Actually, Sammy's original intent was for this song to be about "racism in the deep South" and how the white man is holding the black man down. That didn't sit too well with me, because I'm from the South and things are much better than they used to be. It's not perfect, but race relations have improved -- and in many areas, it's better than it is in other parts of the U.S. It's easy for a stupid musician to sit in Cabo drinking Tequila and point the finger. The album bombed liked his career.

I met both Roy Rogers and the late harmonica master Norton Buffalo five or six years ago during a break in an outdoor show in Caldwell, ID at St Chapelle winery and my second live show ever was the Boise, ID stop of Van Halen's 1984 tour! I guess the monkey bit was a take on the 0U812's Darwin photo theme. Again, this was Sammy at his most bitter with EVH, I doubt he'd do something like that again. I still remember the night I was drivin' home and I heard what sounded like Van Halen music, but the voice wasn't DLR...kinda sounded familiar, like someone else's voice that was great R'n'R...kinda like Sammy. But that couldn't be...? A dream ticket? Yup. And it went right up into the top charts and stayed. Doesn't take anything away from Diamond Dave, but Sammy's got an edge and a groove that really added a new dimension to VH, who were always a band w/attitude. Great stuff.
