  • All through the media exam, I had this song in my head. :')

  • i didn't understand the communicating brand values question :S

  • Notice how she is wearing red in every shot. This possible represents warmth, like motherly, and possibly seual attraction.

  • That was such a nice exam compared to some of the mocks, thanks John Lewis.

  • @WhatWouldPotterDo Amazing that an advert which caught popular attention could end up in a contemporary test. Education is becoming more real!

  • @wjr1ftkt grow up

  • this advert was just used for AQA Media Studies AS... just thought id let yall know ;) was too easy!

  • @RoomAFK Was it fuck easy! I thought it was hard, but i still think i got an A or B. What did you do your case study on?

  • @tantrumnikki007 at the end the premier inn advert starts before the clip finishes:)

  • Lenny henry spoiled my sentimental moment :-\

  • Man, the last frame of this video freaked me the fuck out.

  • it's almost the same ad as "Calzedonia - hose and socks commercial" even same concept and song! What the hell...

  • 9 people have never met that woman...

  • 5 people have never met that woman...

  • What I find amazing, is that this woman has managed to live her whole life in modern day england.

  • its actually quite sad-

  • Aww, that advert was just so beautif..AGHH LENNY HENRY!

  • 1:29 is the best bit.

  • nice nice nice

  • WARNING!

    black guy at 1:30!!

  • this is the most depressing ad I've ever seen

  • I feel that the message of the advert is that at the end of your life, when all is said and done; you turn into Lenny Henry.

  • @marcuscleaver fucking LOL

  • @marcuscleaver Truth be told, I would be pretty okay with that.

  • Why are american women permitted to go outside the house and even smile and laugh in front men? This is very disturbing...

  • what a brillian advert this is

  • lol @ lenny henry at the end

  • a womans life should be this long in real life lol

  • hate this advert, makes life look as though it is over in a flash

  • @Cozzi0 It isn't?

  • I love this song, they should have used the Billy Joel original, I hate cover versions. Did you spot the politically correct bit in the commercial? :-)

  • Why does have the world have to psycho analyse everything these days? It's depressing! The song says what all men know we can't live with them but we cannot live without them. It's a love song for goodness sake now get over it and go and mow the grass or something....strewth!!!!

  • I love this add its so nice :)

  • i love this advert, its basically my life

John Lewis born and bred :)

  • Fyfe Dangerfield shouldn't have touched this song. He doesn't add anything to the original and he sings it like he doesn't understand what he is singing. As for the 'new market' argument: People that don't want to see (or listen to music) beyond their own noses, don't deserve to know the songs outside of the mainstream. Let oldies be oldies, let musicians flaunt with their own plumes.

  • What a load of aspirational middle class poo

  • Singers today are so lazy. If Fyfe Dangerfield had written and sung this song I would have total respect for him. All he has done is something a million other people on the planet can do, he copied a classic song from the 70s or 80s. Listen to the original version of this classic song sang by Billy Joel in 1977. Billy Joels version is far superior then Fyfe's COPY.

  • lol

lenny henry right at the end :)

  • Yet another well-manufactured ad that attempts to subvert the general populous into spending 80% of their hard-earned income at Lewis's on stuff they will never actually need.

The song is quite good though.

  • very similar to italian spot of "calzedonia" (search "calzedonia - sorelle d'italia). Italian are too original, english can just copy us :-)

  • Search video "Calzedonia 2006", is the same!

  • My favourite bit is the 1 second of Lenny Henry looking mental at the end of the recording at 1:25. The divorce has hit him hard

  • A clear plagiarism of a 2007 italian tv ad by calzedonia

    watch?v=MoG2jWZZkc4

    it's f silly.

  • I HATE THIS ADVERT

  • Yes she's obviously middle class ! She grows up, goes to school ! Wait for the shocking part ! "she gets married" has a family (not in the wrong order I assure you) retires, for the people that are unsure of retirement, its some you do after you have worked all your life. Come on people it's an advert, and if it doesn't make you shop at john lewis, just enjoy the song! As the avert puts into perspective life is to short

  • LOL lenny henry :')

  • I love this advert. The meaning of the song doesn't go with the advert but it's a beautiful song and the sound goes.

