@alliswow Gretzky played on THE most stacked team of all time. Lemieux played for an under achieving Penguins team until he lifted them onto his shoulders towards two cups. Jagr came after and took the load.
Gretz and Mario are different types of players; the difference being that Mario used his physique to his advantage and could do things where Wayne would get knocked off the puck.
About Lemieux: "In my mind the most talented player I've ever seen. If it were not for health problems, God only knows what his numbers would have been." - Bobby Orr (I guess it says it all).
Really, what was the Soviet defense supposed to do there? Gretzky and Lemieux on the ice at the same time is probably the biggest mismatch of all time.
Second best of all time, cuz any argument for Mario being the best always starts with "If". IF Mario played 80 games, he'd hit 200 points in a season. IF Mario had better health, he'd break 99's records of 92 goals, 163 assists, 215 points. IF this, IF that. And these IF's are probably right. But in the end, they are still IF's. Gretzky DID score 92 goals, DID get 163 assists, DID score 200 points in a season (four times), DOES have his name on almost every offensive record.
I agree with what you say. We can only guess what kind of numbers Mario would have managed to produce if he'd stayed fit. But numbers aside, I would say that they were perhaps equal, but perhaps in different ways.
@ryno7437 That was game 3 of the 1987 Canada cup final, the series against the Soviet Union was tied 1-1. The 3rd game was tied 5-5 and then Mario scored the game and series winning goal
I never saw legends like Bobby Orr or Gordie Howe, Gretsky was the emperor of assists and a world class scorer, Brett Hull could score even without the puck, but for me Mario Lemieux will always be number one. He was complete and probably one of the most valuable players of a team in NHL´s history
Best player bar none...my opinion of course. I think he rarely missed a breakaway...deked the goalie or shot under the crossbar...either way, it was going in. But what made him great was his vision and hands.....that man could deke, anticipated your move before you did and countered with his deke.
How come the Penguins get all the good players. I mean look, first they had Mario Lemieux, then Jaromir Jagr, Now Sidney Crosby! Pittsburgh always lucks out with sports athletes.
If you ask me, Bobby Orr is undoubtedly the greatest to ever play the game. Mario Lemieux is second. Wayne Gretzky is third. You can debate and fight, but at the end of the day, they are all in a league of their own.
Mario Lemieux is the greatest of all time hands down and he is my idol!!!! As mike lange would say, lord stanley, lord stanley, bring me the brandy!!!!
I love Lemeuix, but let me put this into perspective. When they change rules to a game because one man is so dominant, that explains all. Gretzky hands down was greatest player ever. Because of that and his stats. Also reinvented the game in more ways than one. Bobby Orr also is in this category.
Being injured is not the explanation. If you are all the time injured you have no use on your team. Resisting injuries is very important any kind of sport. Some are more talented with this also. Maybe Mario's playstile was very fragile. Maybe he should do the same as Gretsky did. Bob Probert is the answer.

