  • Thai elephants are tamed in a ceremony called the Phajaan, they are deprived of food, water &sleep and are poked and proded with bamboo sticks with nails imbedded in the end, knives and are also shot with stones and other projectiles. This is meant to break the spirit of the elephant. After Phajaan the elephants endure more horrifying torture when they are trained at knifepoint to paint pictures, play musical instruments or are forced to stand on their head for the benefit of elephant shows.

  • There are many reasons why this is wrong and shouldn't be supported. The main reason is because Asian elephant babies are being torn from their mothers and broken to be docile enough to make the silly paintings. The "breaking" ritual (phaajaan) is a horrible week-long session of torture that's so bad many elephants don't even survive. Not to mention the cruelty of separating babies from mothers and their aunties.

Lek Chailert of the Elephant Sanctuary asks you not to support this abuse. Thanks.

  • gay elephants ????

  • faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake ar-tards lol <@:-)

  • thats ah stupid elephant!

  • Thanks for sharing this Maury! Us flowers like!

  • if the elephant didn't like his environment then he would go ape shiz and trample everyone, like carnival elephants have done in the past. So obviously their fed/trained/treated properly.

  • I'm not sure people realize this, but when a new baby elephant is born, the tribe selects a young (teenage) mahout to train and live with that elephant for the rest of its life. One mahout perelephant. These elephants are lifelong friends and they do EVERYTHING together. There is an incredible amount of respect for the elephants.

Saying this is cruel is the equivalent of saying that teaching your dog to sit is cruel. The relationship between mahout and elephant is extremely close.

  • Yeah the mahout and elephant have a lifelong friendship - in an ideal world. What tends to happen is that the majority of elephants are owned by rich families and mahouts are hired by them to tend to the elephants. The problem is elephants are a commodity more often than not in Thailand and as a result when problems arise elephants are sold on. In one lifetime an elephant may have as many as 20 different owners. They're on the CITES endangered list but are classed as farm animals in Thailand.

  • As the person who took this video, I can tell you that these particular elephants were treated extremely well and were definitely enjoying themselves. People who are critical should really learn about the culture and the mahouts who train these animals before making judgments about things they don't know understand.

  • if i were the elephant ied loovee painting <3

  • Why don't they train orangutans to paint too? I think that would be a lot easier.... I mean, orangutan are closer to us, humans, no? :)

  • You guys are losers, acting like they're being forced and abused and tortured and exploited, wtf. Yhey do it out of fun and they like painting, and yes people are making money but does it matter? Yhey trained the elephants.

  • i wish i was forced to paint all day. Get a life. :P

  • You have no idea what you are talking about.

  • If you compare some of videos, the elephant(s) are going through the exact same motions. Likely story-they've been trained to do this. Unless you believe these elephants do this so often that they're going through the motions each time, the amount of training necessary would be enormous- frightening. Elephant art? I'm not convinced and worry people praising this -> leads to more abuse of these great creatures.

Just search through the videos. I found 3 that start with the exact same strokes.

  • Yes they were trained to make the same simple pictures. It simply insures a way for the zoo to make money. It beats making the animals give tourists rides on their backs doesn't it?

Ever been to the grand canyon and see or take the donkey ride down to the bottom? The mules do the trek 2-3x a day. If you ask me, painting a picture is far more humane.

  • Amazing! Animals can be so smart, and some can be artists too, just like some humans. Both great training and great talent. 5 stars
