound on a guitar, (like the sound from echoes in "Live at pompeii") depends on a whole host of things such as type of strings, exact type of guitar, wood the neck is made out of, which pick is selected, your amp, feedback, etc, ect.
I've heard a hell of alot of imitators (of PF at least) & so far NOBODY has achieved either of these sounds.I'd like to see someone try though!
granted some things, such as a players touch and personal feel/phrasing cannot be duplicated, but you said its unachievable because of his amps, and the whizzer, the whizzer has nothing to do with the sound neil makes, its merely a mechanical device.
That's why I also said, "I don't know alot about guitar technology". I know a players touch and personal feel make a difference, but its more than that. That does not not explain for the actual general sound. I'm talking about the actual 'sound'. Do you know what it is that makes the sound so unique??
the sound is just a culmination of several factors, a 1953 les paul thats been modified, an an old fender deluxe amp, and some older stomp boxes are what makes up the general sound. check around on the web and youll find all the information on his guitars and amps.
pardon my ignorance, it was a complete tour called "rusted out garage" because I have a showtime (I think) video and a 2 cd set of the soundboard from COW PALACE, SAN FRANCISCO, november 21, 1986

Yeah, he uses some special amp and a whizzer. Inotherwords its unachievable with your own guitar.
Check out the Ahoy 2009 version on youtube. You should get to like it.
