Too bad the dumb police are more concerned about people going 40 in a 25 mph zone that should be 40 anyway...instead of people not using their turn signals and tail gating.
In California many people don't want to use their signals. If you turn them on, the people in the lane you want to go into will speed up so as to close up the room you were going into so that you will not get in ahead of them! You use to use them so that people would give you more room and be aware you were changing lanes. People now use their cars as a game- ME FIRST - GOT YOU.
@amtpdb1 I hate that. You have to act like you don't want the spot and act casual, then speed up and force your way in. I use the turn signal at the last second for that very reason.
Talk about problems. A few days ago a guy was way behind me & going SLOW. For some reason he got mad when I changed into his lane- sped up & began road-raging me. Rush hr traffic was starting, when he angrily tried to go around me i wouldn't let him in. He got stuck & got further behind. I was amused.
Long time issue, that's long time overdue to correcting. That as well as how a driver is so easily issued in this State. Then you have all these people get on the roads, and show how poorly they can drive and I have to deal with them. CHP is almost never there.
This is a good reason to drive with a video recorder front side and rear facing so you capture every bad driver who causes an acciedent. lets get the justice!
Ok uh...I hate it when people don't use their turn signals too and think it's ridiculous. That being said, at :45 when everyone is turning without a signal, they really don't have to use it since that's the only place they can legally go. It doesn't really make sense to let everyone know that you're NOT going to do something crazy and break the law by veering into another lane. I asked a few cops about this one time and they both said they wouldn't nab someone for it.
I will give you that, the main issue with people changing lanes without signaling or are in a lane where they can go straight or right and don't signal.
Then you have those who are totally in their own little world, and just drift from lane to lane.......
i put on my signals when i see there are cars around me.. when im by myself on the road, who will i signal for anyways (and i know its the law, but ima take my chances lol)
Oh no! They didn't use a blinker to merge onto the highway! How on earth would you ever know what they were going to do? Just drive straight? or make a right turn? Big deal
I live in the suburb of Chicago for 15 years and drove often in the city. Moved here 5 months ago to the Bay Area and I can tell you it's much worse here with people not using turn signal. It's like they don't know there is such a function in the car. I drive on El Camino for about 10 minutes only every day and that's enough to drive me crazy.
And a side question, is it legal for bicyclist to ride over pedestrian cross walk? I frequently see bikers zooming out of nowhere across crosswalk.
Bicyclists are required to follow the same laws as motorists, although in reality it's difficult to constantly stop and start on a vehicle with no motor (especially when you're using toe clips), so I think bicyclists should be left alone unless they're being reckless about it.
You said "signal their intent". I guess you know it's ONLY a forewarning of the obvious. I only signal when others might truly want to see it. When making turn at a green arrow, I have all the right of way so I don't use it. When people signal to turn into a driveway the rear driver should be far away so as to not slow down so much thus the signal is not working for stupid.
@TheGreatCorneliuski: Is your reluctance to use your turn signal due to that you're car will start rusting or will explode or melt or change colors or develop a bad smell or start using more gas or will have an electrical short or start to leak oil or crack your windshield or (insert milliions of other possibilities) IF YOU USE YOUR TURN SIGNALS?
I constantly see people not signaling when they should, and it drives me crazy. I you are changing lanes, why would you signal, turn off the turn signal, and then change lanes? To me this means you changed your mind and arent moving over. The worst ever was where the road split into 3 lanes, 1 for turning left, 1 for right and 1 for straight. He signalled a left turn, stayed in the center lane and turned right.
That's a problem in San Diego too, and I never see people making turn signals when entering or exciting the freeways, except commercial vehicles, and busses.
Okay, I've discovered a way to get the state government out of debt: There's no need to raise income taxes, just issue tickets to people who refuse to use their turning signals!
Don't even pull people over, just have police cars recording videos like these and get driver's license plates and give them a ticket by mail. Also issue multiple citations for one person for each turn. :P
Wouldn't it be easier to signal as a habit? I mean, I'm lazy sometimes but it's a stick only 2 inches from your hand. I find that much easier than following a huge list of rules for reasons to use it. Oh and I've noticed a growing number of people like myself. Sometimes, I'll hover in your blind spot, if you signal I'll slow down and let you in, if you don't... well the lesson starts. How else are the lazy going to learn? And I could use that new plasma & surround system ;-)
I think it's stupid to require people to use their turn signal once in a must-turn lane, and my guess would be that cops have better things to do than ticket people who fail to signal in those situations. For lane changes, however, I use turn signals mainly for my own protection: it's sometimes easier to see a flashing light than the car it's attached to.
FWIW, where I live, the police are as casual about signaling as everyone else is—maybe even more so.
I've heard other people argue that signaling is unnecessary if you're in a must-turn lane, but I respectfully disagree. Don't forget, it's not just other drivers who need to know what you intend to do with your vehicle; it's pedestrians too. I think it's unfair to require peds to get down and check under your car to see if there's a large "left turn" arrow or something painted on the pavement. In light of how mind-blowingly easy it is to put your blinker on, why not err on the side of courtesy?
I agree with all of this except complaining about people who don't use signals in a left turn only lane. If you have to get out of your current lane to enter one then yes, you should use it.
But if your lane turns into a left turn only lane, I don't give a damn if you don't. If you can't understand where the guy is about to go, you shouldn't be driving. If the guy goes anywhere but left, then no ammount of signaling will make it legal :P
THANK GOD FOR THIS CLIP! I live in Chicago and only 2 out of 5 drivers here use them! It's insane. Nothing make me madder than the general public's failure to have basic consideration for one another. No wonder our society is so messed up - people choose to be inconsiderate.
Chicago traffic is the WORST! There are probably more people with a working Betamax than there are people who signal. Red lights and stop signs are virtually optional; after the left-turn arrow goes red, six more cars just turn anyway, and you can do it all in front of Police without getting a ticket. Unless you don't have a city sticker. They have a tracking device to find those people.
this video is right on the nose :) i deal with this crap everyday. how hard is it to use your signal??? are we paying by the signal now? sigh
