It's nice to have that for an actual game PC. I'm stuck at 4GB RAM since I have 32-bits Windows 7. If I would have had 64-bits, I would also be at 16GB RAM for what you call a home PC. I already have a core i3 2,93 GHZ and a 1,5GB Nvidia GeForce 9600 GSO. My next PC is going to be a real monster. If you want to do some actual gaming, meaning that you want to play the heaviest games for your PC out there on the market, I suggest you upgrade your hardware or buy a new PC.

Having that much memory might be usefull if you plan at running 8 games in the background, or run a heavy virtualization server. The main bottleneck with games is the videocard, not the ram.
