  • I appreciate what you are trying to lay down but get your history of mathematics right. Real numbers have been defined for quite some time. You may be right that zero still has some questions to answer but to imply that zero, or rather none of something was a foreign concept is just wrong. you should use the case of 1 divided by zero as an example as the inexplicable nature of zero not sheep herders in a bar.

  • see "The Language of Mathematics (5): Zero and Infinity". That said, considering you had problems with this video, you may also find faults with the Zero and Infinity video as well.

    I discovered this trick on my new calculator that I had saved up my pocket money to buy when I was 12 years of age in 1974(That calculator only had 7 digits!!,and had and LED screen which was fantastic in a dark room as a kid)

  • Isn't zero just a marker set in an infinite number span so we have a simple reference to make calculations from?

  • That's sort of like saying that the Earth is just the third planet in the solar system. It's true, but there is a lot more to the earth than just being the 3rd rock around the sun (from our perspective anyway).

    Basicly... what I think you mean is that it doesn't matter where we put zero in the infinite (universe) it still has it's "magical" property's that make it special.

    I started watching your video's to refresh my math skills for some datacompression idear's I had/have.

    But "zero" is just such a facinating thing.

  • Sort of, but i don't think the universe is infinite. If it was then the night sky would not be dark. I'm going to talk about this when i deal more with zero and infinity.

    zero in the absolute sense of the word, meaning "nothing", is indeed special, because we really have no idea what nothing is.

    I would see the universe as the flipside of infinity in real numbers... I see no logical reason for it to be infinite.

    I agree it was a bad example, but you started about "3rd planet from the sun". :)

How come you don't believe in infinity?- I'm not that much in theology by the way- I believe that there is no beginning and no end when it comes to the universe, therefore it must be infinite. If there was an end, then what IS the end? Nothing is something too. Even if it's a dark space without any atoms, it would be a 'something', it's just hard to imagine. Tell me what you think, btw r u Persian?

  • I use infinity is two different way; first to mean that something goes on forever, second to mean that something collapses (dividing by zero).

    What we think we know of the universe is that there was no matter to begin with. Everything was energy. The question is, what is beyond matter (the matter that we can see anyway)... as well, what is dark matter?

    I personally believe that there is a boundary to the universe that we see... the night sky is dark.

  • one reason is what you pointed out, it reflects "chronological discovery", however, there are more important reasons to divide the numbers in these subgroups, and that is to define criteria for certain function/identities/relations etc...

    For example take a look at the Language of Mathematics III videos 89 to 91. We use these subsets to define what a polynomial is, i.e. N can only be an element of the Whole numbers for polynomials.

  • I think zero was a discovery, you were correct with your term. It, however, was not an invention.

    Sort of like the discovery of electricity.

  • It's still strange that even the ancient Greeks did not figure out that zero is a number. Zero is an incredible number, besides being the additive identity, one also finds it in Euler's identity. It never changes a single number in the process of addition and it's part of one of the most beautiful math theories of all time; very inspiring indeed.

  • I am a math major (junior), and something that has never been explained to me is the following: If 0 is a whole number and not a natural number, then can 10 really be a natural number with the zero being what makes 10=10 and not 10=1? Im not trying to be philosphical here, it has just never made sense...

  • 0 alone is different than the 0 that appears in the number 10. I am not sure if I am correct, but the 0 that appears in the number 10 is a place-holder and does not have the same properties as the true number 0.

  • Right! 0 is the most important number in existence. It's critical as a placeholder, in that it:

    - Logically balances both the infinite and negative-infinite extremes of our universe (like a fulcrum),

    - Abstractly provides value ('0' sheep),

    - Physically becomes the necessary 10th digit that gives our base-10 number system a critical rank-and-file practicality for subtracting (ex: 5 sheep - 5 sheep = 0 sheep), grouping (ex: ages 20-29, the 80s) and marking time (ex: 5..4..3..2..1..LIFT0FF!)

  • Very creative and engaging - I like your style. Just thought I'd mention that our good mathematics teachers (and some of them are very, very good) actually do emphasize not using calculators. The problem isn't really with the teachers; over-sized classes and almost no money. Teachers who insist on higher standards always find resistance. Administration doesn't understand academia. LOL.
