Ah, THAT'S exactly it. Love the art design of both those films, but never thought about how similar the two look. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the same folks worked on both. Off to IMDB.com to compare the credits.
Would pay quite a bit to see a new film that looks like either in theatres, I think I'm about finished catching up on most North American animation-style films by now (Ralph Bakshi, Don Bluth, almost all Disney, a few other independants, etc).
Cool! well Nelvana did R&R and this was a US/Australian/Canadian/Danish co-production so that would explain a few of the designers and some animators of R&R doing this movie. Does this movie remind you of Miyazaki's Nausicaa or Princess Mononoke? same thing like those 2 with it's forests, fantasy and same message
Yeah, good ol' Nelvana (remembering their neon-ish polar bear mascot/end credits logo--should look up what else they did, all that's coming to me is Care Bears, heh). When I checked the IMDB earlier, got distracted with other stuff, so yet to confirm a Ferngully/R&R link (Unearthed Films did a ridiculously good job on the special edition DVD set of the latter a while back, didn't get the blu though, won't double-dip). Princess Mononoke, definitey. Haven't seen Nausicaa yet.
Do you think Crysta is one hot fairy? i would love to take off those clothes and squeeze/suck those melons and eat that pussy if i was shrunk down to her size or she grew to my size. She's up there with Elinore from wizards.
Yep, she's smokin'. Was watching bits of the film on YouTube here the other night and in the "Dream Worth Keeping"/cave sequence, when she and Zack are all wet ? DAMN !
Seemed like the animators knew exactly what they were doing with a lot of the gestures and body language in this film too...there's more than a little suggestiveness in certain parts (but mostly just the cave sequence), looking at it with adult eyes. It's still very innocent, but it's there. No censoring. :)
Does the movie Avatar remind you of this, Princess Monononoke, Heavy Metal, Fantastic Planet, Lightyears (aka Gandahar), Willow, Star Wars, Last of the Mohicans, Lawrence of Arabia, Dune, Castle in The Sky aka Laputa, Total Recall, Starchaser Legend of Orin and Star Trek 6?
Cameron is a fan of animation especially anime, European animation and adult animation to Sci-fi/fantasy movies/books as he paid homage to those movies i mentioned above.
Not too far into the middle of Avatar 3D on premiere night in Montreal, my exact thoughts were, "This is like a combination of Ferngully and Pocahontas' stories, characters, tribes, and themes--ridiculously similar". Apparently a whole lotta folks had the same thought, as it was all over the internet the next day (though some reviewers and movie-goers only mentioned one film or the other). Haven't seen Willow (I know, I know--I love fantasy films, but there're a ton of `80s...
Would you compare Avatar to the other movies i mentioned like Heavy Metal, Fantastic Planet and Princess Monononoke as well? Cameron borrowed from them as well.
You must've replied before I got around to posting the second part of my response. Yeah, I can see lotsa some similarities between Mononoke and Avatar (and Ferngully). The most basic structure is the same between all three. Young teenaged or 20-something human male ventures or stumbles into the living space of a princess from another culture, race, or species, whose people are under threat from human development/resource mining (Pocahontas fits this bill as well).
What about Atlantis? did you think Avatar was a fun ride and do you think it's rotoscoping like Fire and ice and American Pop and better than Polar Express without the dead-eye effect?
Sure, there're some Atlantis similarities in there as well (I need to see Atlantis again--only once, so far. Love the art, Mike Mignola's influence is evident--plus maybe the sequel that was fashioned outta some of the canceled TV series episodes).
Avatar was a fun ride for sure, yeah. Hoping Cameron deepens the script and dialogue a little more in the sequels, but it was definitely an experience, visual and aural treat with some great actors in there (big Weaver fan).....
...No clue if the CG animation of the Na'vi race in Avatar counts as rotoscoping or not. They call it "motion capture" these days, but I've no clue if that qualifies it as seperate from rotoscoping simply due to the differences in technology used to convert it (with rotoscoping they literally paint over the filmed actors--or use computers to do so as with A Scanner Darkly--and with mo-cap they stick those balls or electrodes or whatever and then render over 'em)...
...Haven't seen The Polar Express yet. Skipped it in theatres (despite seeing most CG and animated flicks in theatres at the time) due to not liking the look of it (and it's an Xmas movie, meh), didn't get around to it on video. Also seemed like there was a Tom Hanks overload for a while there (great actor, but I don't usually wanna see too much of any one performer in the space of a year, save for those on TV shows). My dude has the DVD, slowly watching all his collection.
...ton of `80s fantasy/sci-fi flicks I still haven't gotten to yet), nor Fantastic Planet, Lightyears, Last of the Mohicans, Lawrance of Arabia, or Dune. Can't really see any similarities between Avatar and Heavy Metal, except for maybe the Dar segment. Saw Starchaser a while ago too, dunno how much Avatar has in common with that either (Starchaser has more in common with Star Wars). Trek 6:Undiscovered Country features a bit into Avatar ? How so ?
Well James Cameron is a fan of HM and the magazine as HM is one of his favorite animated movies, he did borrowed from Den and Taarna. Taarna similarities include a sexy half naked female warrior who is a good female role model that takes no shit from anyone, rides a dragon and even the battle between Neytiri and Quatrich was a homage to that same battle sequence in HM. if you watch Castle in The Sky and Nausicaa, you'll see Cameron also borrowed from those including the visuals
@LunaCelestia I like to watch certain movies based on the climate outside as well lol; like if its raining softly or overcast I tend to want to watch Disney's Tarzan...In fall/winter, especially if there are leaves blowing outside thats good Harry Potter weather...&& of course anytime is a great time to watch any kind of jungle-y adventure movies like, of course, Fern Gully, George of the Jungle, Jungle 2 Jungle, & Atlantis (which I think was underrated - great movie to watch, esp. @ night ^-^ )
"look umm what do you do all day?" - " uhh help things grow" - "ya? that sounds cool" - " no, usually it's warm" - "nah no, cool means hot" - "...what?" lmao xD
one of my first favorite songs. :')
