To any men watching this....if you find yourself a true rebel girl believe me it's amazing. Life begins at 46 for some (she even knows how to deal with bullet wounds in the line of duty) What more could a man ask?
Death will never silence the voice of Hazel Dickens. Thanks for speaking out for working people everywhere. Have a peaceful rest, Hazel - it is well deserved.
Thank you so much for this video!! Hazel died last night and this is such a fun tribute to her and to all the other women who've worked so tirelessly for labor rights.
A while back I posted this on my FB dedicated to 3 women I love who have fought for years, I'd be happy to die alongside any of them, when you live in a mining town you see the strength of women. This is the true workers love song..."and I'm proud to fight for freedom with a rebel girl"
GREAT , BEAUTIFUL , SONG !!! & GREAT BEAUTIFUL WOMEN !!! , IN THIS VIDEO , MANY HER ARE MY HEROS !!! I , was blu , this evening & now I am not , after watching - This Video Gives HOPE !!! STRENGTH !!! , THANK YOU , ei kreis

Too bad we are still called girls in this song. Now the word stands for women who work in the sex industry. If you are someone female and disposable, you are a always girl.
But as my father was fond of saying, "Get a stupid woman to do it for you." I expect he was forshadowing the medical and legal industries.
Goethefemme: check it out, this song was written back in 1915, long before political correctness reared it's ugly head. EGF never took offense and was proud of the song. I don't know where your from but I never I've never heard of women in the sex industry referred to as girls. Get over yourself, and enjoy the music.
This song was written by Joe Hill about Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, who was a young girl when she started to organize factory workers. I have no idea how "girl" is sexist when it's a reference to youthfulness, and if you actually listened to the words you'd see the song is anything but sexist.
Don't forget about the Kurdish woman called " Leyla Zana" she was elected into the parliment, said couple of words against the military junta and immediately sentenced 10 years in prison .Yet she's still talking and fighting like hell.
it's kinda sad that countrymusic and "rednecks" has become a bad word describing conservetive opinions and people. but it hasn't always been so. they where the workers and still are, the "whitetrash" and so on.....i say we as i find myself among those who sometimes look down on the rednecks....we should think twice...
I for one am so weary of the thoughtless comments about "hillbillies" and "trailer trash", those jokes about bad teeth, when there are no dentists who will take our so-called "insurance"...
even among those who should know better & would never dream of saying anything bigoted against others, it is all too common to hear these remarks.
Great job on the video, looks like you put your heart and soul into this! Just like Elizabeth did when she gave her speech to the world.
"WOMEN NEEDS TO STICK TOGETHER AS ONE LIKE IWW DID FOR ALL WORKERS!
I am working on couple of projects one is about 'EGFlynn and IWW' (not the title)... I am holding "The Songs of Joe Hill" book in my hands... a friend knew what I was working on and wow!
On your text for Charolotte Anita Whitney, what does syncialism mean? I cannot find it in the dictionary, on wikipedia, and a Google search yielded 3 hits, 2 of which were for this video. Please explain.
I must say, I do not really understand anarchism. To paraphrase Engels, to destroy the state immediately after the revolution would prevent the proletariat from having a means to establish a workers' society and would allow counter-revolution to take place.
@Scifinutthrawn - To begin with, Engels is wrong: the state is the counter revolution. Lenin and the Bolsheviks' creation of a "workers state" was just perverted capitalism.
Syndicalism is a revolutionary movement that began in Europe as a reaction to the rise of industrial capitalism. The word comes from the french "syndicate" which just means "union." It argues that it is the union, not the political party, which will be the organization to see through a communist (anarchist) revolution.
Years before women could even vote in American politics, they not only had a say in the the American Labor movement, they were labor leaders and organizers in the IWW. Such a union that not only included unskilled workers, but women and non whites in their union was doomed to be destroyed by our corperate run government. Broken as we may have been, we marched on and are growing stronger today. Solidarity Fellow workers!
Hey I liked this! But I think the office workers in the SSP did more fighting for the wobs than the MSPs did (Kane and Leckie). No need to duplicate their power structures... The union came from the bottom up after all.
Yeah, I know what you are saying is quite true, and I agree with you on it. The thing is, because the IWW was started in the US, most well known members were Americans. I wanted to show that the IWW was truly international. Sadly, the most well known members in Scotland (Kane and Leckie) are well known for being MSPs.
Hazel has traveled a long & rocky trail to get here. The 1st time that I heard her was on a flatcar stage at a coalminers strike in W. Va. about 30+ years ago. I have been tuned into her music forever..She has a powerful voice and a relevant message. Great video also......
Thanks! There are so many women involved in the labor movement across the world... I tried to stick with just wobblies. Yet there are many others I didn't use, but are just as important and insperational.
yeah, i don't have anything against Mother Jones mag either - i have read some good articles in it, like i said b4.
But like you say, it could give ppl who know the name the impression it represents i.w.w./socialist views, when it hardly ever goes that far enough, sadly, tho compared to the msm, not a bad read
Thanks for making this mate. Reminds me again of the chat we had about Joe Hill's quote about songs - which is so true and relevant.
agree with you about the mpother jones thing, tho they do hae a couple of decent articles on, are definetely more wishy-washy liberal than 'abolition of the wages system' ;)
Thanks Michelle. Yeah, I didn't mean anything against the Mother Jones magazine in general. But the name would make you think it was put out by the wobblies or the socialist party.
I'll try to do another vlog this week. Anyway thanks again!
What the hell is this lyrics change? The chorus is: "That's the Rebel Girl, That's the Rebel Girl.
To the working class she's a
Precious pearl.
She brings Courage, Pride and Joy
To the fighting Rebel Boy
We've had girls before, but we
Need some more in the Industrial
Workers of the World. For it's
Great to fight for freedom
With a Rebel Girl"
