  • When on the offensive, it's usually not a good idea to split up your army unless it's absolutely necessary. It's difficult to communicate and, therefore, coordinate. Soldiers are also much more disciplined and brave when they are part of a large force.

Defenders who are trapped are much better fighters. Sun Tzu says you should always leave your enemy with a path to retreat through. Then they can be routed.

  • @KayBeeEee1983 these were people who stood in straight lines and shot at each other, they knew as much about warfare as a Tibetan monk >.>

  • @kervin1693 That's how battles were fought back then. Commanders couldn't control their men if they were spread out.

  • @KayBeeEee1983 Thats what jr officers are for. Commanders still cant directly control all their men on a battle field, even with faster than light communication. They were more than capable of guerrilla warfare then, they simply made the choice to fight with "honor" and shoot at each other in straight lines.

  • @kervin1693 Smoothbore muskets are not very effective in guerilla fighting.

One of the big problems in civil war battles was that there were so many men their commanders couldn't coordinate them.
