hi im having this trouble now, mine is an 80gb ps3,
it starts up, "sony computer entertainment" shows up and then crashes.. i waited 4 hours but nothing :|, welcome screen never shows up (where you choose your profile) and you cannot make it to XMB, what am i supposed to du ??

Sometimes not booting your PS3 for a long time, like closet hidden, would give it a break and it may decide to function properly once more. my ps3's BD went out so i stored it away, month later, i brought it out and the disk drive functioned flawlessly again.
Firmware failure most liking if it was hardware it wouldn't start in the first place. so i would recommend you ship it to sony. Ps3 doesn't come with a safe mode option so you can't do much.
Yes you will need a new PS3 from what Sony told me. They said b/c I could not get into the XMB screen that I could not even reformat it. Luckily, mine was still under warranty so I sent it in for free. If your PS3 is still under warranty, send it in. Otherwise, you need to call them and I think the charge is $150 for them to fix it.
Actually you can reformat it...or there may be a way: Remove the harddrive, stick it in an external casing and wipe it clean. Then plug it back into the PS3, a prompt should pop up asking you to reformat it without going into the XMB. I'm sorry if this help came too late....
It was still under warranty so Sony took it back and sent me a refurbished PS3. The person I spoke with on the phone said that if it does not make it to the XMB then you cannot do anything including reformatting. I did not try to change the HDD.

Same thing happens to me... I t freezes a lot in the welcome screen but it never freezes when Im playing a game

Sony never was ablet to tell me the cause. They only said b/c it was under warranty to have it serviced.

replacing HDD fixes the problem.
i had the same problem a while ago.
pros: upgrade to a better HDD (80Gb,100Gb,120Gb, ... 320Gb)
cons: lost all data :(
