The chest beating is just culture, but the foundation of it is a great thawwab. It creates a sense of joining AhlulBayt in their tragedies and a sense of mourning also. Its not haraam it does not harm at all.

I still don't get why shias hit themselves. I don't think Hazrat Ali (RA) or anyone else would want them to... And doesn't the Qur'an forbid oneself from harming their body?
However, i do admire the shia for their love of the ahl-e-bayt. And i think most shias believe that Sunnis don't have love for the ahl-e-bayt. Your very much mistaken. No one can get anywhere without our Ali (RA).

I don't know how you feel but when I hear the maqtal I could not stop but hit myself on the head, trying to get closer to my imam and the pain he felt........
I mean it is normal to see a mother hit herself in the face when a tragedy befalls her, yet when the greatest of tragedies occurs people seem to be reluctant and cautious....