  • To all the Moms. Happy Belated Mother's Day.

  • pretty much sums up everything I hate about the middle classes

  • And at the end of the heart-breaking sentiment.... a glimpse of the crazy balck man from the Halifax advert. Love it.

  • Something about this advert makes me want to go on a rampage.

  • Aimed squarely at Middle Class white women, got to love the political correctness squeezed towards the end

  • @giddeo too far lol. your making a big deal because there's a white woman in an advert? i think the fact that your complaining is slightly more racist than not using someone of another ethnicity. and what working class person would shop in john lewis :L it's as dear as fuck lol. so yea, i can't see your problem

  • I love Fyfe Dangerfield and the ad is so beautiful.

  • haha i love lenny henry at the end

  • LOVE.

  • i love this advert so much

  • My favourite advert at the moment

  • wooo lenny henry :L:L:L <3

  • @sallyumbo that`ll be lenny henry

  • Do they have John Lewis in hell? Cos that's where she is now. :-(

  • nice advert.

  • the fat evil bitch just looks like her mother, and it turns out she even had sex with her brother,so you spend all your days doing drugs and heavy drinking ..cos when you get home you know she will just kick your head in..and you wonder how long you will get for her murder....she,s always a woman to me la laa la la laa.......

  • @tigerhorsefield nice 1

  • Absolutely fantastic - one of the best adverts I have ever seen !!

  • The lyrics describe a cold loveless bitch, whose happy moments in life can be distilled into 90 seconds. The real life message of John Lewis, is hate her, but don't divorce her. You'll have to buy seperate sofas, water jugs, kitchen sets, for two seperate homes. And that means your going to have to economise and buy your goods from Argos or some other shit place for Proles. The quality of John Lewis is all that holds the fragile marriage together in the modern era. IN UNITY WE BUY QUALITY.

  • @gruffp I salute you sir!

  • @gruffp wow your really smart! i love your comment i completely agree :)

  • @gruffp nice one

  • @gruffp tha'ts hilarious

  • They missed out the bit when she was a five dollar hooker !

  • @passingc ...''five dollars''she charged me two pound fifty...think you got robbed mate

  • I GOT GOOSEBUMPS!!

  • @misslockstock i feel sick

  • Great video lawl

  • why do people find this so awsome. the iron brew ad is better

  • If you like this, why not listen to the original version, written and performed by Billy Joel. Then, as you are hooked, listen to

    She's Got A Way

    Vienna

    Just The Way You Are

    Summer, Highland Falls.

ALL WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY BILLY JOEL

  • Nicely shot video but totally inappropriate use of this beautiful song and lyric. Billy Joel wrote this song after the break up of his first marriage as a damning indictment of her duplicity. In fact Billy Joel now refuses to perform this song. People oftem claim to love this song without realising what it is saying, I think John Lewis fall in to this category. Billy Joel told USA Today in JUne 2008 "To me it's a very simple understandable lyric, 'She may be that to you, but she's this to me"

  • is that lenny henry whited up and blacked up. WTF!

  • is that Lenny Henry whites up and then blacked up. WTF!

  • lmfao at the end though

  • @GuysSeriously a pound of veg you say?? i'd ike some potatoes please

  • they should of made it a bit more realistic, i.e sniffing solvents, failing exams, a few months on the dole, getting a crap job in the office, both the man and women cheating on each other, bringing up a couple of spoilt moaning kids, then getting mugged as they walk through the park

  • I'M A LESBIAN, BUT JOHN TOUCHED ME!

  • This is a rip-off of a television ad created for FastWeb (Italian internet provider) made in the 90's- It's the exact same but goes through a mans life and uses a GreenDay song- COPYCATS!

  • @monkeysee1000 I didn't know that. Thanks

  • i dont understand why she wears something red all the way throu gh, what does it represent? x

  • @xXTillyTotsXx So people understand it's the same woman they are watching, at different times in her life.

