I don't know about 1954 but 1996 was a definate key point in time when the uaw lost GM in Flint. I know for a fact that back in the mid to late 70's a family member would go in to gm clock in then leave and go home and mow his lawn then sit around his yard drinkin beer all day.
Well.., in 2008, on GM's centennial, it wasn't trumpeted, but low key, as if the giant knew what was around the corner. In 2009, GM filed for bankruptcy... and it killed Saturn, Hummer, and venerable Pontiac. Olds was killed off in 2002... How the mighty had fallen a little over 50 years later!~