@ChachaChapati heard an interesting quote the other day. ""He could have not scored one goal in his entire career and he would still have the highest point total in NHL history"....#99
"would've easily topped Gretzky were it not for his ailing health." Awesome player, but get off the booze brother.
@ChachaChapati Coulda'-shoulda'-woulda' history never counts! Some say Bossy would have been the best if he was not in such a physical Prince of Wales Division in the 70s and early 80s.... Longevity and staying healthy is part of the game like goals and assists and greatness.
@woodss3 suggesting #66 would pass G if he played more games is as relevant as saying Gretz would have accumalated 4000 points if he played as long as Howe. Both statements are meaningless....
Howe only played 300ish more games than Gretzky. Also, it's not quite the same logic. The fact is that Lemieux lost a huge part of his prime because of his back, hip and Hodgkins. I agree that hockey is partially about longevity, but one can't blame him for injuries far beyond his or his trainers' control. But, in the end, Gretzky has the numbers and was healthy. Sure, health wrecked Lemieux's potential, but it wrecked Orr's potential as well.
@MCarrai488 not entirely sure what your point is. However, I heard a quote that put #99s greatness into perspective. "He didn't need to score ONE goal in his entire career, yet he would still have been the all-time points getter". Many feel the greatest of Gretzky's records is 92 goals and 50 goals in 39 games.None, including a healthy Mario, could beat these records. Some experts say that it might take another 100 years of hockey to find someone who might challenge these records.
@woodss3 Point is Gretzky IMO is the greatest, but there are factors people tend to ignore (hence butterfly/Clutch and Grab comments).
1) Lemieux had 85 in 75 games; 92 in 80 isn't far off. It'll probably the second coming for anyone to beat 50 G in 39.
2) Also, Lemieux played pretty much with himself and hockey's greatest underachiever in Jagr. Compared to the '80s Oilers, the 91/92 Pens were a meh team. Gretzky is probably the best player ever, but he also played on one of the best teams ever.
@woodss3 Also, Lemieux, before his first retirement, averaged over 2 PPG, which lowered in his return not that he seemed to care. Gretzky couldn't match that record. How about the .750+ goals per game? (marred by his return). I think 99 should be viewed as the greatest of all time, but the "couldas" make the discussion fun! Personally, I think Lemieux is the greatest goal scorer of all time. Gretzky's ability to read the game made him a god on the ice.
@MCarrai488 cannot disagree with Marvelous Mario's amazing acheivments, and coulda-shoulda-woulda is fun but some (not you) take it out of proportion and beyond reality. In my memory #99 is #1, and 66 is #2.Guys like OV and Sid are in a tier below....something on par with Bure/Selane and Sakic/Yzerman
@MCarrai488 PPG is not a good arguement to use against gretzky...He was almost 40 years old when he retired and he played 600 more games than lemieux...the older you get, the more hockey u play your ppg will go down...Compare gretzky ppg after 900 games played in the nhl like lemieux and Gretzky ppg is much higer than lemieux's
damn...i can imagine what it would be like if 99 and 66 started their careers in todays era of hockey....they would be puttin up some ridiculous numbers thats for sure.
Wish he woulda had a longer career... Even though I hated the penguins back when he played I'd still watch them play just because of how creative this guy was. He always made everyone on the ice with him 10x better.
Gretz and Mario both had their strengths.....and numbers don't tell the whole story either. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I think they both where great.
What are you talking about, his first game getting 5 goals? He got his 1st on his 1st shift, we all know that, but after that he was blanked until game no.9 where he scored his 2nd, and he was blanked again until game no.14 for his 3rd. No wonder why he couldn't get 50 goals until his 3rd season.
Im Slovakian and I hate to say it but he was the best NHL player ever ...So talented so perfect so great ...lucky for other nation teams there is no one like him in Canada,s jersey right now but huge shame for the hockey :((
@DickMcPenis... I was thinking the same thing... the one where he had Mats Sundin on his back is never in the top... and there is also one he made during an allstar game that we never see... can't remember it myself when it was.
Still, this is a great moment of hockey watching Mario Lemieux.
Lemieux's gifts and charachter are so manifest and pure that he constantly transcends the general nature of that objective. While it easy despite there gifts to have a dislike casual or not to harbour a dislike for the likes of alex rodriguez or barry bonds or the aforementioned jordan even at times someone as beloved as Ali or Gretzky. This never gets in the way of the pure joy, intelligence and skill of Mario's constant ingeniuety. Vive Le Magnifique ! :)
absolutely beautiful. Perhaps there is more grace and dare i say genius here then in any other athlete. Unlike jordan and many other great athletes whose skills are almost secondary to the tyranical bully like nature of the competitive drive. What we have with Mario is the sheer boundless overflowing of talent and conception. Sublime, subtle ... magical.
While out of the will towards the objective of winning and at times dominance grace can be produced by the sheer singularity of the drive.
I've seen them all and am the biggest Pens fan in the world. I'm sorry but Crosby is not even CLOSE to the player Mario was! Not even close. And Ovechkin isn't either. The ONLY 3 in this category are 66, 99, and 4. It's a shame that hockey sucks so bad today. People don't know that Lemieux's 199 Point season he also got 100 PIM's!!! The refs hated him because he was from Quebec and Cherry hates people not born in Kingston lol. Le Mieux means THE BEST in French!
@theone456 ...I disagree, based on the fact that nobody can say that one was better than the other two. Why do I say that? There are endless arguments why either Lemieux, Gretzky or Orr is the best. That's reality.
We're all allowed to have our favorite players, but to say "he's better 'cause I said so" is childish. It's your ego talking, that's all it is. If you disagree, I won't tell you to fuck off, you're allowed to disagree with me.
You're also allowed to keep your blinders on, too... ;)

Wish he woulda had a longer career... Even though I hated the penguins back when he played I'd still watch them play just because of how creative this guy was. He always made everyone on the ice with him 10x better.

