  • How many plays will a shellac record last ?

  • @byronjamesbaillie

Depends on what kind of equipment you play them with. Originally, it was a steel needle that wore out and needed to be replaced every 3-5 records. If you continue to use a worn out needle, the record deteriorates pretty fast. Also, early reproducers weiged in at several ounces, all that weight bearing down on the groove at the needle. Modern equipment (after 1952 or so) is a lot less damaging to the record, could last for hundreds of plays, maybe thousands.

  • I am so envious. My old 78 shellac wore out decades ago.All one could hear was a crackling hiss and,in the background a few faint notes.Vanished glory if you will.Thank you for this souvenir.

  • lf you fancy wearing wrist supports for about a month, then Meade Lux lewis' style of playing is the one for you. lt's a form of boogie like no other but one that some players tend to shy away from because it's anything but easy. lt's just so damned good though!

  • Love that boogie piano, this is the kind of music that inspires alot of people to start playing piano

  • There is a 45rpm reissue of this version. What's really interesting is if you listen to the 45 on 33 speed. You can really hear all the intricate runs and trills and it's not super slow either. A pretty good tempo. You don't get the same results from playing the 78 at 45 speed.

  • He continued to record it for many years for many different labels. This was about the last "true" original version. He tried to play it faster and faster and change the verses around. It just sounded like noise instead of a chuggy good beat. Probably THE most unusual and impressive of the boogie records. There's not another one that sounds like it. Very difficult to play. He had huge hands and hit several keys with his thumb.

  • @2agray l have to agree with your comments re-Meade lux Lewis' later performances. he began to rush his effects and clearly missed keys. Comparing it with his earlier playing it was a bit sad to watch although this track is as good as it gets. You're right about something else too...lt's a real bitch to play!

  • This was a reissue. The original pressing was on a Scroll Victor. Just about all copies of this record are in very good condition. Was not a popular tune but certainly a boogie classic and one people have tried to master for years unsuccessfully. This was the third version of this tune. The first was an early Paramount pressing. The second was a Parlaphone/Decca pressing. This Victor pressing was probably the best of all of them.

  • Cool, thanks for uploading.

  • Heavens to Murgatroid (as SnagglePuss would say)!!! Music of the boogie woogie persuasion don't get better than this! My all time favorite classic tune! Never fails to lighten my mood & give me "happy feet"!!! THANK YOU for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! You've made my day & my week!!! :)

  • fantastic