  • lenny len, lenny lenny henry lmao xxx

  • lovely advert

  • woo this has a boy in my class in it!

  • Of course there is another side to women:

She'll screw and divorce you and in court on the day

She will happily take all your children away

She will make the kids hate you and then take your house

Beware of the rat who just looks like a mouse

She is only a woman to me.

  • This version of the song is by The Guillemots.

  • brought a tear of two to my eye...brilliant!

  • This only had 300 views on Sunday. News spreads fast.

  • Find and like the Always a woman John lewis advert :) on FACEBOOK

  • i want to go to a travel lodge now

  • Absolute crap! ruined a good song here!!!

  • First time Ive seen this but theyve just ripped of the first 10 minutes of "UP"!!

  • if i was an American CEO i'd pay millions for the rights to this

  • Lenny henry just made me piss myself laughing! HAHA HILARIOUS :D

  • @Togepi271 - My 15% bonus says otherwise!

  • Ahh I Really Like This Advert :]- The Song Is Really Nice :]

  • haha omg i missed lenny henry first few times, and didnt know what people were on about, but then i saw and ahahahah

  • She has a job, she is "nobody's fool" and can "wound with her eyes". Really, the ad doesn't make any sort of anti-feminist statement. Just because she gets married in no way implies that any man has control over her or her actions. Besides, look how happy she is!

  • @Techgril thats true, some men control the women when married some women control the men! and some couples still lead separate lives but are happily married, everyones different its as long as your happy that counts.

  • @Techgril SO agreed. Anyone who says women who choose- CHOOSE- to get married and raise children are anti feminist are being anti femninist themselves, it's just another way to limit women.

  • @Techgril the lyrics of the song are about how she manipulates the man :L

  • @FutureForHope I realise this, but surely this shows she's hardly a submissive little wall flower as some people seem to be suggesting x

  • @Techgril exactly, she's the exact opposite. the man's her bitch

  • @FutureForHope

    it's not actually.

joel wrote it for his then wife, who cleared up all his finaces and stuff after he'd been having trouble. people called her a ruthless business woman. because of the fact she seemed as tough as nails, many people called her unfemine, but to billy she was always a woman.

basically, he loves her despite all her exterior coldness/hardness.

its a pretty beautiful ballad when you actually listen to it properly.

    :)

  • trying to be passionate about one of the most mundane shops around... let's quit this soppy bullshit shall we?

  • @T800System mundane yes, but their model of business is very interesting.

Every sales assistant, clerk, etc. gets a share of the business so when JL does well, they do well. Have you ever noticed how friendly the assistants are? It's because they get paid more if more people return to the shop, giving it better profits. It's working too. Communism within capitalism

  • @AndrewerdnAndrew Actually I notice they can't be bothered to serve you at all or display even common curtsey and politeness in the branches I go to - they are 'in charge' not one can reprimand them and they are going to let you know.

Great advert, good products but soviet style consumer care.

  • @DavidBee70 its a dept store they sell everything

  • that must of taken along time.

  • They forgot the death at the end...

  • A good advert with a clear message!

I always buy most of my tech stuff, such as tv's from john Lewis and have used the under sale guarantee before and it works, got a £800 TV for £500 with no hassle once they checked the other sellers price was valid.

Also there warrantees are good and they even swapped my dads old 32" crt for a HD lcd panel when no other replacement was available.

  • haha. lenny henry?! but yeh, quality advert to be fair:)

  • lol the ending

  • this is how adverts should be, not annoying like most of them!

  • @sanaabanana87

    here here

  • What's with Lenny at the end? It's gas!

  • It's good but depressing!

  • @ChibiCandi I agree, anything which looks like someone is ageing quickly is very depressing! Like that guy who took a picture of himself every day for 6 years

  • Brilliant

  • I wonder how much the actual advert cost to make... obviously it's quoted for the campaign as being £6 mill but that's probably more for ad slots than the advert itself!...?