Not gonna lie... this vid is a little boring compared to Jagr's top 10 o.O
vrambo 1 year ago
At 2:51 where he fakes the shot and then goes backhand, Ive never seen a goalie faked out of his own jockstrap quite like that.

Gretz and Mario both had their strengths.....and numbers don't tell the whole story either. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I think they both where great.

In Jaromir Jagr's opinion, Lemieux is the best hockey player ever. Who disagrees?? :-)

Number 6: Doesn't even touch the puck and it is still brilliant. I remember that like it was yesterday!

OH MAN CHECK IT OUT. 0:17 : Brutal faul from Jaromir Jagr (mighty 68) on the defenseman infront of goal.

Say what you will of Wayne Gretsky great Hockey player yes..
but Mario Lemieux after all he's done for the game and his Rookie yr and his first game getting 5 goals, can you say Gretsky is better? really?
there is no one absalutly no one from this century or any other other then 4 bobby orr
that made this game enjoyable to watch.
Lemieux is a Hockey God
LovinRupert 1 year ago
@LovinRupert
Irato99 1 year ago
@LovinRupert 5 goals in his first nhl game?? it took him more then 20 games to get his first 5 goals..

gretsky is better

You can't even spell his name. Your credibility fails.

The things he was able to do just make you shake your head. He made a Hall of Fame defensemen look down right silly.

@DickMcPenis... I was thinking the same thing... the one where he had Mats Sundin on his back is never in the top... and there is also one he made during an allstar game that we never see... can't remember it myself when it was.
Still, this is a great moment of hockey watching Mario Lemieux.
dric7978 1 year ago
Lemieux's gifts and charachter are so manifest and pure that he constantly transcends the general nature of that objective. While it easy despite there gifts to have a dislike casual or not to harbour a dislike for the likes of alex rodriguez or barry bonds or the aforementioned jordan even at times someone as beloved as Ali or Gretzky. This never gets in the way of the pure joy, intelligence and skill of Mario's constant ingeniuety. Vive Le Magnifique ! :)
KingMinosxxvi 1 year ago
absolutely beautiful. Perhaps there is more grace and dare i say genius here then in any other athlete. Unlike jordan and many other great athletes whose skills are almost secondary to the tyranical bully like nature of the competitive drive. What we have with Mario is the sheer boundless overflowing of talent and conception. Sublime, subtle ... magical.
While out of the will towards the objective of winning and at times dominance grace can be produced by the sheer singularity of the drive.

lol wtf was the goalie doing on goal#4? xD
Kerec 1 year ago
I've seen them all and am the biggest Pens fan in the world. I'm sorry but Crosby is not even CLOSE to the player Mario was! Not even close. And Ovechkin isn't either. The ONLY 3 in this category are 66, 99, and 4. It's a shame that hockey sucks so bad today. People don't know that Lemieux's 199 Point season he also got 100 PIM's!!! The refs hated him because he was from Quebec and Cherry hates people not born in Kingston lol. Le Mieux means THE BEST in French!
Let's Go Pens!!!

Greatest Hockey Player EVER!!!
better then Gretzky or Orr.
and if you disagree.......fuck off.
theone456 1 year ago
@theone456 ...I disagree, based on the fact that nobody can say that one was better than the other two. Why do I say that? There are endless arguments why either Lemieux, Gretzky or Orr is the best. That's reality.
We're all allowed to have our favorite players, but to say "he's better 'cause I said so" is childish. It's your ego talking, that's all it is. If you disagree, I won't tell you to fuck off, you're allowed to disagree with me.
You're also allowed to keep your blinders on, too... ;)
